An idea for the protest rides

I know that there is discussion about rides to Wellington, and regional rides, debate about weekends, versus week days.....

Well, I had an idea, hopefully an original one, but given it just hit me, and I'm at work, I can't read all the threads.

Drawing off a combination of my experience with the cheese cutter ride in Auckland, and the Trucky blockade a while back, I think,,,,,,,,

Getting as many bikes as possible, on all the main routes into each of the major centres, starting at the end of the motorways at about 7:30 on a Friday morning, have all the bikes depart at the same time, doing 20kph into the city.

This would absolutely choke the motorways, get crap loads of coverage, and demonstrate the impact on the roading system if evey bike rider instantly switched to cages.

Add to this, when the Trucky's did it, they had heaps of cagers supporting their cause, albeit too little too late, but for us, we're not too late.

Whilst the idea of creating massive disruption is tempting, the reality is that we need cagers etc ON our side. If we piss them off, we are on our own. If there was a way to include cagers in such a move then...well and good. Doubt that's possible tho.

Perhaps we save this idea for when the changes are final and we are already screwed.

The Truck drivers one only pissed people off because they stopped. Otherwise, because it was so well publicised leading up to it, disruption was minimal (well at least planned for), and the community supported the truck drivers possition and action.

On the other hand, IMO, the cheese cutter one got on the news and stuff, after the fact, but not much before the fact, therefore impact was less.

Heaps of hype before, a bit of disruption, a bit of headline grabbing (get the dude that created ACC in a sidecar), and all good.

Otherwise, it will be "look at all the bikes mum, what are they doing?" "Dunno, just bein a pain in the arse like normal"

Any protest is going to upset some. The trick is to upset as few as possible.

There is a place for mass disruption but on this issue it is far too soon.

Yeah, so far everyone I've spoken to (bikers/cagers/whatever) have pretty much had the same opinion on the proposed levys. I know I'd like to keep it that way.
