How many other countries (in the west) have an ACC system? Part of any protest maybe should suggest to partially/fully get rid of it in favor of compulsory insurance.

This idea exists in the UK and seems to work ok.

I'm keen.....

I already pay for medical, full vehicle, house and contents AND life insurance, it would be great to cull ACC from the list!

Surely this system works for the unemployed only, really I would vote it out... cause those employed pay for insurance... AND THEY PAY A LOT!

ACC works fine.

Don't buy into the hype that it is suddenly broken - cos it aint.

Whats happened is that there was a decision made several years ago to fully fund the cost of FUTURE claims. The original intent was to try to do this by 2014. Everything was going pretty well and funding coverage increased from mid 40% to over 65% where it sits today.

ACC has NEVER been in such good financial shape. Its funding would be the envy of any private insurance company and its investment management returns exceed those of most specialist investment companies. The hysteria has arisen because the GLOBAL economic recession has meant that big inreases would now be needed to meet the original timeframe.

That timeframe wasn't set down by God nor is it an immutable law of the universe. There is no reason why it can't be shifted out a few years - its not something that was even done up until this century.

The concept of ACC is unique to our country and something I'm very proud of - fucked if I'm going to overturn my identity just cos some neo-cons have stirred the pot and the easily led have got their knickers in a twist by buying into the spin.

Good points - I always thought this was a Govt. con job.

My take on it is that they have no real intention of going to $700+. When the protest kicks in they might suddenly come up with a $500 or so figure and we will be so relieved we will accept it without question and .....

we still get screwed but end up thanking them for it.

Yeah totally agree. Anyone wishing for ACC to be abolished should be very very careful what they wish for. If we lost it NZ would be a lot worse off in many aspects. As with many things in life, there is always room for improvement and optimisation but canning the whole thing is non sensical. If anything you just need to point the finger at Clarke and her labour cronies. They have screwed the country up so bad from the last 9 years that national has no choice but to man up and put things right.

The government have already announced that they will change the fully fuinded deadline to 2019. That change ahs been factored into car rego fees, which is why they are planned to increase by only $30 odd instead of the ACCs original $100 odd proposal. But the effect of the long period has NOT been factored into the bike levies, which are still identical to those demanded by ACC on the basis of a 2014 funding date.

In other words, everything else gets to delay the cost of funding the residual claims until 2019. Motorcyclists are expected to still do it by 2014.

I am still getting treatment for an accident of the other 2 wheel variety. Cage's fault. But the ACC system has been so watered down that I am severely out of pocket. Not to mention that my work decided that they didn't need me back after 3 months off :(

So give us back the right to sue, and then ACC doesn't have to fund where there is someone to blame and pay for it!

Answer is it's unique to NZ no other country in the world has the same system.

Shame it's been paying out criminals including those who suffered from blasts from cooking P.

You should read up on how things work in other countries, I paid thousands in insurance for third party on a car that cost less than $500. The insurance companies and litigation lawyers see ACC as the biggest threat to them making ALOT of money in this country and would LOVE to see it gone.

I know a guy who was insured and was contract climbing for another company, his saw wasnt running right so the boss leant him his. He had an accident (check pic)with the saw a couple weeks before his wedding. His insurance wouldnt cover it because if he was supplied the saw so they say hes an employee and the bosses insurance wouldnt because he was a contractor. Meanwhile 10's of thousands of med bills later the lawyers are rich and hes lost everything. Its been 2 years now, not a dime.

Compare what employers and employees pay even in Aus for simular cover, its alot cheaper here. And the insurance companies litigate to recover costs so to cover for that ALL insurance goes up further. Its a snowball we shouldnt start rolling.

Mates of mine in the US cant fathom such a cheap and user friendly system and how the insurance companies arent going around sueing after every accident, fall, burn, cut, near miss etc etc etc. Right now ACC doesnt look that great, but the alternatives could totally screw us.

They are trying to get us to reject ACC so the insurance industry can screw us over like they do in every other country. And by doing this Im really really really worried they will do it.

ACC isnt perfect but we are fucked if the insurance companies get there way
