View Full Version : Can a not quite legal bike race at the Nats?

Hypothetical question which I have also asked MNZ, awaiting their reply too.
So I'm wondering if someone was to enter just 1 or 2 of the Nats events with a bike that isn't legal spec wise, would they be told "sorry you can't race!"
Not talking the latest spec bike but an 06 bike, that may have a slipper clutch added or perhaps aftermarket wheels for eg.
Do you think it would be fairer if they raced but got no championship points perhaps? Wouldn't want to interfere with another competitors National campaign.
There must be a few bikes in this situation and would be a shame if they couldn't compete given the low entry #'s from last year.

Personally I don't reckon there should be a problem if no points can be scored...However, if you take out another bike that is in the running I'm sure they would have a different oppinion on whether you should have been there in the first place!:jerry:

rules are rules...
in this case, other riders are spending thousands of $$$$.. they will be pissed off, if another rider turns up on a bike that should not be in their class, races, beats them,(or gets in the way...) and then says.. oh don't worry about my points.....
personal, in the national rounds... if not legal.. no race . end of story

Judt race the fucken thing T. It's only an issue if you get protested.
Fuck the rules, they should be thankful there's one extra competitor on the grid.

I hear ya mate, do they have scrutineering at the Nats though?
Just dreaming here, but if someone turns up with say for eg, carbon rims, would they even make it on to the track? Would be a shame to have paid and then get turned away.
Who's the right MNZ person to talk to? Being there's no Road race commisioner, that and MNZ's site isn't even working at the mo.

Email Paul Stewart and Jim Tuckerman, they'll be able to advise.
However, quite why you'd wanna spend money on Carbon Rims is beyond me.

Dude as much as it sounds great and the intentions are honourable Ive seen it a few times before. Before you even get to the dummy someones using that deadly word PROTEST.It gets whispered round the pits then you get a quiet talking to that "someone" has complained so you can't go out with your "cheat" bits or an official protest will be lodged.
Sorry man just a case of been there seen that (done to others)
Re scutineering--the answer is it depends on the club running the event--Teratonga in 07 no -Ruapuna/Levels/Pukie yes
IN MY OPINION ---- MNZ view open SP as the premier class that all aspire to. So the last thing they want is for someone to be out on a faster bike than Stroudy and co.
Regardless of if they are or aren't taking points what the spectators live or on tv see is who crosses the line first.

Unless bike is given special permission to Race, it CANNOT be raced in National classes if it is out side of the rules! Simple, the rules are there for all people

I know, seen it myself.
What I'm saying is, if you get protested and lose your points, but knew it was going to happen and simply don't give a toss, what's the problem?

Sorry man Ill try again-What Im saying is youll pay ya $300 and be told you can't go on track. Heck of a waste of resources if they aren't running some sort of clubie class which they don't have to do if the program doesn't allow it.
Think of it from the POV of the teams that spent tens of thousands getting a bike out there. They have sponsors wanting their value for money and someone goes out and on the day beats em across the line.

Clubmans quite often doesn't run at the Nationals as it isn't a "National class", it's up to the individual cubs what they run as support classes

So what's up with Pete Tanner running his Aprilia at the Manfeild Nat's last year? He's got Ohlins forks strapped on it which must make it a Factory (R) version and therefore illegal.
Realistically, if you stick with the stock rims who would know you had a slipper bolted in anyway........?

I was reading section 13 of the Superbike rules regarding 'Special Invitation', is this only for pre '98 bikes or any bike?
Can anyone explain what this means please?
13 Other motorcycles that are Eligible.
Any Homologated motorcycle pre 1998. The rules are open for these machines.
In special cases an invitation may be issued to a motorcycle to compete in this class upon
request, there will be no entry fee for this special invitation, points and prize money will not
apply.

Its for special people on special bikes , EG a WSB rider on a missile or a guest appearance by the Brittan or summit.

You wouldnt be the first guy to run an illegal bike. I recall the '86 Nats where two top riders were disqualified for running 6 speed 750 gearboxes in their "production" GSXR1100's

Have you ever ridden a bike with wheels on it that are significantly lighter and stiffer than stock?

Would be a waste of his talent mate, unfortunately for most of us the bugger is no mug on a bike, as proven at club level. Be great to see him mixing it up on the National stage.
