View Full Version : Fork oil - if not Ohlins, then what?

My fork seals need replacing asap, and thought I'd treat myself to some Ohlins fork oil - but at $70 for a 1L bottle I'm convinced it's been extracted from the frozen hulk of a Woolly Mammoth and while I know the price is justifiable, as a poor student I can't really afford it right now.
Can anyone suggest a good quality alternative?

WTF?!? (Whatever the fook WTF?!? means). I was charged only $51-ish dollars by CKT - obviously a bargain then. BTW (whatever that means) - it's not woolly mammmoth oil - it's BabyLesbianAfghaniFurSealPenguinWhale oil. Not quite as rare, but because it's on the WWF (WTF?!? another ferkin acronym!) protected species list, it's more expensive and exclusive. Very slippery too.

Maxima 7wt racing synthetic has a similiar centistroke rating and is of decent quality

I bought BelRay for 30 bucks, better than the catweazle piss that was original.

This is for forks, not for the motor. Robert Taylor is NZ's resident Ohlins expert so it's fairly safe to say he knows what he is talking about.

$70 is probably the cheapest hot-up there is. Just buy it. It's not like it's $700, and even if it was it would probably be worth it too.

This forum thread (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=390797) has a link to fork oil information. Pretty interesting.
