Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a new bike but I'm not sure whether to get it or not because of the potential crash damage it may have already suffered to the frame. The reason I suspect this is because the bike used to have bent forks which have now been repaired, and the bike also needs a cert. then reregistration. It's cheap and I really want to get it, but do you think it's worth the risk?

Any potentional damage to the frame will have weakened the bike structure ... its a risk ... and not one I would be willing to take.

You can pay money to have the geometry confirmed as AOK or screwed.

So far as weakness goes, it depends upon the metal type and where it is on the bike. Some metals just snap or stay strong, whereas others just weaken. I'd worry more about the integrity of the existing weld joints. The Geometry guy will be able to give you some good advice.

I'd walk away from it. If it was that easy to re-certify then why hasn't the seller done it?

Get the seller to re-vin it for you, then consider buying it. The costs associated with getting it tested and then repaired before being able to get plates may possibly make your really cheap bike a very, very expensive one.

Find something else

Never, ever buy someone else's unfinished "project". It is either 100% suited to the purpose you intend it for or it is not worth your time and money.
