Seems I may have landed myself a job as coordinator / organiser for the 'Naki, so:

Potential riders sign here!! with suggestions for date and route(s).

We have 3 Nat MP's cover the Taranaki region, Jonathon Young, Shane Adern and Chester Borrows. All 3 need to be aware that bikers are not going stand for these extortionate increases.

If you need / want to chat about it, PM me for my mobile number

Just for the record- Regional BIKEOI are nothing to do with BRONZ (unless BRONZ Taranaki wants to pick up on it ).

The National BIKEOI will only be a BRONZ initiative if the meeting so decides. If not it'll be a KB BIKEOI or just a plain BIKEOI. But none of that affects the regional ones.

Lets get into it regardless

Actually , strictly speaking, BRONZ could only mount an Auckland BIKEOI, because we're BRONZ (Auckland), and there's no time to convene a BRONZ National meeting (they take about two years !) .

I think you need to sit back and contemplate what is needed to achieve the greater goal.

Ixion might well be getting a sense of great self gratitude at the moment but will that see us achieve our goal?

As I've already said - lets just wait and see what BRONZ says.

Indeed, though Ixion's use of offensive language on the home page of this site and elsewhere in the ACC threads is probably not a good look as far as the clean cut and educated front we are supposedly trying to present to the powers that be.

I applaud his efforts to organise things, but we must be mindful that this website as the largest motorcycling website in the country does come under scrutiny from others beside ourselves. Katman is I feel, right in the regard of keeping the language toned down and on the point of having an organised representation.
Lots of little protests will not have much effect if they result in watering down the main offensive which should be a protest ride to parliament combind with petitioning the government and attracting mass media coverage of our position.
I'm by no means suggesting that we shouldn't stage these local protests, but please don't let that be your lot, thinking that you have done your bit and not join whatever national action is planned by BRONZ.

So, now that we've got all the idle banter out of the way - what dates are we proposing and what course of action will be taken once we actually gain the attention of the MP's in question?
I'm in whatever the date as far as anything in New Plymouth goes and may also be up for a Wanganui mission.

Keep in mind this is not just about higher charges to motorcycleists, but also an attack on the motorcycle industry, that does supply alot of bikes for work purposes in Taranaki, ie farm bikes.
Road bike sales may not be as large in Taranaki, but if ACC was to effectivly quash road riding, then the costs of off road riding would have to go up to make up for the short fall, and many bike dealerships may have to close, because overheads would be to great.

This is a reality - I was talking to one of the major dealers in Taranaki the other day, he showed me his sales figures YTD compared to last year, down 60%! And I'm sure he's not alone.
Things are just starting to pick up with the recession gloom receding and some summer weather on the way and then the industry gets hit with this.

taff1954

Whether BRONZ picks this up or not, MOTORCYCLISTS across NZ need to pull together to fight these proposed changes. Most will agree that Nick Smiths' figures appear to be based on what are, at a minimum, flawed statistics.

If these increases in ACC levies go ahead, it will force many bikers either off the road, or to run the gauntlet with no rego (and like as not, no warrant either). We, as a significant sector of the road-using public, have to ensure that that any changes are based on sound, audited figures, and that the processes are transparent. Local (National Party) MP's also need to be reminded that most bikers are voters as well - we each have 2 votes at an election, electorate and party. Some electorates are close enough battles that the bikers vote can swing an entire election around.

I've put my hand up to try to get the ball rolling here in New Plymouth. What is needed right now is for a few to come forward with sound ideas to take our views to the local MP's. Like most, I have a job and a family to worry about as well, I cannot, as much as I'd like to, dedicate 100% of my time to this cause. So if you are really willing to get involved, PM me for my mobile number and let's get talking.

If BRONZ (or anyone else for that matter) decides to coordinate a nationwide process, then it's easy for us to fall in if or as necessary. In the meantime, lets get Taranaki's bikers moving on this NOW.

