Time has come, I've been wipped, so I'm selling my 950 S. Baby has taken over life so no pillion anymore and not going to get away from home a for weekend long trips for a good while so selling the 950 for a 450EXC.

Will put the TM ad up this weekend but if you know anybody who is interested in the fastest 950 of them all, a blue one, get in touch. Will be the cheapest 950 on the market at the moment.

Swap it for a DR650 and Gilera Nordwest.

Most shit rear tyre ever used award goes to Metzler Karoo! Shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit on the gravel, just downright crap! Oh and they wear badly too!!! Wasted $300.00

My last mitas was twice the tyre and a fraction of the price!

I feel a 6th gear burning of the metzler will be coming!

Who has a good video camera and a chunk of concrete!

They are actually not that hard to ride reasonably fast in that sort of stuff, they feel just like a biggish trail bike (not surprisingly I suppose 'cause that's what they are) and you can get quite confident. The problem is that the consequences of a mistake are major...

Yep, have had one in the past.....I guess what I was trying to say was given the tightness of the trail, it would have been a pretty awful frikkin mess if he had coaught a log or two with the pegs of missed the braking.....Still, the camera was good as well. I gotta get me one of those HDPro wide angles.....nice. You notice that on the vid, his helmet never moved...lol

The R's longer legs would help with the ground clearance.

I found this link today http://www.mikescyclektm.com/pf/2004/4-str/c950-Adventure_950-Aventure-S.PDF

It's a PDF of the official 2004 KTM 950 Adventure Spare Parts Manual. Essentially it's like a Fische with exploded diagrams of everything on the bike, with KTM part numbers.

Warning for those on dialup or small data allowances, it's 15mb so takes a while to download.

For those with other KTM's, the security on their website is crap and you can find a pile of other KTM pdf's here: http://www.mikescyclektm.com/pf/2004/4-str/
Or there's a tool to find them all here: http://www.mikescyclektm.com/

For online fische searching Cycle Hutt KTM in the good ole US of A have an online system for looking up parts: http://cyclehuttktm.com/FicheFinderOld/Default.aspx

I've not bothered looking but there should be a an engine parts manual as well. The one you linked too is the chassis manual only. I got both in the satchel that came with my bike. The good thing is that there is generally common spec info included as well i.e. bearing sizes, bolt diameters and thread pitch etc. Unfortunately this is not complete i.e. clutch slave cylinder O rings for example (that example is not a big deal though).

Also be careful using the parts numbers for older bikes as when upgraded parts come out they get a new parts number i.e. clutch slave cylinder etc. As I understand the dealerships system knows that a part is superseded and will supply an updated part but I'm not sure if all of the on line systems do this.

Thanks, it looks like Northern accesories are the NZ distributor for Uni.

My local dealer tried to get price and availability details out of Northern Accessories to supply a 950 pre-filter but apparently Northern seemed pretty much unaware they even sold Uni products, despite Uni being listed on the Northern website.

I've just tried to order one direct from Uni Australia, $40Aus including delivery. I think the order worked but their secure payment system closed the site browser window on completion so I didn't get a confirmation that all was good. I've emailed Uni to check whether it went through OK.

I also just picked up a new factory filter this morning so when the pre filter arrives I'll open the girl and put both in.

What's the factory filter worth? Is it better to get a DNA reusable filter (K&N in disguise) - about $250 (I think) though.

Factory filter is $70NZ, bloody good I thought given the size and design of the thing. Mine was ex stock Auckland so took 2 days to get here.

The Uni pre-filter is washable / reusable same as K&N etc, and much easier to get to than the main filter.

The only downside is you loose about 15cm of fording depth, which on a 950 still means you should be able to go about crotch deep.

Its not rocket science, but a good 2 into 1 system will shed 8kgs from up under the seat, improve fuel range considerably, reduce the engines heat retention via the cats removal and produce a magnificant sound without bugging the neighbours.

Ok, I understand the weight loss, that makes sense. My factory pipes are de catted so I've already got some weight loss there and the associated heat reduction, but one of those pipes still weighs more than both the FMF's together.

As to the fuel range, is there a gain from going to one pipe or are you referring to the ability to mount a 2nd tank where the pipe once was for greater fuel capacity?

yep the two into one allows the fitting of aux tank in place of the lost muffler

I'm aware it allows the fitment of the Neduro tank but the question was whether it's that that DJ is referring to or whether changing the pipe configuration changes the bikes economy in some way.

I'm no rocket scientist alright so its little wonder I'm a bit confused buy the above reasoning as the best $900.00 to spend on ya big Katoom....

The heat/noise reasons can be acheived regardless of twin or single pipes

If you take the $900.00 for the pipe convert, then add say another hummm I dunno...say $800.00 to $1000.00 for a new tank the cost benefit is not such an advantage? add in the addtional fuel & tank weight, then the weight advantage lessons.

