Haka and Dansey's are both good. Be prepared to above the snow line on both of these, both it shouldn't be difficult.

I'm not sure about Nevis as there has been some heavy snow in that area and the Cairnmuir which is close by is very slippery.

Nevis has lots of creek crossings at the southern end but if no snow should be good. The northern most creek crossing can be a bit rocky/lumpy. Danseys Pass is a good gravel road and should be fine if no snow. Haka is suppose to be closed on the weekend of the 17th of October for a car rally. It too is a good gravel road apart from the deep gravel on the northern side of the Haka pass. There is a couple of creek crossings but they are generally not too deep.

The snow will not last more than 2/3 days on the passes, so dont go straight away if snowing but you won't have to last long.

Cheers R

P.S. Jantar is closer to the tracks so will know more about the current conditions.

My experience with the Nevis is that (generally) until december the river crossings can be deep. Some of the "land' around the crossings will be very bogy. take the crossings carefully. Still heaps of snow in the mountains waiting to melt and drown your bike. Haka and Danseys will be sweet, but on all of these rides check the weather forecast!

We are going to have a look on labour weekend so will see if you are right. Might be a bit of fun :msn-wink:

The Nevis is Awesome! I have been caught out before though on the flatter open sections. Giving it a fistfull, then Fuck, all of a sudden shit there is a ford right there in front of me that was invisible 50 metres back. Fish tailing under brakes! Awesome !

Cooney, let us know how your ride goes.

Sounds like Palmer Road, Springs Junction.

Round the corner over the slight brow and (oh fcuk!) drop down through the ford in the middle of the corner...

Palmers road is a highway compared to Nevis but the surprises are the same :2thumbsup

Heavy snow for Canty and Marl from tonight lads ... time to get out and play!!

We are Mountain biking at Tekapo this weekend so I think we will geta cold arse :cold:

Still quite a bit of snow around the tops here however with warming it shouldn't be an issue soon, maybe just the snow melt from Nor west would be somthing to watch for.

Thanks for the info fred. We did all except the Nevis this weekend and they are great roads

If anyone finds a number plate (76??G) in the upper Haka I'd be keen to have it back to hang on my wall. Will go get a new plate in next couple of days.