BTW, Jonathan Youngs electorate office is on the corner of Liardet St and Gill St - that would be the logical end point for a ride, but from where and when?

la 102
18th October 2009, 11:56
once times, and route for the ride is established, it would be good to advertise in newspaper, or in local motorbike shops, to spread the word. Cause im not sure how many of the naki's bikers use this website.
id like to help where i can, but im only young... (17 yrs). i guess im here to make the numbers lol

Taff, good to see you sorting out NP. Well done for putting your hand up mate. For a taranaki ride post details and I'll passt it to all south naki riders that I know.
For the Welly ride ( once a date is decided ) I anticipate everyone joining in as the ride moves south.

I'm at Action Suzuki in hawera if you ( or anyone else ) is passing.

Have now got a couple of non-KBers onside, just trying to establish when our local MP will be on deck - little point in trying to take a message to him if he's in Wellington. So far the best suggestion made is to have 2 groups of riders (north and south Taranaki) converge on the outskirts of NP and ride in to the city centre to the electorate office. More as I learn more

It'd be a pretty fair bet that there will be a contingent from the Naki (possibly including King Country and beyond who travel via SH3) but I suspect details are undecided and on a 'need to know' basis at this point

For all waiting on an update on the ACC protest in New Plymouth:

Jonathon Young, MP for NP has agreed to meeting a delegation of Taranaki bikers on Tuesday 3rd November. This, unfortunately, is the ONLY date he will agree to.
Naki Rat, Pussy and I will be getting together Sunday afternoon to put together a workable proposal for the ride. Paulmac down in Hawera has indicated he can help rally the troops from down south.
Being a mid-week event and at relatively short notice, I realise we'll struggle get huge numbers of bikes on the road, but I'm certain we will get enough to bring public attention to the cause. There are already a few from ouside the KB ranks I've spoken to personally who will be looking to join in, and the ride is yet to be publicised outside this forum.
Barring earthquake, volcanic eruption, or my daughter going into labour a week early, I should be able to post something semi-final tomorrow evening or Monday morning.

Ride safe over the long weekend

As it's all about gaining public support I don't think pissing people off by having (illegally) noisey bikes is going to help our cause
If we get a good turnout the amount of bikes will be our biggest advantage in attracting attention in a positive way.

November 3 is definitely on for New Plymouth, The basic plan is have everyone assemble at the large rest area at the intersecion of SH 3 and Mangorei Rd at 1 pm, leaving at 1:30.

The route will be into the city on SH 3 / Coronation Ave, right through to Molesworth St, then down to Liardet and to the National party offices. We will deliberately avoid Devon St. Although that may cost us a little in terms of exposure, we avoid the risk of fragmenting the ride, and of getting offside with the general public. There are still a few small details to be worked out, plus coordination with South Taranaki, but we do now have a plan.

Naki Rat and Pussy are also well involved with setting this up (thanks for this arvo's meeting guys).

I have accommodation booked in Petone for Monday and Tuesday nights so also plan to do the trip down Monday and return Wednesday.

Taff, Pussy and I discussed same yesterday and concensus was that the ride into Wellington on Tuesday (17th) is pretty much out of the question from any further than about Wanganui. By working the travel durations backwards from the planned start times at Porirua or Hutt Valley the departure time from the Naki makes for a huge day with potential safety issues, especially for smaller bikes or those not experienced in group riding.

We plan to put more thought into the National Bikoi once we have the NP one under our belts and will keep all posted at that stage.

As per the earlier post, Tuesday is definitely on, all details confirmed, HOWEVER...

We may have a few on small scooters who want to join. The ride has a couple of km on SH 3, - 100k zone. For the safety of these scooters, we're recomending that they wait alongside the racecourse on Coronation Ave, (just above Boys' High) and 'zipper in' as the main ride passes.

If you're going to be on one of these scooters, or know of someone who will be, please make sure this message gets out.

In light of the delay in supply of protest T-shirts I have approached Mimic photocopying (Level 2 Centre City) about getting some done in time for our protest ride/s on 3rd and 17th.

Mimic now have the Bullseye T-shirt design and the bumper sticker on file as JPGs. The price for printing onto T-shirts is not cheap but it is approximately 1 hour turn around depending on how busy they are at the time. Just ask for the ACC Protest designs and they should be onto it.

