A 16-year-old is in critical condition after he and his father crashed while riding farm bikes in Taupo overnight. Police said that alcohol appeared to be a factor.

The two farm hands from Taupo had been riding the bikes north on Tram Rd, about 12.55am, when they hit a bank and crashed, Sergeant Dave Frazer said.

The father, 35, was thrown 15m after hitting a drain and going into the bank.

The teenager lost control of his bike after hitting the bank, sliding 35m into a gully.

A family member found them after they failed to return home.

The teenager was airlifted to Waikato Hospital with critical head injuries, while the father was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital with moderate injuries.

Mr Frazer said speed did not appear to have been a factor in the crash, but alcohol did.

Definitely propaganda. A motorcycle crash around the time of ACC levy rises? I definitely smell something fishy in the air.

Exactly what the govt wants to read,except it should be classed as a work accident,on private property,involving a motor vehicle.Why say a quad is a motorbike,when most agree a bike in this case(acc costs)are used only on road,so therefore exempt off road accidents.

If the rego increase will pay for road accidents fine,but then research the actual costs incurred from accidents involving bikes,which are the bike riders fault,not those hit by other road users,i.e cars,trucks,buses.

Whats that tell you about the brains of people? Most likely uninsured bikes/ No reg or wof and will be put down as a road bike crash

Police say alcohol was a factor in a crash near Taupo which has left a father and son in a critical condition in hospital

The pair were riding their motorbikes in the early hours of the morning on Tram Rd, just off State Highway 1 early this morning when the bikes left the road and crashed into a gully.

When the pair did not return home, a relative went searching and found them in a serious condition. It is not known how long they had been in the gully. St John paramedics stabilised them at the scene before they were transferred to hospital in two helicopters. The son was taken to Waikato Hospital and his father is in hospital in Rotorua.

Why should the Motorcycle statistics be raised by many thousand because of a couple of drunken idiots?

what kind of parent would take his 16 year old kid out drinking and then let him ride.. sliding for 35 meters sounds like a fair bit of speed was involved too, though the authorities don't seem to think so.
Bet those two never paid rego on bikes..

Check it out on Google maps. Tram Road is very much a secondary road running between and through forestry area, East of SH1 midway between Taupo and Atiamuri. My guess would be that it is a metalled road.

The details of this accident including how it is reported could actually help our cause as it is very much an example of a motorcycle incident that involves parties that will not be targeted by the proposed ACC levy increase yet will be statistically recorded as a motorcycle road accident.

Tram road is a sealed private road owned by the forestry company (Was CHH, but I'm not sure that is still the case). The public are excluded from this road.

Access is by permit only, last time I we used them, no speedlimits yee harr.................health & safety rules would now apply.

The report in the local paper (Taupo Weekender) clearly states that they were on farm bikes, and right in the first sentence.
