View Full Version : VFR400 plug size (or mechanic)?

Anyone know the size of VFR400 spark plugs?
I don't have the original tool kit, and can't get any of my sockets or box spanners to fit. Either the sockets won't fit down the hole, or they don't fit the plugs. I thought they may be 18mm, but no luck.
The bike was fine on Friday, but wasn't pulling today. Feels like it's only running on 3 cylinders so I thought I clean the plugs, but it seems to be a major just to get the things out (not like my Triumphs!!!).
Alternatively, anyone know of a reasonably priced mechanic (preferably near Onehunga). I'm nervous about some of the bike shops as I've heard of huge bills for what seemed like minor work, but maybe I'm just worrying about nothimh

Go to a bike shop and buy a box spanner for it ,will cost about $15.
I could not find a plug socket for my bike .

The thing is, it's not just hex size - the bike sockets tend to be special thin-wall types. The one that came with my bike's toolkit is perfect for it: well-made, fits down the (very deep) plug well easilyish, has a rubber insert that both protects the plug's ceramic insulator AND grabs onto the plug, and has a 10mm flexible hex stalk that works brilliantly with a ratchet fitted with a 10mm socket.
I don't have anything else in my toolkit - they're pretty specialised.
Perhaps a wrecker or Honda dealer will have one for your bike.

i think its a 13mm socket. Its got to be one of the extra long types. When I get home ill check.

I've tried all my box spanners and deep sockets, metric, sae, and whitworth, and none of them fit. It's hard to tell if the socket is too small, or too big, as it's so far down.
On the plus side, after pulling the fairing and tank off and having a go at all the plugs, it seems to be running 100%. Quite weird, as I took it more a ride after putting it back together, and there was no improvement on the ride out. Stopped for 5 minutes at the shops, jumped back on, and it's as good as new.
I'll still get a socket for next time, even if I have to grind down the outside wall to make it fir down the hole.
I Just need to know what size.

The small one in a three pack of plug sockets from repco for mine, same as alot of twincam jap cars.

The hex size is easy, the NGK part number tells you what hex size it is.