Printing onto customer's shirt is about $25 for an A4 sized 'bullseye' design, or $39.50 to print two shirts as they can print 2 x A4 transfers as an A3. Extra if they supply the T-shirt obviously.
They can also print vinyl bumper stickers though at 5 per an A3 sheet they work out about 5 for $50.

Being a Tuesday, workday and all that, we expected 30, 40, maybe a few more. To the several hundred that turned up, KB and non-KB alike, thanks.

With a little help from an ex MP (thanks Harry:niceone:) we took a message to our local Nat MP, which as Pussy said, was well received by him.

Thanks all that worked behind the scenes, Naki Rat, Pussy etc. And Patrick for traffic control.

And now on to Welly:rockon:

Well I just thought that was a fantastic turn out, I gotta be honest I was quite worried that it might just be 15 blokes in a lay-by, but no, bloomin hundreds of people!

Well done every one behind it and well done to every one that turned out, made me proud to be a Taranaki biker today and then some. Brilliant.

The bloody Camera battery conked on me before I even got to the main bit but here's the three shots I did get. I only post them because you may be able to see yourself,I blame the stuffin camera operator myself.

I don't know who owns the bike in shot two but what a stunner it is

I think I can just see Nadroj in shot 3 maybe? And a very nice R5? you don't see many of those about.

Cheers guys.

+1 on the kudos to taff, Naki Rat, Pussy and others involved in making this a success. Like others I was absolutely stunned (and quietly chuffed) at the excellent turn out.
Somebody must have had a word with the folks upstairs too, because the weather wasn't looking that flash in the morning, but come zero hour the sun was out and it had turned into a cracker day.
Good to meet a few fellow KB'ers too, even if it was brief - only problem with it being a work day I guess.
Also, thanks to Patrick and his work mates for helping make the ride run smoothly and safe.

Well done lads.

Unfortunately work got the better of me, but I did go past the assembly point at 12.30pm and was amazed at the turn out by that time.

As I was heading south from there, the stream of bikes still heading towards the assembly point was even more amazing.

Who knew there were that many bikers in the 'Naki?

I stood next the reporter as she interviewed a couple of people, she seemed to genuinely want to understand our concerns over the issue. Good for her and the Daily News.

I don't think the day could have gone any better really, Short of old Nicky turning up and killing the proposals on the spot. I was even given verbal support by a couple of passers by as they weaved in and out of the sea of bikes and a fair bit of thumbs up and tooting from passing cars. Maybe we have got a bit more support in the none biking community than I thought.

Well I think If bikers will have to pay Higher Fees than the Weirdo Latex Wearing Camel Toed Cyclists that always get run over on the road user and tax maintained roads. and they dont pay anything. they are a distraction and they cause accidents as people laugh at there Bums bobbing in the air.and they ride side by side. and get bowled over. and that is why weird cyclists should pay more tax on cycle tyres to pay for the cost of the accidents they contribute too.And because they are a strange breed.

What a great turn out, and on a work day, the polies need to have a look at the average age of those there, and work out how many have influence over voters. How many of us with adult kids, and employees etc who sympathise with us.... and of course beware of the usual trick, of starting high, and then when the rego is set at $400.00 per year, we all think we have won, but that is what they wanted all along.

I received a pack of flyers for the National Bikeoi from Lars, to be distributed wherever bikers are found - bike shops, servos, pubs, wherever. Let me know how many you want, and how to get them to you. I suggest a PM to save cluttering the thread. Now's Good (sorry Clear)

4th November 2009, 20:23
Now that we have the Naki Bikeoi done and dusted it's time to look forward to the main event in Wellington on the 17th.

I'm planning to make the trip down on the afternoon of the 16th rather than doing the whole trip end to end with the massed ride on parliament in one huge day.
BRONZ have a ride organised for those who prefer to do the Tuesday morning ride leaving 7.00am. There are flyers at Energy Honda and elsewhere with further details on that.

A number of people have been in contact regarding the Monday trip down and a group ride appeals. For those that want to join in I'm intending to leave Egmont Village at 1.00pm so that seems like a good place to kick things off. Plenty of room to gather, fuel up (EFTPOS only available) and we will depart on time this time

It'll be a sedate trip down, for obvious reasons and no doubt we'll pick up a few strays along the way.
See you then

I agree, we have to keep the momentum going, even after the 17th, so any local or regional action would be good. Maybe protest action with placards/banners at public places with all the necessary info of the campaign for the uninformed public to see.

