This little sucker just arrived in the shed. As soon as the weather clears I'm going to take it for a test ride, it's got a wet weight of 138kg with a whole 15hp and retails for around $9k. How cute...but not sure for what exactly....I guess I'll find out.

What do you think of it?

They look awesome. But at $8995 they're going to have to be well finished and have awesome handling and braking to justify the cost against a Ninja 250R or Hyosung GT250R. Apparently the top speed is around the 135-140kmh mark so it's not doing too bad for a 125.

It does seem a bit steep considering that the FXR150 was only $5k when they came out and they have similar specs.

Either way, I'm keen for a ride - but at 75% of the bikes all up weight I'll be interested to see how it handles with me on it!

Do you know if the engine is a 'new' design, or is it a re-tuned MX motor?

this is a stupid comparison as they throw the rs125 in but has some cool shots of the two 125 four strokes in use.

Not as stupid as you think - the rules in the UK is that you can only have a 125cc bike or some approved 250's on your learner/restricted.

No the rules in the uk state you can have a bike with 24 hp at stage one upgraded to 34 hp in stage two and so on (or summat like that, I dont know the exact hp figures). Thats why they have the 125cc range at all becuase of the hp restriction. They do it on a cc and hp combined rating.

Somewhere on the net it has a guy in europe riding a r6 restricted to 34hp to meet licence requirements...now thats just silly.

My 1999 Drive Code has a Suzuki ad showing a $3495 price tag!

It looks cool (definitely) but for experienced riders, 15hp would be... yea.
But it'll make a good learners bike (ignoring the price tag).

A few people have them here in the UK. They look great - really fresh and modern . Definitley a good learner bike for a 17 year old.

However i'd rather have my Aprilia RS125 anyday for the performance. Doesn't compare!

I saw them in the flesh today!

Okay, they are hands down the most freakin awesome looking learner bikes. The quality seemed top not and man they were bout the same height and dimensions as an r6! In fact I looked at the front fo a blue yzfr125 and thought "nice r6" only to realise the r6 was parked next to it and it was a 125! Doh, man I wanna really have a go on one....I dont care if its got 15hp...gimme gimme gimme.

I don’t think it'll fear too well at its current price point, they'll have to start dropping it to reel in more people willing to pay that for a 125.

They might sell reasonably well in Britain / Europe where license restrictions mean they are in high demand and there are quite a few 125's to choose from at various price points, but here in NZ the majority of new riders will be looking to get the most bang for their buck in the sub-250cc range. And if they're looking at a brand new little Sports bike its going to be the CBR125 ($4,995) / Hyosung GT250R ($6,995) / Ninja 250 ($7,995)

The YZF-125R at $8995 just seems strange. If it had a 250 twin in it like the Ninja / Hyo and had the same price tag it could have taken off just like they did. But sitting $4,000 higher than the CBR125 (No matter if it has exceptional build quality and all the gadgets) and only just nestling below Aprilia's RS125 ($9,995) - which would no doubt eat it in terms of performance, not to mention a few more poser points with its Italian pedigree - the Yamaha is not sitting a pretty position.

I'll be watching with interest, but expecting to see $8,995 go to $8,495/$8295 - possibly less if they have real trouble moving them.

Then again, these proposed levies could mix up the market completely.

-Mike.

Yes you can use this for bucket racing. You may be able to get one 'un-new' soon, we call this second-hand, but as it is a brand-new model which has just been release I wouldn't expect to see any up for sale privately for a few months yet.
