View Full Version : Protest flags

I have offered to supply flags to those who want one, at cost. Eventual numbers will determine that cost, but they will be under $100 each plus courier.
The flag itself will be 1000x500mm, this design (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2041&pictureid=33159) on both sides.
They will be made with a pocket sewn down one end, to slip over a pole (you supply that) that you can slip into your packrack frame. I have done this before and it works well. A bit of tape around the bottom of the flap to keep it from slipping up the pole when moving, and another to ensure the pole doesn't come out of the pack frame, and you're good to go.
I suggest that each region clubs together to get one , but of course anyone can get their own. If you want your region added to the flag, no problem, but a small extra cost will apply.
'Someone' is supposed to be setting up a war chest account for donations to be collected. Flags can be paid for from that. Or I will supply an account via PM to individuals who order one.
EDIT:- I will need orders by Monday 2/11 to give me time. I have to get in (a lot of) various materials before I can even start making them.

Brilliant! :Punk:

I think the idea of regions clubbing together to get one is great - 10 people each throw $10 in the hat and you have yourself a flag!

We have been doing a wee bit of fund raising in Auckland and have made at least $100 so far - we will be ordering a flag just as soon as we get our accounting system sorted out!

If you are a Regional Coordinator and would like fund raising ideas please send me a PM and I will give you a few ideas. Also share your own fund raising success with other Regional Coordinators in the coordination social group (PM Ixion for an invitation).

mstrs, how much would a smaller one cost? i bought a couple of nz car window flags from work. the poles fit the top box lip nicely. im keeping the one flag as nz, but would like an acc specific one of the other side. what design are the regional flags going to have on them?
27cm tall and about 43cm wide, including envelope for pole.

Hear what you are saying, but I do not want to get into the whole "I need this/that/other size" thing. I have enough to do without juggling that sort of thing.
Sorry

Sunhuntin, small flags might be easy enough to make for ourselves. I have just been to my local fabric shop and purchased hi-viz fluoro yellow fabric for $9/metre.

I might try sewing a chopper-guard style flag and using a black marker pen to write "easy target" on it.

If the prototype works I could sell them to others and/or send them the recipe. What do you reckon?

that could work. i was going to just print out a poster and staple it on or something, but then it wouldnt react properly in the wind etc.

never though of fluoro stuff. hell, i might even be able to cut up a cheap fluoro vest from the op shop and write on that with a vivid. but i will hit the fabric shop once ive been paid.

One of the issues we're likely to face is ink-bleed through the fabric. My fluoro vest fabric isn't thick enough to prevent it. How about we both do our experiments and post our findings here for the use of others. :D

Some 'puter person might know, but I think you can buy transfers that you print in the inkjet then iron onto shirts and stuff...

Might be good for little flags..

The rangitiririratanatiratans-rians have em hanging off everything.. I gotta get one for the ute, and the work van, and the wifes car

AFAIK, you can get that stuff at Warehouse Stationery...used to be able to, anyway.

I like that idea.

That image in the first post would be the perfect design for a bumper sticker I say.

I have room on my tail for one and those that don't could put it on a backpack or on the back of their jacket maybe?

Sorry to sidetrack thread.

I have used those before. Unfortunately you have to use a really hot iron to melt the plasticy-type transfer onto the fabric. The fabric I have is nylon so I would end up with a very messy iron and a puddle of fluoro gloop.

The 1000 x 500mm flag will be too big for a backpack or jacket and cost $100.

My suggestion for backpacks and jackets is a yellow fluoro vest where you write your own slogan on the back using a thick black marker pen. The vest fabric is thin enough that you could print out a slogan and trace it on then colour it in (kids are useful for that!)

hmmmm, never thought of bleed through the material... it would look backwards.

*puts thinking cap on*

maybe black duct tape? or black materical sewn on?

I meant use that image and make something like 100 x 50mm stickers aswell. Would be rather cheap I'd say.

Come to think of it, vest would be smarter, promoting safety at the same time

Find some Asian printers, pretty sure they have no idea what the word copyright means.

MSTRS, PM me if you need a pdf file made especially for your flag.

And that would be necessary, why? The original is in the format I need to produce, and the image on here is just a reduced jpg of that.

Sweet as.

Wasn't trying to suggest that you'd make a poor quality version (or that you needed my help). I have the original .ai file, so its easy for me to make different versions.

Thanks StoneY. I will be doing both - flag and vest. And arm band. And T-shirt. And pack cover. I will look like a fluoro yellow flailing octopus with epilepsy as I ride down the street.

But at least they can't claim they didn't see me. :D

Now, if I'd known that yesterday...
I had to trace one of the pdf's to get an image I can use (need vector based, you see). Tis done now, tho, and I can do all the manipulating etc I want

I don't have any orders for flags yet. I'm not making them if no-one's buying.
I can offer either cloth or a light pvc banner material.
The pvc has the advantage of being able to peel off the lettering and replace with something else, meaning that type will be good for other purposes. Price should be the same for either.

Fold material in half to what ever shape. For wording you can buy black "bias binding"all widths. Just sew on to make words. Then fold material back over to cover stitching.Fluro jacket great idea, you can buy cheap ones from Warehouse saddlery. Then add what you want.
