Well, I decided to stop in at red baron today, just to have a look at some bikes as I will be changing soon....and I had a sit on a 900ss, nice bike. Light, felt nimble, was abit worn...then the salesman said did I want to sit on the vtr1000sp-1. I really should have said no (as I fully well know that the sp-1 is my fav sprot bike and probably my dream bike to own). I sat on it and fell in love with it and now want it. Its an 01 with sixty four thousand k though. And I realise bikes can go for hundreds of ks but a high performance machine like that...I dunno. Anyway, it was perfect fit. My feet were planted, the reach was all good, it wasnt cramped...and it got the blood pumping (and it wasnt even on!) and it looks drop dead gorgeous.

So, whats the opinon on sprot bikes of that age and mileage. I know a well kept high mileage bike is better than a thrashed low mileage bike. It was in great nick bar the odd boot scuff on the rear and stone chip here and there. More an opinion wanted on how high performance hondas have held up. Whaddya guys reckon...overpriced? Can get some nice bikes for 10k...

Maybe I should be sensible and get a gsx1200 or a klr650 or summat.

Sigh...

Sweet lord I love the look of this bike

Test reports said they were uncomfortable with seats like planks and didn't achieve the goal Honda set for them. Much the same with the Suzuki TL1000R except the R was fairly comfortable.

Bikes that ultimately failed in the market because they didn't live up to the hype by the manufacturers.

Both are good bikes in their own right and owners liked them. Who ever said buying a bike was a "sensible" decision based on logic?

If you like it and want it and can afford it and you're going to have fun on it, what else do you need to know? :sunny:

Yer.. got one new in 2000.... Paid almost 30g's for it.
Best way I can describe it is user unfriendly. Didn't like it at all.
It is a high reving Vtwin with a unique whistling sound because of all the shaft driven cams.... Nothing like a Ducati's rattle.
They will become a collectors item one day, just like the CBX.
I've PM'd you a link to the RC51 site in USA.Most of the technical stuff is available without joining.... There's heaps of aftermarket stuff for them.
Dont buy it you wont like it...:)

But... then you may love it...

Be careful of Red Baron's pricing, in my experience they are the most over priced bike shop I've come across.

When I bought my R1 last year they had the same model in the same colour, so I went to check it out:

03, 30,000kms, no aftermarket goodies, UK bike with mph speedo, scuffed and scratched badly, asking price $13500

my bike listed on Trademe at the same time private sale in Tauranga,
04, 8600kms, aftermarket iridium screen, carbon fibre can, NZ new, immaculate (you could lick the side stand and swing arm), bought for $11,500.

Now this isn't a bash red baron post, but money talks bullshit walks.

oh and as for the seat, send Cajun a PM and factor into the purchase price of any SP1 what he quotes you for a "Rider Custom Seat" - no point being uncomfortable.

Yeah be careful about that, I upgraded from an 01 VFR-800 (V4 with cam gears) to an 04 VFR-800 (v4 with cam chain and VTEC) to get away from that bloody whine, at first I loved it - thought it sound like a jet engine - but after about 2 yrs I bloody hated it. Still had to wait another year to upgrade though.

But of course each to there own.

Ital916: Not quite my cup of tea but I love it when people love stuff so I say take it for a spin, still love it? then buy it mate. It's not a contract made for life, If you don't like it in the long term just sell it on but it would be rude not to purchase something you're in love with eh.

Good luck

If you spend too much time tyre kicking its going to be gone.

He's right. I owned one and still miss it despite my newer bikes.

It's uncomfortable, not good for 2-up, stiff suspension, and can make you slower in bumpy tight roads.
But the best bit comes in trackdays, open sweeping corner on smooth road, vibrating feeling, and the looks.

Buy it if you like it. But don't consider practicality.
Throw your common sense out of the window and you'll be the happiest person on earth.

And as for being a Honda, the bike lasts a long time as long as you have oil, petrol and coolant in it. No cam chain, so that's a big bonus!

Someone needs clarification on this...

In short, its a waste to be riding this to and fro from work/uni, sucking big $$ on unenjoyable riding. Unless you've suddenly freed up more time to go on decent journeys you wont be getting alot of joy.

Juzzer (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=3611) - who was a very active member on here (before he buggered off overseas), had one of the tidiest examples around and gee, did it sound drop dead sexy. If it wasn't for my 'truck driver' back I would of owned one by now. Still one of my all-time favorite bikes.

If the bike was purchased for the intended purpose of commuting / city riding, then yes it wouldn't be very suitable. If my memory serves me well, they are very high geared (similar to the stock NC30) and like to 'hunt' in the lower revs. In a nutshell, they suck for commuting and I'm not only taking about fuel...

But hey if you're into open road riding or track days, then this bike will be your new best friend.

Mind you there are lots of bikes out there and I am still looking and getting opinions...DMNTD gave me the run down on rsv milles today as well as falcos and there are some nice zx9s out there....too much choice :weep:

well the gsx1200 inazuma has tickled my fancy too...they are going for a good price, 5k-7k, and are supposedly "bulletproof" which would be nice as the next time I change bikes is when the new one has turned to dust.

Great bike the ZX9 - loved mine but unfortunately when it came time to upgrade, only real option was a nice 01 with 30k on the clock for $8300, or my 04 R1 for $11,500.

If the ZX9 was $7500 I would have gone for it.

In the end newer, lower kms and modern shape was worth the extra $

Age is nothing man, my 20 year old GSXR on 89k is still a beaut, runs awesome (although should its oils done every 4k, filter every second oil at 8k)

Not too sure on a VTwin lifespan, guess I will find out as my 03 ST4 ages

Ital916; no disrespect man but you're all over the place. We've gone from Hyosung's to Ducati's to this SP1, then over GSX1200's then the Mille's then...

My advice would be to step back, decide what style you want, then what engine config you prefer, then start looking at brands,

then...

Go buy the Mille ;)

You may just be taking piss, and keeping conversations alive which is just as cool, and in which case this post in meaningless.
But if not, i think you need to structure a bit more, coz there's a gazillion options.
But only one choice, the Mille.

Haha, Im a kid in a candy store but I know where my heart lies. Though I am having fun flinging between bikes. If you look back far enough you'll see i've had a love affair with the sp1 and the blackbird.

Shit....both of them are hondas.....wheres that closet, I better get back in. The mille is gorgeous but it wouldnt get any use from me, it needs someone to ride the tits of it...why the sp1 then...well when it comes to sp1s then all rationale goes out the window. Hence the blackbird...it can be wild or sedate and does 2 up and and touring and scratching and looks the bizz and makes me jizz my pants. Just need on for the right price to pop up.

Ill tell you what though, the funny thing is, I'm not comfortable test riding bikes. Be it a 50cc scooter or a bigger bike. I just dont like the feeling of riding something that aint mine. If that makes sense.

Post up a pic of your mille if you want n we can all have a drool over it!

Another funny thing is, I like quiet bikes that have a nice sound when opened up...if that makes sense.

Personally I like the VTR too but it doesn't have a lot of loyal followers. Talk to Nighthawk - he changed his one for a Ducati ST4S. If I may gently suggest, what VTR owners actually want is a Ducati.

You can buy a 2001 Ducati ST4 with 20K for the same money as the VTR. Seriously - that isn't even a choice. The Duc is sex on a stick.......sob....and my ones broken....snivvel....
