Just to narrow it down a bit. When it's cold, if I don't give it enough herbies and let it idle too slow it may stop, won't go again for about five minutes then all's good. Today, weathers moderately warm, I idle it for a bit like usual and it then stops, will run if I rev it, but idle it and off it goes. Bugger, now it will run for a few moments then sounds like it's used all the petrol that's dribbled through. In line four with 4 carb's (well, it would have I suppose). Crap in the fuel line? witches curse? Take to the bike shop?

Sounds like a bit of PEBKAC to me. Try starting it this way ;
Full choke (check its all the way on), key on, kill off, two full twists of the throttle then release, open throttle just a tiny bit, clutch in, hit the starter. Bike should start instantly and revs should build to a high idle. Let it run for about ten seconds, then slowly slowly ease the choke off until the revs drop to about 1000 above normal idle rpm. LEAVE the choke there and ride the bike away with the revs slightly up. Nudge it down just a tiny bit more if it starts revving too high. After a few minutes riding, flip the choke off completely.
Let us know if that solves it.
