View Full Version : Calling rock Gods

Big Dave

The game is simple. You have been elevated to Rock God and the gig is to hire your all time rock band.

If you can find some vid to support the claim even better - but a list will do.

You can consider how the chemisty might work, or just who you think is the stand out musician.

Dead or alive - you're a god - we can work with ghosts.

Drums
I had a hard time choosing - I mean, all these are tough.

At first I thought Stephen Morris for his work in Joy Division and New Order.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yTIpcwBTTs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4yTIpcwBTTs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Then I thought nah, Ian Paice. I used to come home from school and play Deep Purple's Machine Head as loud as the headphones in those days would go.
Nearly every afternoon. They were the first rock riffs that many of us nailed on a guitar, so it has sentimental value.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9jp3de50_d8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9jp3de50_d8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I had to consider Don Henley too. A lead vocal who can manage the sticks is a plus.

But in the end the drummer that has made me go 'wow' the most was Blondie's Clem Burke.
The dude hits the skins harder and faster than man's got a right.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IuKR2ioKQXM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IuKR2ioKQXM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Clem at the back.

Bass.
The legendary Klaus Voorman was first thought. Evryone recorded with Vorrman in the 70's.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ALVjwR3dFE8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ALVjwR3dFE8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Or another studio legend Donald 'Duck' Dunn, This is some of the best walking Bass ever.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kM7C_yNlCLU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kM7C_yNlCLU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
(The Blues Bros Brass section is my backing section.)

But really, I have a clear cut favourite. Peter Hook gets the call. Joy Division and New Order like Morris, but the way his Bass takes charge of the melody gets me every time.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HZzyZSjAQxs&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HZzyZSjAQxs&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I can't even decide on a drummer...Frank Beard? John Bonham? Rob Heaton? Phil Taylor? Neil Peart?

I'm putting this game in the too hard basket for now...

Thanks Trudes, you've helped me out no end by nominating Jason for the bass...I can't go past Cliff Burton, actually maybe a twin bass deal with Lemmy might be in order,

Wicked thought big D.

I'm no expert but there could only be 2 drummers to choose from.. The late great John Bonzo Bonham, or Danny Carey, they both beat the drums harder than Tua working on Camerons head..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJchuDzcoVs

Guitar - Eric Clapton, Jimmy Paige or Tom Morello.

Bass - John Paul Jones.

Vocals - Till Lindemann or Justin "Jack hammer" Niesen.

What ever the result, it would be loud, technical and the stage show would have lots of explosions. Bring it..

There's a bit of a treat at the end of the vid. Not all great guitar is rock.

hmmmm, if im gonna put a band together it'll have to be a raw garage band
to entertain myself and fellow bike pals whilst working on our bikes in
the shed...and drinking home brew.... so perhaps a raw three piece?

The composition of the band is entirely up to the individual gawd.

I'll have
Drums - Burke
Bass - Hook
Keyboards -
Guitars -
Vocal -

Others
Backing singer
Brass/sax/trumpet
Percussionist

Producer - or Gawd might produce it theyself - in which case probaly hire an engineer.

I don't think there is any need to nominate 'lead' and 'rhythm' guitars - these guys can do it all - just the number - 1 if that's enough for your sound, 2 would be 'standard', 3 worked for Lynard Skynard. Maybe the singer strums too.

I've worked out 1 guitar so far. For sheer versatility one is Wood, R.

wow .. ok .. so im a bit of a Southern Rock fan and loved the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd (Spelled correctly for Big Dave), Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws..

so triple lead guitar... Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson from RUSH, and Carlos Santana (just dont let him talk)

Bass - Geddy Lee from Rush or Geezer Butler from Sabbath

Drums - Neil Peart or Tommy Aldrege

Frontman - there can be only one ... David Lee Roth.. maybe let Dave Grohl sing backup

MisterD
14th October 2009, 08:17
I think Sarge has the way to go with this, it's too hard unless you think of the style of band you're aiming for...I'm going classic blues based rock, and I've given myself an extra constraint with no two members from any real band (so Bonzo, Bob Plant and JP Jones all out of contention...) three guitars 'cos it's gotta be live eh?

Drums: Ginger Baker
Bass: John Entwistle
Guitar1: Jimmy Page
Guitar2: Billy Gibbons
Guitar3: Keith Richards
Vocals: Ian Gillan or Paul Rogers, can't quite decide.

My head hurts contemplating Guitarists.

Da singa.

Co-pilot is adament that Hutchence, M. is her front man. I understand that too. I saw Michael in his Oxford Street heyday many times and that was the voice (and hair) of a rock god in it's prime.

Elegantly wasted - from the 2nd comeback.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Oanqr41-C0

But I don't think I want a rock god. I'm in charge here. I want a vocalist. A singer. Maybe even a girl?

Our daughter's middle name is Martha.

The muffin's Echo Beach for the co pilot:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TvqjYxeTODY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TvqjYxeTODY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The Motel's Martha for me. Sigh. I had a girlfriend that looked like this before I met the CP. Rode a CB250.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kLBZjdrKSpY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kLBZjdrKSpY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

But then I also agree with Jim's nomination.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PECk9A-07Pw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PECk9A-07Pw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

but he's also a god so nah.

A singer I thought - a 'voice'.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QrwO8b9iq34&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QrwO8b9iq34&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

OK - wrong track. Forget the singer bit. Mick, David Bowie, and Ian Dury, I'm sorry.

I take the portents of drowning in your own vomit as a topical rejoinder and pick Bonn.

My front man is Scott, B.

Viva le bogon!

I can but only agree and therefore your guitarist is an easy pick...Jimi Hendrix.

Carrying on the drowning/Choking thread Mama Cass would have to be backup vocals.Would make for an interesting dynamic when they play
Whole Lotta Rosie.

But these guys were pretty good in there day
