View Full Version : Back to the south island

Well as some of you know last year i went down the south island, this was following an offer from Subike on KB to work the vineyards with him, there is something very alluring about the south island, once again the rat race in auckland and the lack of jobs up here is growing tiresome.
It is far from pruning season but i am tempted to head back down there.
A little more set up this time, last time i went to the south island with nothing but a bag and $70 to my name, i came back with an experiance i will never forget and meeting some bloodey good people along the way... and the katana came back to, this time it would be a drive down, probably live in my trusty toyota corona for a week or so until i got on my feet down there...
Can anybody reccomend good suburbs in chch, not complete upper class but more a family type area, where you can walk down the street at 3am without getting mugged by skinheads lol, either that or i will live up in amberly and work the vineyards etc year round
It's all up in the air at the moment, with my sisters wedding at the start of next year and my beloved project car would have to be sold.
what can i say i guess i cant sit still for long...

Its safe to walk our streets at 3am as long as you dont have an attitude. Come down and sign up with a temp agency - plenty of work on offer. Good luck if you come down again.

Yeah i'm one of those people that has that victim look to them apparently, been in a few streets fights up here in auckland, but also be good to have a safe area where i dont have to worry about coming home to a cleaned out house and garage etc....
yeah i'll do a bit of a job hunt before i come down, what do the temps get down to overnight in summer, last year i was only down for winter
Cheers: Mark

Ask Subike he was the one you gained the experience from. Get over your differences. Listen to his advice grasshopper
:jerry: If you did you wouldn't be heading back down in a faaarkin cage.

We get some nice warm nights over summer, lots to do and heaps of other bikers to catch up with. Lots of good quiet family type areas to live in. Depending on where you end up working.

South Island is awful Mark - you'll hate it. Rains all the time. Skinheads will mug you any time of day or night.
Please please please remain somewhere north of Wellington.
Ta.
Signed....entire population of the South Island.

Maybe you should report that Mark. Wouldn't want someone breaking the rules, would we. Might end up with a slap from the big bad moderators. Tell ya what, PM Mental T and SpankMe about this massive infringement. I have a funny feeling they tell you to get fucked.
But hey, can't have the rules being broken.
Edit: I don't have mad skillz brah, that's fairly obvious by now to all. Thanks for the propz tho

Amberley is not a bad place to live... I grew up there mind you that was a few years ago now and most of those vineyards were farms...
if you want to go into Chch I myself prefer the eastern side of town, sth brighton, new brighton, north beach, parklands, bexley, maurieha, avondale areas

Definitely get an alarm set up for your flat and get contents insurance if/when you move down here... far too many burglaries here lately. Also not a good idea to be out at 3am. Generally speaking the further away the suburb is from the inner city, the better it is.

Yeah, the Dover departure was shortly after I signed up. (Not MY fault, I hope...) Good banter there on occasion.

Take the bike, cars suck.
You can live in a pup tent for three weeks if you try.
Me and the missus are fucking off Xmas day with nothing more than wets, a fart sack, tent and clean gruns. Harden up. CAR? Jeez Wayne.
The best way to see how ya cope is to leave home with next to nothing.

Bollox.I've lived in Sydenham and Linwood most of my 38 years and NEVER had a break in whatsoever, yet I have friends in South Brighton,Shirley and Sumner that have.
I speak from experience. The cops weren't surprised when I made my report and even went on to make a comment "oh another one". One month later someone living a few units away came knocking on my door to ask if I saw or heard any suspicious activities, his window was broken and his stuff nicked. And let's not forgot the "mysterious" house fires. Two houses burnt up overnight near where me not too long ago. All in the 6 months I've been here.
When I lived in Sumner my neighbours would often leave their doors opened when they head to the village centre to buy groceries. My bike is parked right in the front lawn or sometimes on the road and thoughts of it being nicked never come across my mind. Maybe we were lucky then. Here, I always chain my scoot down. The thieves here aren't just opportunistic, they will come prepared with tools for the job.
