Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but i hope so ;) planning on doing a ride from Palmy to Hamilton on labour weekend and just out of curiosity plugged it into google maps and it came up with going through the stretch of road between Whakamaru and Te Awamutu. Normaly I would go through tokoroa and not even give it a second thought however the twisties on the map stirred my curiousity...looks like fun but I have never been that way before. So basically what i'm asking is the road any good? and worth a go or am i better off going through Tokoroa and up that way?

Anything you can tell me would be much appreciated

P.S. If anyone can tell me how to keep a route saved to google maps i'll put in a link to where i'm meaning but previous attempt failed miserably

IIRC the roads you are talking about from the Kihikihi end are Arapuni Road, Owairaka Valley Road and Waipapa Road. It is a nice piece of sealed road.

Google maps covers most of it but note near Waipapa the road gets quite narrow. Tankers, logging trucks and farm vehicles use the road.

The surface has been patched in places and is a bit rough and there is the odd bit of loose metal past Wharepapa South.

Generally it is in good condition.

Hope that helps.

Excellent road.
I never use main highways if there is any alternative.

This is a good way to find and save routes.

You can also see the ones that others have done:

Sweet as thanks guys.

Sounds like a go then. Also do you think 1600kms over 4 days too far? I'm begining to wonder. Its only 400 a day though, but it will be the first time I have attempted anything anywhere near as big as this.

you will b fine make sure you have plenty of tread and fill up your petrol tank before if runs out
check oil /brakes/ reg/wof, and make sure you have a decent tool kit /cellphone
go out and enjoy yaself

and check tyre air :-) Those sorts of rides are usually pretty good fun.