The "considerable increase in fuel range" is a bit curious ? If your not refering to the ability to fit an extra tank then in most cases less fuel consumption generally equates to a reduction in performance/power?

Still looks like a personal coice decision to me. If this is fuel capacity debate why not buy a safrai tank they hold more than the small rear ender don't they?

There is absolutly NO good reason to fit the highly expensive aux fuel tank to any 990 here.
No, I was not referring to being able to carry more fuel, more the fact that my 990's consumption went from its regular 16/17km/L with factory cans to a credable 19-20km/L while still running the stock EMS mapping( the Akro maps destroy any chance of going far on a fuel load and contribute nothing worthwhile to the bikes overall performance).
I do realise the 'mana' that goes ( along with the majestic expense) with having twin 'akra's' and where that places one in the standing of their peers, so don't worry anyone in disagreement with me - I have been in this scene long enough to know the correct relationship between form and function for the average motorcyclist!!
:niceone:
And, its often a long and expensive road to find just what works best.

Eddieb

Thanks DJ, thats what I was after, and it's very interesting for me as I'd like a bit more distance per refuel, but didn't really want to fit an extra tank. Another 50 km would be nice and 2km/litre is close on that.

So you fitted a 2 into 1 Y piece, using one factory pipe, or one after market pipe?

I have a 950 so the same rules may or may not apply with the carbs, I don't know if the 990 computer does any sort of intelligent remapping based on the pipes/backpressure/whatever.

My 950 came with a set of black FMF's and a set of decatted factory pipes. Since getting the bike I have mostly run the FMF's but recently I refitted the factory pipes. While the FMF's gave a noticable improvement in response I got sick of the noise, especially when going through quiet villages and around town.
On my first distance trip after refitting the stock pipes I got about 20km more before the light came on, and on one tank got 304kms to the light, the first over 300 ever.

If fitting a 2 into 1 Y piece alone can give an economy increase, without needing outlay on a new pipe as well then that gives an option worth more investigation.

My airfilter is also pretty dirty so I have a new factory filter and a Uni pre filter to fit when I get some time, hopefully that will make some difference as well.

You can order a replacement set of points for them. Screw the facet's its a shit load of pissing around and no real benefit. We fitted new points to a bunch of ours and for the cost it doesn't matter if you can change the points ever 20k and still be way cheaper than buying a Facet.

Geeze Eddie, you're the first guy to ever be interested in anything I ever mentioned on KB!!!:bleh:

I am sure that carbs will not respond the same to free flowing, in fact I am quite sure that they will gobble more juice than a 'restricted' system.
Really, my stand on one can versus 2 was only tongue in cheek....a chuck it out there and see who bites kinda fishing trip?( thou I do firmly stand by the Akra comment....incidently, pronounced R-crap-O-vik....yeah...REALLY!)
Carb systems rely on some( the correct amount) of back pressure to suit their jetting and timing. Take away too much restriction and fuel will 'hose' thru the system and be wasted, just because of the increased flow. The electronic injection system has a lambda sensor that measures O2 in the exhaust to ensure the mixture never gets too lean or rich but otherwise will not change things unless a differant map has been installed to instruct the EMS to do so.
I really could not make any reccomendation either way re 1 v 2 cans for your bike Ed, however, if you want just a small range increase, go to Nomad tanks site, theyre in Oz and make very reasonably priced aux rear saddle tanks.

Oh, silly,silly me

I think my analysis of the free flow effect of exhaust changes on fuel consumption are just a little flawed( I will get in before someone 'pedantic' does!)......my beliefs are based more on the 2 stroke system that will be more strongly affected by freeing up the exhaust than will a 4 stroke. The degree of which a 4 stroke will be affected will be determined by valve overlap I guess and this is not an area I can comment on re 990 motors.

So, what I should have written in reply to Eddie about my increased fuel economy when I fitted my 2 into 1........................

The use of the quotation marks on the word pedantic is incorrect.
The context suggest that the quotation marks are being used incorrectly for emphasis, however the situation indicated in the text incorrectly indicates an ironic usage - as if the person in question (in this case me) would actually not be pedantic when pointing out your error. In actual fact, that person would be a pedantic bastard of the highest order by pointing out this error.

been talking to a few ktm owners on adv...

they been replacing there factory pumps with a low PSI facet 12v pumps with success.
with a price tag for a factory pump of $300 and 3-4 weeks to deliver from Austria...
im going to have a go at this option.
iv found a pump in NZ that matches the specs of the one the adv guys are using.
paid for it tonight $68 and should see it Tuesday..
going to take out old pump at weekend.

