View Full Version : Damn gravel!
Sycophant
29th October 2003, 12:58
So in my attempt to ride to Raglan with Firefight this morning I had a run in with some gravel. I am okay, the bike is okay(ish) but I decided not to carry on to Raggaz.
Anyway, I have a snazzy phone-camera so here are some pictures...
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/corner.jpg
This is the corner in quesiton - I basically came at it a little fast, underbraked, and hit the gravel. It should have been okay, I took many corners like it at similar speed, but this one just didn't like me.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/jeans.jpg
My jeans - not Draggin's unfortunately, but they did okay this time. The reddish stains are blood from my cut knee. They are in the wash at the moment, we'll see it that stain will come out.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/indicator.jpg
This is where the right indicator used to be. It's not there anymore.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/front.jpg
My front right fairings. They are more scratched than they used to be. I am claiming that I don't like their bumpiness and am trying to sand them flat - you can believe that if you want.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/exhaust.jpg
My exhaust. Deffinately didn't look like that before. It still has a few little stones in it that I can't get out. I will worry about that later.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/brake.jpg
It's bent, but it still works - not that I use it often. I think I will be taking to that with a hammer very soon.
http://dylan.wibble.net/pix/badge.jpg
The x913 badge, I think it looks cooler that way. I might just leave it like that. You know, for street cred.
Thanks very much to Firefight for taking me along for the ride, and for having a first aid kit. That was very helpful.

Ouch. A nice reminder to me too that I should always put my riding pants on and not my jeans, even if its for a 'quick' trip.
Hope you're feeling better soon. I'm definitely not looking forward to ever dropping my baby (fingers crossed).
And the scratched on the logo - they do sort of look like motion blurring don't they?

Sorry to hear/see about the unfortunate Sycophant. I had an identical spill a while back. Its bitch when you hit the gravel and there is nothing you can do about it till the bike falls over (At high speed ofcourse).
A good reason to get some crash knobs fitted if you can. They can save a lot of money in terms of repair bills if properly installed.

Sorry to hear about your fall Sycophant. I hope it doesn't put you off.
It is always a hard thing seeing your baby lying on the road scratched and broken no matter what.:argh: Glad you weren't hurt too badly. Good on you FF for being there and being prepared, he's a good KB'er.
But, if it is any consulation my bike was knocked over today at the dentist.
:angry2:
It was parked by itself at the end of some parallel spaces but some F'ng cow in an SUV!!!!!:angry2: :angry2: :angry2: decided she needed six spaces to reverse into and then my bike was in her way as well. Over it went, damaged mirror, bent handle bar, scratched anodised alum bar end, scrathes along the length of the fairing end to end and a snapped off anodized rear set.
"I didn't see it" was the response, then "sorry, you shouldn't be parked there anyway, it's for cars". So after refusing to cooperate I called the cops and THEY CAME within 5 minutes.( I will write a letter thanking them). They told her it was her fault, too bad, so provide the info or they would arrest her.:D Thank you boys in blue!!
NO license, no insurance, not her car, was her sister's , took it without permission, wasn't sure if she had insurance, blah, blah, blah. Now it's up to the insurance company to sort out but I bet it will cost at least $1500 to fix.:(
And I didn't even get the joy of a ride in the country before hand. Just goes to show it can happen any time, anywhere.:shit:

Damaging your pride and joy while getting your teeth drilled
Neither is desireable - as for the lady - where is Jake the Muss when you need him.
Sorry to hear - it seems to be that the silly 'minor' accidents are the ones that cause the most nuisance factor as well

Hi BB,
An interesting thing I learned a couple of years ago is that if your vehicle is parked and in clear view it's ALWAYS the other persons fault if they hit you. Even if you were parked on a no-parking area or what-ever. I found out when some guy tried to BS me saying I shouldn't of been there, in the end he had to foot the bill.
If it makes you feel any better I was in a shop 4 weeks ago when some teenager decides to hop on my MV. But he didn't realise when he hopped on the side-stand came up so when he got off the bike went down :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:
Now I've got minor scuffs on the left side panel, mirror, bar-end and a shorter clutch lever. I heard from a witness that the bike feel on his leg and he couldn't get out from under it :niceone: He had to ask someone passing by to help him lift the bike up.
The first I knew was when I jumped on my little finger slipped off the end of the clutch lever (NZ$230!!!).
Bugger!!

Nope, he took off. I only just missed him apparently. Just imagine the fun I could of had if I'd walked out of the shop to find him pinned under the bike.:bash:
It was parked outside a cafe in Petone so two women told me what happened. I actually got a reasonable description of him but I haven't had any luck finding him.

