View Full Version : Mom gives the Blue Lovely a Blow Job

As some of you may remember a few weeks ago the blue lovely had a little lie down at Laava's house and came home with the most hugely improved clutch, I was at a loss to describe the difference. She also got the Laava special carb clean and balance, so theoretically all should be sweet in her little world. However, sadly she continues to be naughty and I must look further up the food chain for some results.
Talking to my "new" bestest mentor in the world a couple of weekends ago, he encouraged me, nay he insisted I take it upon myself to give the blue lovely a blow job, so I am :D
Now there is this apparently magic stuff that comes in a kit to clean and repair rusty fuel tanks, Por 15 is its name, and I went and got myself one. This weekend is the window I have been waiting for so last night I began the process of stripping her back down again. I did not have any wine while working, but as I had already had a few glasses I thought I should be good to go.
Off comes the seat and tank. So far so good, then I took the fuel tap off the tank and drained the petrol. What a hoot! Friggen amatuer even if I say so myself. Eventually got all the fuel out and sealed off the hole with trusty duct tape. Yes, I did try making a little plate up to fit over the hole and screw it down with the tap bolts, but with no metal stuff to use, I ended up using a piece of commercial vinyl and it simply was not up to the task, too soft and leaked like a seive
Next I took off the filler cap and to my horror discovered RUST! Now not just a little bit either, it looked terrible and farnkly I thought it was all over rover for the blue lovelys tank. Peering into the tank itself reveals a patch of rust about the size of my little finger nail on the right hand side, I cant actually see into the bottom of the other side, despite having a mirror on a stick, but I expect it will be worse somehow.

Was feeling a bit gutted last night, could not imagine how I could fix the crap that was in the top of my tank. Now this is where my mentor comes in. The lovely _STAIN_ rang me this morning and basically told me to HTFU and get on with it  Of course he was actually much politer than that, encouraged me to get stuck in so after having a bit of lunch I went down stairs to tackle this stuff.
Got everything all organised and plastic wrapped the tank, that was fun in the breeze I can tell you.
Fired up the trusty, dusty vacuum cleaner to suck away all the crap I was about to scrape off and got into it with a screwdriver. You know that sound of fingernails on a blackboard  I managed to make that sort of noise a few times in the process :pinch:

Then I wire brushed the hell out of the rusty areas and low and behold I started to see some shiney bare metal :2thumbsup
Then I got really fancy and used a bit of wet and dry sandpaper and OMG :gob: I found gold. Well not gold really, more the super, duper shiney bare metal I was looking for

So, I have mixed up the first brew of stuff in this tank repair kit, a strong alkaline cleaner in hot water and poured it into the tank and given it a good old shake up  I will continue to agitate :blip: it for the next few hours and then later on this evening will empty it out and allow it to dry overnight.

Well now you see, the processes I will have to use involve suction and you just wait and see, but it also involves blowing as well, so of course my brain just veered in that direction for some reason :innocent:
And yes, it is very satisfying to work on your own bike, I am eternally grateful for the help and encouragement I get for sure

Well, I text the most wonderful and lovely _STAIN_ to give him a heads up to my attempt to do this  He rang me, and once again told me to HTFU! Man I am sure I am going to get pimples on my tongue :D
What he said was, dont read the instructions, get into it. Typical bloke
Ok, what he actually said was, "this is what I do", talked to me at length and left me to it
So, I dumped the wash, washed the tank out with fresh water, and dried it  Then I poured the rust killer into the tank and sloshed it around and around and around (read allowed the solution to contact the tank for a period of time, before I rolled it to a new position, this part took a couple of hours) tell you what, rust gets in just like Bertie Germ from my yoff! Man, what a lessson in chemistry today!
I also painted the stuff on the surfaces not actually contacting the solution

Inbetween drying the innards of my tank manually I thought it might be prudent to dismantle the fuel tap and clean that sucker out too! What a revolting mess! Honestly, my poor blue lovely has been struggling along all this time, and I offer her up fuel through this crappy mess :spanking:
For those that ask about how reserve works, I attempted to place the fuel tap along side where it sits in the tank. Not great pics but work with me here. What a mess the innards of that tap were
So I soaked them in clean petrol, and cleaned the outsides with some fab shit I dont have the name of right now. About had palpitations to see white floaty stuff in my petrol soak, but some smarty pants suggested a bit of a chemical reaction between the petrol and the cleaner. I tested it and he was right
Pay attention at school folks
Mom
17th October 2009, 17:51
It was actually really interesting to see the dullness of that rust destroying solution on my shiney bare metal, that and the fact that the innards of the tank I could actually see, turned rusty orange before my eyes, when they were dry. I risked abandoning the process to "pop" upstairs and get the dinner on.