I'm having a tough time in the office with the apathetic and ignorant bunch of sheeple (even motorcyclists/scooterists). I'm trying to educate them why were protesting. Some even try to find excuses not to make submissions to ACC, so they're trying to justify their apathy and laziness.

It's so easy to lie to these zombies, no wonder National think they can get away with it.

Interesting approach put forward by Mom to park out areas of Auckland with motorbikes as a disruptive protest so what opportunity do we in the Naki have to do a similar protest, perhaps even as part of a synchronised nationwide protest?

Can we get enough bikes together to park out the Waiwakaiho Valley parking area on Sunday morning? We got close to 400 on the Naki Bikeoi on a weekday so what can we acheive on a weekend?

Arrive at opening time and spend an hour or two over coffees and shopping??

I'll have a flat white thanks.

Posters on the bikes to explain this is what happens when bikes are taxed off the road and replaced with cars?

I'll check later today on details such as number of parking spaces and opening times at The Valley.

Perhaps somebody can check out Centre City for the future?

I suggest the Taranaki riders all gather DIRECTLY out side the gates of the milk plant in Hawera, and stop there trucks getting on the road as your form of protest, are sure TV would love that

PS, well done to all involved in yesterdays protest ride

Ookay. And the point of protesting by pissing off Fonterra is?
We currently have the support of much of the public and need to keep it or we will get a kicking :spanking:

Mission Bay is a little out of the way for a Sunday coffee so we'll have to make do with The Valley complex at Waiwakaiho.

There are only 200 or so parking spaces within easy walking distance of the coffee place and Subway so latecomers may have to double up on parking spaces. The aim is to demonstrate to the public the congestion that we would be causing if motorcycles are priced off the road by ACC.

Food and coffee places open at 7.00 and 7.30 respectively but as Briscoes and Rebel Sports are the first shops to open at 9.00 I plan on getting there around 8.30 for a leisurely coffee. Any cars there at that time can be replaced by bikes as they vacate parks. Probably hang around until the remaining shops open at 10.00.

The press that gave us the positive exposure of the Naki Bikeoi have been invited to drop in for a coffee with us.

See you there

Most of the cars in there before opening time are staff cars and will stay there all day. To begin with you'll just piss off about 20 (if your lucky) overworked under paid retail workers. The owner of BBs cafe is a biker, just for info, and I will be turning up 'bout nine for work myself so I'll shout ya a coffee.

I was completely blown away by the shear number of bikes in Wellington, and am proud of the contribution that Taranaki made to the cause. The level of riding during the protest was superb as well. It was a great experience, and I may never again be surrounded by so many bikes. It was an amazing display of solidarity and of what can be accomplished if people actually DO something about a problem instead of just TALKING about it. Let's keep the pressure up, and show the lying politicians that we're not push-overs.

Those members of the public that may complain about our actions need to be reminded that they can thank us later for fighting to keep ACC affordable and out of the grubby paws of overseas insurance companies. I do however agree that we must select our protest actions carefully, both in terms of public opinion and keeping the interest of a sufficient number of riders to participate in relevant action.

The ride back to the Naki was wet and cold, but boy, I'm glad I went down there.

I'll do my bit.

See ya there.:niceone:

BTW,we should wear our anti-ACC apparel so the public know we're not just a bunch of louts.
And it wouldn't hurt to hand out some flyers with stat's on them too.

Anyone else see the 2 Triumphs down just south of Wanganui. They went past other bikers at a reasonable rate not long prior to their hickup. I hope they were OK.

I've started another thread (Sticky) for Sunday's coffee morning.

If we can get some idea via that thread of how many are likely to show we'll approach BB's and Subway in advance if necessary to warn them that they may be busier than usual.

Nothing wrong with bad attitude, so long as it's used constructively. 5,000 plus people in Wellington on Tuesday would have been described that way by some, but regarded positively by many
