OK, someone on here must know.

Where are the good goat hunting spots around the top half of the NI? (DOC land obviously, unless you can refer me to a friendly farmer or two.) Preferably within a couple of hours of Auckland.

Spent most of yesterday bimbling through the Waikato scouting around but didn't see any really likely areas. Went for a wander into Pirongia forest from the south end (damn those tracks are hard going - gotta get back to the gym) but didn't catch any goaty whiffs.

So where should I go, guys? Haven't done this before, any general goaty tips would be much appreciated.

Going to the Coldkiwi I almost bowled 2 on the side of the road just south of Te Kuiti, B4 eight mile junction!

Well, I saw plenty by the side of the road, but they were generally chained to fenceposts...

anyway, stopping on the side of a state highway with the .308 is likely to get me even *more* unwanted attention than speeding :p

So whats so special about hunting goats? I know nothing about it so its a geniun question and not an attempt to disrespect your interests...

Well, I rather like a goat curry now and then

And they're a little more plentiful and accessible than deer (for me, anyway). Goats are officially pests and need controlling, too. They're cunning little bastards and worth chasing, I reckon.

Also, AFAIK, they tend to pop up in reasonably short range, so I can put my mate's silenced .45 carbine to good use (if I ask him nicely enough) :niceone:

there's plenty up the kauraunga river, out of thames, and in the karakariki valley, west of hamilton. DOC will want to know if you're taking firearms into kauranga. i dunno who's property is karakariki, but the hamilton 4x4 club has heaps of tracks and a hut there.

Few years ago went goat hunting with some mates, we were based at a pub, in Te Akau, (the only pub) I think from memory the publican was in to it, also a guy on my shift is big on killing things , I'll see him tonight, and see if I can get more info .
Te Akau is not top half of NI, but its a bloody good bike ride to get there.

A friend who's spent some time going after goats reckons that expanding .223s are necessary to reliably put a goat down, and hunting ammo in .223 is a bit pricier than cheap-n-cheerful 7.62 FMJ. I neither own nor have borrowable access to any guns in intermediate calibers. QED...

(no, I wasn't going to waste a box of .308 Silvertips on the poor widdle goaties :p)

Ta muchly for that, sounds good, no I haven't tried down there yet.

My head was unfairly targeted by a colleague with Photoshop and a bad sense of humour. Either that or SpankMe is a long-lost relative :D

Me and the old man both use Winchester 94 lever action rifles. Him a .22mag and me a 30-30. Both were birthday presents from my girlfriend :niceone: Before that he used a Winchester 68, a .22 single shot and he never had any probs picking off goats with that. Myself, I just like using a big gun :D

I used to use a .223 in my killing days, it doesn't appeal much now though. Geez I'm getting soft.

Dayum that's nice! I'm sorely tempted TBH. Bit strapped for cash ATM though (hell, when am I *not* strapped for cash?)

Been wanting a tack-driving .308 for a while though... *nice* scope and price there too.

Where were you geographically, Jackrat? I think you mentioned it in another thread but I'm lazy...

I work at the base of Wiri Mountain, next to the quarry. There are stacks of goats cavorting all over the mountain. I understand that they are wild, but might be wrong - need to do some homework first. Anyway, it doesn't get much easier for access. The thrill fo the chase might be lacking, however.

I live in Waiuku,The price on the rilfle is what I have been offered
by a shop, you can imagine what they would sell it for,I payed $850 without the scope.
The goats on Wiri mountain are not wild,But the owner is.
Cheers.

surely in the eye at 100m it doesn't matter if they're wild or not.....

If you are talking about "Mc Laughins Mountain" which is located near the Wiri Quarry, I think you may not be able to discharge a fire arm there due to the close proximity to WORSL (The Bulk Fuel depo) I seem to recall some obscure red tape type bull shit that states fire arms are not to be used within a certian distance of a bulk fuel depo ??, Can make some enquires if you want, have a contact at the bulk fuel depo

Mate, when I lived in Manurewa I hunted rabbits around there a couple of times,I had permision to site in a center fire on the far side of the block,The goats are grazed there by a woman that pays for grazing.I don,t know who she is but I have been told in the past that you will be for the high jump if you go anywhere near them.I gained access thru, the quarry manager,I think they have the main lease on the land around there.Go an talk to them
before you do anything that would get you in trouble.
Cheers.

Blaaaaady 'ell, you're not pulling my leg are you? You obviously have *far* too much spare cash on your hands! :D

Where do you get your ammo, or do you reload for it? In which case, where the hell do you get .50 cal brass and bullets around here? Did you get an E-class license specifically for that gun or do you have a bunch of other bad-ass stuff sitting around? :p

If I had several grand and nothing better to do with it I'd want a .50 cal just *because* but I'm not sure if I'd go with a Barrett, they're pretty expensive for what you get.

Yeah, I heard they are like, 10 grand, US. There is also the Haskins, some British I think .50 cal rifle

I use a .303 for goats and a .22 to finish them off. Had a bad experience with a .22 once though - the goat just wouldn't die and screamed like a human. Really not nice! Put me off for a few days.
jr - if you're ever in Wgtn I'll take you for a hunt down our way if you want. There's quite a few goats down our valley and I go out every so often.

Dunno if or when I'll be in Wellytown, but if I do come down, I'll bring the cannons and see what I can tee up.

Anybody who needs anything more substantial than a .22 magnum to down goats can't be much of a hunter! Although I must admit that it used to be fun bowling them with my Grandpa's "30 ought six". Shooting goats called Flymo, Victa or Masport tends to get their owners a bit upset. Go to the King Country.

That's my advice!

22 mag, sure. 22LR, not so sure. Particularly with them wimpy subsonic loads.

My 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant is about the ballistic equivalent of a 30-06. The soft-tip rounds that are all I can get for it make a naaaaaasty mess. I think I'd be pretty happy toting it into elk country...

Oh, yes. Top Tip: If you're going to shove a 30-calibre rifle down a sandy rabbit hole and pull the trigger, close your eyes first.

Fond memories I have of 7.62s from my old Territorial days.. Felled the odd tree (or two) and an occasional "Waiouru blonde"...

Ok,goats again.
If your really keen go down to Pio Pio just south of Te Kuiti.
Drive about one hundred mters past the township, turn right toward the west coast, drive for about 30-40 kms until you get to the sign posted track into Letchers clearing on your left thewalk is about three hours an not much faster on a trail bike. The clearing itself is about fifty acer followed by progessively smaller ones down stream.
during winter the place is crawling with smellys.during summer they get farther back into the bush and up high.If you decideto go after them off the main clearing make damn sure you have a map, compass,an know how to use them both properly. There are also quite a few pigs in the area.
on your way in you will be walking the boundry fences of a farm that has wild goats on it.DO NOT JUMP THE FENCE, if you do the owner will burn your car and do even more horrible things to you. Also don't take a .22 in there,it is DOC controled land an .22 are illegal.you can get a hunting permit for the area
from the King country DOC office.
Have fun, don't fall off a cliff.

Yeah up in Hunua there are a few. But I got a feeling they dont recommend eating them as they poison the area. Thats what I heard, same goes for the pigs up here.