Roast safely underway, I went back downstairs to begin the blow part of the process again, only to receive a text from some random  member on here that was crying like a little girl about it being wet, and he wanted a root.
Of course, I text him back, no time for roots, I was too busy giving the blue lovely a blow job
Mom
17th October 2009, 18:07
So now I am up to the scarey part  The tank is bone dry, the roast is safe in the oven and I really need to HTFU and put this solution in the tank.
OK! Well someone has a HUGE sense of friggen humour  There was no way on Gods green earth the lid of that sucker was coming open. I tried, then I tried some more. All I was doing was wrecking the lid. I mean to say, how hard is it to take the lid off a can of friggen paint? VERY  is the right answer in case you missed it.
What a mission! Eventually, with the help of my lovely man, we prized the lid off this not wanting to be opened can and tipped the contents in. Not all of them at first mind, about 1/2 a can. Made sure the surfaces were coated then tipped in the rest. Covered the surfaces I could see, then reversed the process to make sure I covered the surfaces I could not see.
Finished up painting the filler cap recess, I love painting

So, the blue lovely's tank is currently resting downstairs. It is upside down so the excess silver shit that actually sticks worse than shit to a blanket :innocent: is contained and can set at the top. My roast veges are in, hopefully half cooked at this point, and I need to refill my wine :D
What a cool day! I was so nervous about doing this
I have to give _STAIN_ a HUGE thank you!
All that talk of blowjobs the other weekend paid off big time for the blue lovely
Seriously though, thank you so much Bryce! Your encouragement today has been fantasric! Your blood is worth bottling indeed!
Can't wait to put the lovely back together and she will all be sweet ;)

Infact the roast did suffer a little neglect last night, but was still bloody yummy  Enough left over for cold meat sammies too :2thumbsup
Just went and checked my handiwork and the Por 15 has gone off, it is hard as nails (well the stuff I can see is anyway). It can sit and harden right up for the next week, then I will look at putting her back together again, filling her up with petrol and get her running. I really hope the carbs dont have to come off again :pinch:

Well, I finally got around to putting the blue lovely back together today after work. Everything went back together no dramas and I had no spare bolts or anything else left over.
I bought some new fuel too this morning, no sense in putting old potentially contaminated fuel back into her shiney clean and sealed tank. Poured new fuel in, turned on the choke and fired her up. She had a bit of a think about starting until the fuel was running and then away she went :D
While she was apart I took the opportunity to check and lubricate the choke mechanism, CRC is a wonderful thing indeed. Now the choke creeps closed so I had to hold it full on for a little while. Her idle was a bit low until she warmed right up and then she sat there happy as a happy thing idlling away.
No chance to road test her tonight, but will take her for a spin tomorrow.

She is fixed, fixed I tell ya!
Over 200 kms now since I put the tank back on and I can confidently say the issues I have been having are a thing of the past
A few coughs and surges for the first 20 kms I suppose, though nothing as bad as it has been. The corners of my mouth turned down just a little bit, but then I realised it was not doing it anymore :D Guess she needed a bit of a thrash to clear the system of crappy old fuel.
Today I have done 150 odd k's at a reasonable pace for the most part and not a hint of a problem. YAY!! :wari:

Out of interest I have just done a fuel/distance test, wanted to see if anything has changed as a result of clean gas. I now get 19.5 kms to the litre. I have a tank range of 185 kms before reserve (9.5 ltrs), leaving 2.5 ltrs reserve in the tank. So a complete distance range of 230 kms between fills.
Much improved from what it has been. I am using 95 octane, wonder what it would be on 91?

Sounds about right Anne. In theory it would do worse mileage on 91 but prob not by a large margin. But is all running sweet now?

It had a couple of moments when I first went out on Friday night, probably 20 k's of naughtiness, then it cleared. Refuelled and did 185 k's of awesome running before hitting reserve. As soon as I went to reserve it started coughing and sluttering again, but that cleared in 10 k's and sweetness once again. I am picking there was still shit in the fuel tap, much as I tried to clean it out, now that has cleared I think I will be fine.
Only one weird thing left, and this may well be a blue lovely quirk
I lubed up the choke mech on the back of the carbs. Now the choke wont stay open, it slips back to shut. She is a very slow to warm up engine, a good 5 mins to get any kind of idle out of her, even then only between 500 and 1000 rpm, nursing required. I had considered turning the idle up a bit but...
When she is properly warm she idles at 1500 rpm, which makes me want to turn it down :D
I can live with that

Try spraying a bit of CRC "Kleen a Carb" around the choke mechanism, Mom.
That should get rid of excess lubricant that may be causing the choke to not stay on

Actually Anne you should do this while the BL is running and make a point of spraying a small amount on the carb rubbers. These are the carb to engine mounts not the carb to airbox. One of the rubbers in particular that I noticed was starting to perish,ie crazy cracking type appearance. It could be years before it is a problem but if the engine suddenly speeds up, then it is cracked thru and already sucking air. Worth doing. If it is sucking air, even a tiny bit, you will never get it to run proper. I don't think this is the case but is very simple to check. Oh by the way, I lubed the bejesus out of all the cables when I had it all apart! Cos I'm like that!
