Hey guys and girls thought I better make a post for once instead of just reading and also have a few question.

Anyway I am 31 and have ridden dirt bikes since I was about 10 years old never ridden road bikes so pretty noob in that department.
I have been looking at road bikes for a couple of months and am going for my license on Sunday.

I am really interested in a 250 sports bike I have had a good look into what option I have and have changed my mind many times.

I was first interested in a il4 cbr or zxr but TBH for the price I would rather go new for a couple grand more I know the old bikes are a lot faster then the new 250s but for the price difference I would rather go new with a warranty as well.

Of coarse my main choices are a ninja 250 or a gt250r.
I am 6'1 and 95kg after sitting on a 09 ninja I felt pretty cramped up so the hyosung being full sized appealed to me more and after talking to my local mechanic who has been working on bikes for years says the gt250r are pretty good bikes he was 4 local ones he has serviced since new one has 50000km on the clock and no issues.

hes not a bike dealer either so no biased bull shit from him.
So I am looking at a new 09 gt250r there on run out sale atm for $6995 +orc
which is pretty cheap of coarse until i get my license and test ride one I will not be certain if its the bike for me.

My one concern is how better the new injected models will be I also like the new tail on the 2010.
I am worried that with the injected models coming out it may drop the older models value a lot more.
And how much better performance are the injected going to be.

I wouls also like to hear from anyone who has a 08-09 gt250 and who there experience has been with there bike.

I work with someone who bought the naked version new. She's had a few niggly issues but nothing major to be honest. From what I read they can be a bit hit or miss - but I'm sure you can read as well as me so I'll let you be the judge of that.

The Honda VTR250 has very nice reviews but is a bit more pricey. Mighty good looking too.

I have been interested in the VTRs anyone know the RRP on them?

My advice is to buy a simple, neutral riding position machine, like a cb250, (not a gn or any sort of feet forward thing, no offence to anyone) and do your time / learn road craft. The scorpio 225 is a good bike if you want to go new. Spend the money on better bike once you've got your full licence.

Yer I know what your saying man and too the other poster did forget to mention that I had been looking at vtr250s as 99-2004.

I am wanting a bike for more then commuting to work I also live rural with a 15 minute open ride to work.
And really want to go out of town on decent ride once I feel ready.

So for the lower end prices a older vtr250 would appeal to me more.

I ma going to be on a 250 for the next year i want bike thats nice to ride and I am not going to be bored of in 2 months if that makes since.

I owned a Hyo 250R to do the learning and restricted license phase a few years back (07 model).

It was a good bike, no mechanical problems for the 5000km I put on it, not that you'd expect any on a new bike. Although if I were buying now I guarantee it would be the new ninja, as since i'm a short bastard (5ft 6) I think I would have preferred a slightly lower ride height to learn on. Can't add any comments on the fuel injection, but the new colour schemes are pretty good looking... I just had the plain old black.

hi there another whakatane rider. I have just brought a new gt250s and am 6ft tall and the bike fits perfectly i also brought new for the warranty. I did alot of research before i brought my bike and talked to a few owners and riders that had upgraded after getting there full and the hyosungs all though they get a bashing on here ain't that bad. My advice is just go to a dealer and try a few bikes and buy the 1 that fits you best.

Why don't you apply for an exemption ... with your height , it should not be an issue.

The hyos are good fun. We have four of them - 250 Comet, 650 Comet, GT250R, GT650R. Haha shit thats one of each!

Don't discount the 250 Hyo Comet. They are really great learner bikes - so easy to ride and lots of fun. Not quite the looker of its GT250R cousin, but it makes up for that in other ways.

You really need to spend a good hour on each of them to see what they are like.

Hi Dirty Heathen and welcome to KB.....

I have a yellow GT250R. If you see me around stop for a chat... I won't bite, promise ;)

I just got back from a trip to New Plymouth on my bike. It stopped 3 times on the way down and was a pig on the way back. I think it has fuel tank venting problems. I knew it would start again almost immediately, but it was a bit spooky being parked on the side of the road in the middle of the night all by my little self! I don't have any issues with it for commuting locally. I'm 15 minutes out of Whakatane and ride into town a fair bit on it. It's great on fuel, doing about 350-400k's on a 17litre tank of gas.

All the best with the bike hunt :niceone: and there really is nothing like having a good ride or at least a sit on a bike to see if that's what you are after...

dunno if i'd go out and spend a whole lot on a new hyo that will plummet in price (relatively) as soon as you drive it off the yard. I'm 6'2" and about 110kg on a good day and i had similar issues when i was looking. I was also keen on the hyo's (2nd hand) but after talking to a few people including some of the dealers i decided it was too risky. enough people had negative things to say about them that it put me off. the later models may be better but the added cost isn't worth it.

i sat on a bandit, hornet, vtr and a xelvis. xelvis felt great but i thought it was ugly as sin. vtr was a bit small. hornet was my favourite - not the most comfortable but ticked enough boxes. almost had one of these locked in but the deal fell through. I ended up getting a bandit which is a great size, very comfy and enough gas to keep me happy until i get my full. i didnt break the bank (3800) and i should be able to recoup most of that when i sell it.

If you are a tall dude - seriously look at 250 Trail bikes.

They have better tall ergos, are potentially more fun and can be turned into a motard.

If you don't fit it due to size, you can get an endorsement/exemption from the POLICE.

......... go get a 1000cc :woohoo:

You are 6'1" and 95Kg, 31 years old and heaps of dirtbike experience.

My oldest son is 6'2" and 75Kg, was 18 years old and had dirtbike experience since small. I put him on a GN250, took a pic, then I put him on a NV400 and took a pic. We submitted a request for expemption based on his size and also as he worked late at the bar, an exemption at same time for riding later than the Restricted allowed. We included information re his dirt bike riding and had a couple of referees. NOTE: He had already completed his Learners and done the training.

He got his exemption and was allowed to ride the NV400, also to and from work outside the Restricted limitations.

I know I will get shot down here by the saefty brigade. I am not suggesting an exemption is for everyone. But for smeone that clearly knows how to ride a bike and (I suspect) already has a car license and been on the road for many years, it is a nobrainer.

You can go up to 600cc. There is somewhere a list of bikes you can not get an exemption for.

Your call.

Good Luck!

He is right. Those other bikes will be very cramped for you for any distance.
You could look at something like a KLX250 but the seat aint so good for distance. Or a TTR etc. Performance wise you wont notice to much difference around town. but its down to what pushes your buttons at the end of the day.
