Well this is just great

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/2962132/Government-World-Cup-broadcasting-backdown

This is John Key's biggest cock up since being PM

Why the fuck let Maori TV have TV rights and wasting our taxpaying dollars on a TV station that isn't in the whole country its alomst as worse as having SKY TV have it. This is just Key panda-ing to the Maori party and pita Sharples cause he needs them coward

I've supported Key till now but this is a big mistake

Give it to TV3 and see if they can make more of a hash of it than TVNZ will do.

Makes sense for two govt depts not to bid against each other, will save the taxpayer money.

At least on MaoriTV it's better than the usual Sky TV only RWC coverage. Freeview is a must, I think everyone should get it!

This whole fiasco has been more than usually weak, even for these morons.

Should only cost $1.00,afterall govt said must be broadcast free to all NZ,so therefore why pay more?TVNZ will have it in theory as govt will make sure they include TV3 so to avoid a bidding war.

Does this mean that the games will be only broadcast to those who can get Maori TV, or does the "role" TVNZ plays in this mean that they broadcast the signal to the rest of NZ?

Also, will the game commentary be in Te Reo Maori?

This "snip" of an article does not give enough information (typically)

I don't see such a problem with it.

As long as those who want to watch it can see it for free, (I don't) then who cares who has the rights, as long as they have the ability to screen the games, I say go for it.

It should be in a language that all NZ understands though............ let's not be elitist here Maori TV (eh!)

Ban thugby.

Just look at the ACC savings that would make.

I heard a bit on this today. It's a bit complicated and some things I may be a bit off the ball. But as I understand..........
Maori TV put in a bid with the proviso that TV One would be involved as a sub contractor due to their increase market share of the viewer. It appears that some ministers leaked the Maori TV offer and TV One put in another bid to counter this. So essentially you had two TV chanels bidding agaist each other with taxpayer funded bids. If I recall there was also some talk of TV Three, a private TV company also getting taxpayer money for it's bid.

Govt told TVNZ to lead World Cup counter bid

But as usual Mr Flip flop is at it again. Now it’s a different ball game.

Maori TV to lead single World Cup rights bid - Key

and some on here wonder why I get off on Key so much.

The man has not got a fucken clue. It’s one thing one day and another the next. His ministers are running rampant each doing their own thing. Talk about the headless chicken…………………my god a headless chicken would run the country better than this dickhead.

Version I heard on Nat Radio this morning was that TVNZs bid had already been rejected by the IRB, so MTV went ahead with their bid, which was accepted. Then various people (ie white conservatives) got upset and started leaning on some Govt Ministers, who had seen the MTV proposals. The details of the MTV bid were then leaked back to TVNZ, which allowed TVNZ and TV3 to put together a more attractive deal, supported by jonkey and taxpayer funding (WTF is taxpayer funding supporting a private corp -TV3 - bid?).

Then after a whole lot more shit slinging, jonkey comes back on the side of MTV, with additional support from TVNZ and TV3.

Motorcyclists of New Zealand should threaten to disrupt the RWC in retaliation against the discrimination shown over the ACC charges for registration of motorcycles!

That would really piss the government off. "United we stand, divided we fall"! :headbang:

Not that I care that much (I have Sky), but it makes sense to combine the bids and only have one.

Having two organisations competing with taxpayer money for the same thing would have only benefited the IRB. My understanding is that taxpayers are already subsididing the RWC event, so why should they compete to bump up the amount of money they will have to pay to broadcast it?

If MTV can make it work, they might reduce their dependancy on Govt funding going forward (from advertising and the like).

Plus, if anyone wants to see the games live, they'll have Sky anyway.

Now that's an idea.

If you pay for Sky Sports, you'll get the rugby through your Sky subscription.

If you have free to air, you can watch the games on either MTV or TVNZ (both will be broadcasting live games).

FWIW when you consider how much money has been pumped by the government into securing the rights for the World Cup and building the stadiums, another 3 million for the broadcast rights really is pocket change.

I'm not complaining about the money spent the thing i have a problem with is the way Key flip flops and when the Maori party and the likes threaten and he gets nervous about his position

I saw on breakfast this morning a commentater saying that Key needs to grow a spine and tell things like it is and not always come across as the good guy

I'm lucky i have SKY as a luxary but getting a clear recpetion on my spare tv with bunny ears of Maori tv is not easy IMHO i believe that a broadcaster bidding for rights to an event like this should have everything it needs to bid alone and not need help from a rival and it should be able to reach the whole country

I just hope MTV don't muck this up on the world stage and make this country look like a joke its all we need after losing co-hosting rights with aussie for the World cup a while back we don't know when we will get to host this again and i bet it wont be within the next 30 years with the growth the game is having thanks to the 7's so for us to have it again everything in 2011 needs to be flawless from public transport (which is a joke right now or non existant) thru to the Staduims being built and ready in time and hopefully under budget to the TV coverage that the world will see thru the lense of most likely MTV cameras

just my 10 cents worth

Im with MTS - good on them for bidding, it is an open bidding process so it shouldnt matter what fricking station bids. Looks to me like TVNZ got the shits coz their bid wasnt accpted but MTS bid was so out went the toys and into the media it all came. Ill watch the Rugger on any station that plays it live.
