View Full Version : Revenge of the Plastic Bag!

On my way home over the motorway tonight I ran over a plastic bag. Less than 100metres up the road my bike came to a grinding halt right in the middle of the fast lane. Like any good racer I instantly rose my hand which may have got the attention of the guy behind me who stopped with about 30cm's to spare. I actually think it was the handstand that I was pulling while trying to stay on the bike hat really got his attention...

After checking the bike over I noticed that the plastic bag had tightly wrapped itself around my sprocket and chain. Once I removed the bag the bike seemed to go fine and I got home in one peice.

Let this serve as a warning to all!

we had a gentleman do that with his badly stowed plastic wet weather trousers - sadly the result added to ACC's stats

I would strongly recommend avoiding any plastic bag (assuming you can) that blows across your path

Plastic bags are evil and are out to get us all y'know...it's all part of National's plot to get rid of bikers y'know...I can tell y'know...the voices told me in the middle of the night y'know....when I took off me foil helmet y'know...

They can be bloody slippery too. But don't ask me about that.

Well I dont really call that last incident a bin more like an 'Attack of the Cager' incident. Namely a Hit and Run.

Anything I can do to raise your ACC levies!

Nice save :2thumbsup:

Reminds me of when I was a teenager riding along on one wheel. Up ahead I saw a drink can and thought if I could smash it with the front it would demonstrate my awesomeness. I lined it up and hit it perfectly. My self adulation was over in about half a second when I suddenly found my self on the gound in a heap wondering wtf had just happened. Turned out the can, which btw was casually minding it's business, took umbridge to my rough treatment. I'd hit it so squarely that the ends clamped onto the front tyre. One half revolution later it was jammed in the forks and I was destined to make close acquaintance with Mr Tarmac :o

Lesson learnt: Don't assume that just because the other dude's smaller than you that he won't turn around and kick your arse. Steer clear of loitering cans...and shopping bags!

Yes correct, apologies - did they catch the a-hole that hit you?

Well I tirelessly walked the streets of Wellington looking for a white hatch back that hit me. Unfortunately the real one would not stand up!

So that would be a no.... :(

That's the whole thing; you shouldn't ride on the path. Duh.

Yeah plastic bags can be serious. I was driving on open road one night (it's ok I had the racebike in the back) & I ran over this sheet of plastic or fertiliser bag or whatever, no drama, wasnt going to swerve int eh van just for that.

hen I notice the water temp going up up UP. It had sucked itself up totally over the radiator. Glad I saw that before it blew!

Cripes Hels! Glad you survived that one! Could've been nasty eh! I had my suspicions plastic bags were evil in more ways than one!! Another reason to ban them!!!

I am glad that you posted this. I have received alot of 'unbelieving' looks and comments such as "are you sure that it was the plastic bag"... Those bloody things may be thin and slinky but they sure are durable!!

I *am* very lucky. Just not sure if that's a good or a bad thing! ;)

And sheepskins! I had one on my bike seat once for a long trip but when I stood up a little to release a rather large fart the sheepskin must have seen what was about to happen and launched itself off the side and wrapped itself around my chain and rear sprocket. I was lucky to keep the bike upright and not to have done any real damage. The thought that I could have been killed because of a fart fills me with ... something ... I don't know what.

Riding into town this morning and lying across the other lane was a back board off a trailer... bolts were further up the road!

Then in town, in the middle of the roundabout was a bundle of glossy magazines!! I managed to avoid them with the front tyre but the bike did a nice dance as the rear went over them...

I've seen a plastic bag covering the front of a radiator before too.

Good work Str8 Jacket staying on... did you talk to the fulla about his following distance? I guess it was good that he stopped but that's mighty close for comfort!

Yes, I thanked him very much for being alert and stopping without running me over. We were doing a bit over the speed limit and I stopped dead so I was very lucky. My life did kind of 'flash before my eyes' for a moment though!
