View Full Version : Road works on Rimutaka

Yesterday I went to Greytown and noticed big LED panels announcing road works on the Rimutakas near the top. The funny thing is that they are announcing it's gonna take two years :( The road gets quite narrow close to the top.
Don't think I've ever seen a road works traffic warning sign announcing the duration of the project.
I'm assuming most people already know but I was surprised not to see any related posts so I decided to post one myself.

Yeah there are several threads where we've all had a bitch and a moan about it. So there are signs eh? Wonder if they'll actually do a countdown like they did for the millenium?

The sign is there to further depress an already bummed-out group of people who have been having far too much fun on that hill.

Given the way things go with roading projects, I'd say double that then add 50%.
So 9 years really.

Then leave the yellows there AND drop the speed limit by 20%.

ok all, we have started to cut in to the hill, so jobs under way, things to watch out for..
me for starters,,as im driving the big yellow dump truck..and i get to drive up and down the road scaring old ladies in there little cars...:woohoo:
but also a fair bit of truck and trailer movement, and the road surface where we are working will get dirty..
today,i was so sure a chap riding a bike was going to crash in to the the yellow impact containers at the end of the concert blocks:eek5:..as he was looking at us and not the road......:scooter:
well take care. lots of bikes up there to day..

the big bosses showed us a computer model of the new road... like a 3d version of it...
mate, its going to be fast section of road..
just wicked the amount of rock to move..
oh well..
road is dirty now, so it could be a little slippy on the in side of the tight corner before the summit car park, on the hut side.
ive done my best to sweep it, but not able to get every single stone..
ride safe.

Yeah...there sure is......
Ummmm...what were we talkin about again?
Can't believe the road works have been finished for about 2 weeks and no one has commented on here about the completed GP track quality ?
Actually I haven't had a chance to sample it since the go slow signs came down. Wanted to this afternoon but stuff got in the way. Stuff happens doesn' it. A friend went over last week in his car and said it was awesome. And we feared it would be STRAIGHT!
Even crawling through the 30 kph section the previous weeks, make that months, I couldn't help but think..ah, this shows promise.
So. Who has had the chance to RIDE the new 'straightened' section. If that's what they call straight, then a few queers will come out of the closet over this.

Rode it last weekend..... Oh yehhhhhhhh!!!!! The MT loved it, I could tell!!!
Ok, not a popular subject on here or no one around Wgtn rides much these days.
So I shot up this morning and got home the second the rain started. Surprisingly warm day but the winds picked up on the hill but hardly any traffic! That was FUN.
So the new section is ... abso-bloodly-lutely fantastic.
I can see this becoming riders favourite section. Wide with plenty of run off shoulder in places- for those oops moments maybe. Perfect smooth hotmix and pretty good visibilty through the bends. Possibly more camber could have been applied but lets not be picky.

Yep it's pretty good, just gotta watch the wind (northerly). If only they'd hotmix the rest of the hill now!

I thought it looked really promising. So all the speed restrictions are off and we're back to 100kph?

I buzzed over both ways on friday in the cage & also took a detour thru the Moonshine for old times sake. The Rimutaka's were great but the Moonshine is still a goat track although now sealed!

Oh yeah, the Rimu Hill is better than ever...the roadworks are all done as mentioned by previous posters, and most of the road surface across is now nice smooth asphalt. It just shows up the bumpy old sections more now...

The new and improved section that renders Muldoons' corner history. As seen from the drivecam of my company vehicle...

This is from summit down to almost the bottom, heading towards Welly.

You really need to work on a delayed corner entry and hitting those apexes... :)
Other than that it looks choice!

Haha, yeah the camera makes it look kinda weird as it doesn't "see" about one car length of tarmac in front of the truck. Bit hard to play Rossi with a 20 metre truck and trailer...

Its real nice up there now! Admittedly this was in the car, and it was late enough at night that it was absolutely freezing!
