Valve clearance check + adjustment

Just spoke to previous owner and my bike didnt have clearances checked at 24k. Bike is now upto 33k. How much does it cost to get the 24k service done (whats involved besides oil and valve clearances). More specifically i want to know how much it is to check and adjust the valve clearances.

Getting a teka tune done soon might hit it on the head and get valve clearances done while its in the shop.

Most of the cost is labour and varies between different makes of bikes. Maybe up to 4-6 hours of labour. Parts wise its only the shims - relatively cheap.

And if it's a typical Suzuki... the valve clearances will all be within specification.

I think ive read before that most people pay about $150-$200. That be about right?

Reason im so concerned is because when the engines cold it seems a bit noisy. Once its hit optimum running temps all the running sounds go away.

Sound unusual? Or am i just paranoid about the cold sounds.

Sounds like you should just spend the money and get a service just for your own peace of mind. As Pussy says, it's unlikely (though not impossible) that the valve clearances will be wildly out (unless you've bought an ex race bike..... :lol:)

Apparantly bike had never seen 200kph before i got it so not raced or thrashed. Well looked after.

Just a bit concerned that its noisy on a cold engine. Suppose oil isn't doing its full job straight away though.

It's probably nothing, especially as it's not noisy at normal operating temps, but again - something that can be asked about and checked out at your service.

I'd personally get them checked. Sometimes they can be a little tight even brand new- so i think its a good idea to get them checked on schedule. At the end of the day, if you can afford it i would do it, as its kinda an insurance.

The fact that it has been ridden easy doesn't mean it was necessarily good for it. The mechanic who works on my bike said that with these high performance machines (i've got a zx10r), this easy riding is actually more stress on the motor and can lead to tightening of the valves. Whereas, when the engines are used as they are designed to be, it is not as common an issue.

I've just had mine done by Just Motorcycles at 34k, just a little after the recommended 24k. Everything turned out fine and was only charged $97.50. On top of that they cleaned the air filter, replaced a missing tank mount bolt and reinsulated a chaffed wire.

Should usually be fine had mine done at 34k was within the range. Shims are cheap, labour....depends where you go.

Just make sure you trust them there are mongrels out there who will take your money and say yes it's fine and not do the checks properly.

If you were in Aucks I could have put you through to someone really good.

I should be alright for trusting my bike shop. Been with them for 2 years now and they're a good bunch. Bought my bike off them too so surely they'll be good to me. Said they would only charge an hours labour for a teka tune too. That any good?

Just clocked 90,000 on the vfr, last time the valves were checked was around 40,000 and there's no need for adjustment now. Apparently clearances (after a while) close up due to valves seating in so one has to look for lack of compression on the inlet or unusual quiet