Here,s the basic specs for the pump om my africa ,,,Facet Cube Style 12 Volt Fuel Pump, 3 to 4.5 max psi
Maximum fuel delivery 30 gallons per hour at free-flow. Maximum pressure 3 to 4.5 psi. Typical flow 15 gph at 2 psi. 1/8 NPT female ports. Ground wire allows easy installation in positive-ground applications (most Facet pumps ground through the pump body).

For low fuel requirements on engines up to about 150 horsepower, a single Solid State pump such as this one is usually sufficient. Pumps can be combined in series or parallel to achieve higher pressures or flows. We also offer several other models with different flow rates and pressures for engines up to about 150 horsepower. Facet fuel pumps have low power requirements (about 1 amp at 12 volts) and operate without troublesome seals or diaphragms
The pump number is a facet 40105 and that number is the part number found by the mounting holes, not the 574a number on the body ....:msn-wink:

Why not just replace the points and know its going to work correctly? I really do not see why everyone rushes out and replaces the pump when the points are easier to do and even tho they wear its not like you need to replaced them every year. just my 2 cents.

yes your comments are not falling on death ears...

my auto electrical mate dave and i have run some test on the pump tonight, pumping fuel from one container to an other,, the pump is jamming up or failing,, best run we got was 3 mins..other times would run then stop..start again and stop...

the points are fine, and working as they should, minor pitting and minimal wear marks on ether side of the points

dave says possible magnet damage or moisture in side the pump part causing the failing...i dont know im not an auto electrician.

looking back in my bikes service history, the fuel pump was replaced at around 17,000km. reason was motor corrosion.................if the pump in there now has done around 48,000km that cant be to bad a innings aye...

Had some garage time today and installed my new air filter and Uni prefilter, plus new exhaust gaskets at the mufflers as my bike didn't have any, and rotated the fork legs so I can get at the breather screws.

Here's the old and new filters side by side, it should breathe a bit better now ;) Just idling and reving it in the garage sounds like the Uni prefilter gives the bike a bit of induction noise that wasn't there before.

219611219610

After rotating the fork leg I opened the breather screw and got lots of pssssffftt. I was surprised by how much actually, there must have been a fair bit of air pressure in there.

I only got 180km! to the red light out of my last tank on the 950 and I wasn't even fanging it, ~90km of commuting in slow traffic and ~90km 2 up motorway riding, which apart from one spirited pass was very sedate. At the gas station 18.5 litres went in after ~10km of the red light going.

Whats up with that?

This is the 2nd tank of gas since the fitting of a new factory air filter and and Uni pre-filter, and fitting of new exhaust gaskets at the mufflers as there weren't any fitted and the join was leaking slightly.
Given how filthy the factory filter was the bike should be running way leaner not richer.

I've never got below 250km before, which I got on the first tank after making the changes above.

So why the sudden change in economy?

But they're all in Europe so don't count as it's "home turf".

We're not counting all the Japanese extreme enduros so we shouldn't be able to count them either.

:innocent:

Wonder how KTM have gone at the Paris - Dacre?

There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

Cheap power commander for a 990 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=327047443)

So the end result of this was that fitting a pre filter caused more airflow restriction that I realised it would, and that I need to do my homework more before doing stuff I know bugger all about. (Remind me of that again after the next thing I do to it)

The bike is now back to standard as far as air intake goes with the new factory air filter fitted and I'm happy to say that a tank of general open road use at legal speeds or thereabouts with some brisk gravel work thrown in is consistently returning 320km's to the red light. Before replacing my filthy air filter I was averaging 275km to the light.

Hey Eddie, I have put the pre filter on with a BMC air filter and it works a dream, much smoother acceleration and better response on the throttle. I have the Leo Vince SBK pipes which helps a lot also. The jetting is next as running a bit rich and pops and crackles a lot on on deceleration but a big improvement to date.

I can source a the BMC filter here in aussie if needed, thay are only $20 or so more than the std paper ones here and re-useable (oiled).

Did you have to rejet much for that filter?

jezzaNZ

Hi Eddie, yes I need to rejet, kits from the states about $100 us just drop it in and you will be laughing. Aside from the rough deceleration and popping, the filters have made a big difference though. Jez

If money where no object we could all have Both (though that fails slightly since you can only ride one at a time)

To be honest I think the Twins need to be short shifted to get proper drive on the loose stuff, but dang its fun to rev them and its seems slightly adictive, requiring some type of twelve step rehab program afterwards maybe

I,d like a 690 for real trails and its probable got enough omph for the Road, I mainly bought the 950 because the Singles just didnt do it for me in the transit sections but I think we may have overcooked it now for the Dirt:facepalm:

Am heading up to Woodhill bike park tomorrow To test the new YZ290 big bore kit and was considering Trailering Katie as well for a pre run up to South head on the low Tide, but Im not sure if she can get through the sand cut out to the Beach (on the stock Scorpions) and not keen to start my day pinned under a 210kg bike when 100kg one is awaiting, its always horses for courses I suppose