What the hell is the world coming to when a man can't leave his scoot outside without some ignorant prick f***ing around with it?
Imagine HIS face if you went to his home and played around with his stereo/playstation or whatever just because it took your fancy!!
What kind of sorry-arsed cheese-dick mother-f***er just climbs on a parked motorbike without asking permission? - I'd move to a better class of town:angry2:

I've heard that anyone reversing their vehicle is 100% at fault. I had a woman reverse into my bike, pushing it off the sidestand, then pulled out of her carpark & left the scene. Luckily 2 different witnesses took rego details & one of them notified the police. She wasn't too impressed when the bill came in at approx $1500!
Sycophant - glad you emerged relatively unscathed & were able to ride your bike home at least.

FWIW, I wasn't lacking in concentration at all, I just misread the corner. Didn't have my helmet-radio-of-doom on or anything...
But yeah.
Personally, I think I might have been more pissed at the knock-over, because it would be totally out of my control. Of course there is the relief that there's no way I could be hurt in that circumstance.

Hey, look on the bright side - you may have scratches, but I had to ride in this morning without anything to rest my right foot on :p
It must *really* hurt when someone scratches up your MV. I don't know if I'd have the balls to commute on one... I'd break down in tears if it got scratched or dropped :(
And what the hell is it with someone walking up to a parked bike and having a sit on it? I'd go f$*%ing ballistic if someone tried that on and I caught them - I'd assume they were trying to nick it. Not that the FXR is at the top of the list of desirable scoots, but you get my drift... matter of principle.
Funnily enough someone did once ask to have a sit on the FXR when I was parking it up... he quite liked it :D

I don't know which insurance company you use Bikerboy but generally if you are hit by an uninsured driver and you do get their details like you did in this case and it is clearly their fault then you shouldn't have to pay excess or lose you no claim bonus, so hopefully it should cost you nothing.
For Syc and MatthewT the picture is a bit gloomier because you will be stung a bit when making a claim if you haven't done that already.

I won't claim, my excess is higher than the repair bill. The new clutch lever is on the way ($230) and the paintwork isn't major so I'll leave it until winter to respray.

At least MV now sell the brake levers in 1 piece, until recently you had to buy the whole brake lever assembly (lever + fluid reservoir). Now they were expensive !!
A guy in canada makes a set of levers (CNC machines from a billet slab) for the MV for US$140 which is about the same price as the clutch lever. I probably should of got those since my lever is late already.

Boy this thread sure sparked a hornet's nest of replies.
Sycophant's situation is worse as it could cause him loss of confidence, and reduce his enjoyment. Don't let it get you down happens to all of us sooner or later mate. My case was upsetting but thats what insurance is for, and it was definitely her fault. The cops said even if i were illegally parked it wouldn't matter. I would get a ticket from the council but nothing else. It won't cost me so it's over.
I'm not going to let it ruin things, most of the scratches have buffed out, can barely see them now. The brake lever is a lot nicer than a honda's, no offence, but not ten times nicer.
That's the price of italian bikes. Fair enough. It is the wait that is the real pain. I need them to order a new mirror, and gear change lever (bent), I'm not going to repaint looks fine so I'll wait for worse, touch wood.
Thanks all for the support, oh was that negative bit really posted? Some people are really sad.

Nah, what was conserning me the most was they seemed more interested about yet another pointless photograph than there sons saftey. I had been riding it all day and the pipes where red hot, you dont have to get to close to it to feel the heat, plus the child was only little and the bike sits on a lean so he would have had a hard time ballancing himself to pose for a stupid photo Im not surprised he fell backwards. As far as the $600.00 goes, this happened 3 yrs ago and they will never see a cent from me. I didnt see any money either but I did take it as a learning curve, not to leave my bike sitting to far away for too long. If I can park it on the foot path I will and I'm straight in and staight out, if theres a que I'll go elsewhere.:niceone:

Hi Sycophant - sorry to hear of your off, glad you're okay, and I must look into one of them phones!
Outside my work there is a bike park. On one end the footpath curves out towards the road, so that's fine, but the other end is a loading zone. In the last couple of years there's been three times that I'm aware of when bikes have been knocked over.
First time was early in the mng, I was on my way into the building. Saw a white Commodore parked in the loading zone, and a Katana parked in the bike park. Five minutes later one of my workmates comes to see me and says he's just seen a white Commodore knock over a white bike. The “lady” driver heard the noise, got out, had a look, pretended to leave a note, and drove off. As it happens, I knew the rego of the car because I knew a previous owner. Didn’t know the Katana owner. Left a note on the bike for the owner to contact me, which she duly did She went around to see the “lady” who said “oh sorry, didn’t see the bike there, I didn't know I knocked it over”, and denied that she’d got out of the car to have a look. I would have decked the bitch.
Second time the guy from the drycleaners just along from the bike park backs his van into the bikes, two go down (SV650 and 750SS). Luckily there’s a gap that day between those two and the rest so there’s no more domino effect. Once again, one of the girls from work happened to be outside and saw it all, rushed up and told me. I left a note on both bikes to contact me, and the drycleaner guy ended up paying for the (pretty expensive) damage. (He’s 90 in the shade and can hardly see - you take your drycleaning in there and he has to hold the docket six inches away from his eyes to be able to read it - I don’t get my drycleaning done there any more).
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. The 750SS has replaced his front brake lever, mirror, right-hand indicator and fairing panels and it’s all looking shiny and new. It’s late (around 7.30pm I think), not much traffic around, no other bikes in the bike park. Poor sod comes to go home and guess what - the SS has been knocked over again. It’s now without it’s lowers while they’re getting fixed…again. Let alone the other damage to levers etc. No note left by the car driver. Bastard. What goes around comes around (I hope!!)
I’m going to write to the Council and ask if they can put up one of those bar thingys you sometimes see, inbetween the end of the bike park and the loading zone.

Try about $35000 dude. Check it out on bikepoint. Now you know why BB would've been feeling bad... even though anyone who owns an MV is obviously a rich cunt with far too much spare cash :p
(hey, BB, you could always have bought *another* MV, chucked it in the garage and used it for parts! Save the shipping wait...)
:D

I don't consider myself a rich cunt. Buying a $36k bike may seem extreme but would you call everyone owning a $36k car a rich cunt as well ?? I just decided to spend my hard earned money where I'd enjoy it the most.

$36K is *still* less than the sticker price on just about any big-twin Harley, a Goldwing or a BMW tourer, etc. So you're right on that one. Hell, I'd go in hock for an MV myself if my priorites weren't elsewhere at the moment (sigh)
And I'll call *anyone* a cunt, if I'm drunk enough :D

Well, buy a _cheap_ Harley for say $30k and then how much for add-ons to make as good as any other bike ?? I know some Harleys go for over $40k, the v-rod I think was closer to $50k.
Goldwings start at $48k new. Granted BMW's are cheaper but they aren't in the same league.
I suppose what I was getting at is that a reasonable number of people could afford an MV, but most put house/car/holiday in front of it.
I know economic sense says buy a cbr/gsxr/zxr/r1 but sometimes emotion overrides commonsense.
But then again I can be a right cunt when I want to :p

I guess you aren't a rich C&T if you buy a new MV, Matt.
However, if you trade it in on a new one each year for the next few years people may start to talk :p
In all seriousness, I applaud your good taste but I'm bloody jealous...

I can't imagine trading up to a later model. MV have decided that the basic design is a classic. The new 1000cc F4 looks the same as mine just a couple of different decals and colour options.
Besides I've done 35,000k's in the two years that I've had it so I doubt the trade-in value would be that great. Probably only enough for a new R1 for me and say a FXR150 for each of my 3 boys (Sorry jrandom I couldn't resist :2thumbsup )

One thing that does piss me off is the assumption that if someone has something expensive then they are a "rich cunt".
You don't know what Matt or I do for a living, how hard we work, or what sacrifices were made to buy these bikes. Perhaps we forwent drinking with mates, holidays, took on two jobs, never went out etc.
Perhaps we saved every spare cent we had for years. Does that make us rich cunts because we achieved a goal others are to selfish to delay immediate pleasure in orderv to obtain.
I don't go around calling every one with a less expensive bike a cheap bastard because they didn't spend as much as me. I invested in an education so I could earn enough money to achieve some of my goals in life.
If you have different choices, priorities or responsibilities it is not my fault. :argh:

Not that I intend to (or not yet anyway) but if I go on the dole I could have a pretty sweet life as far biker bum goes. I own a bike that owes me around $3k.
The thing with 250's is that they are soo cheap to run. eg it cost me $15 to go from the North Shore up to Whakapapa.
So being a future temp dole bludger, I could have a pretty sweet life clocking up the miles courtesy of taxes from people who work.
Anybody care to join me on my quest to live the life of a biker bum!

Well, don't be pissed off, I *don't* think you're a 'rich cunt'. And even if you were you'd be excused for your good taste in bikes.
Ye gods but irony is hard to convey online :o

at this point I could say 'no worries dude' but then this thread would become *far* too icky and polite for a proper motorcycling forum :D
