Today was our annual oldies economy run.
[ really just an excuse for a ride in the country and a cup of tea and a yak later ]
Some take it real serious, and others like me just go for the ride.
Anyway, a Suzuki 800 Boulevard won with 90mpg, 38.3k/l,or 2.6l/100k, however you want to say it.
I managed last, [as usual] with 36mpg, 15.3 k/l, or 6.5l/100k.
But that was on my 1978 CBX1000...
I think 90mpg is an amazing figure to get out of a big bike.
Wot you reckon....?

What speed was it cruising at, Chooky?

Dont know what speed but when I talked to him later, he said he kept it at 1500rpm and only changed down a few times for the hills.
I said fark my machine idles at 1500.
I give the CBX heaps, they all like the sound of a six doing 9000rpm.

That's impressive mileage. Was it mostly a down hill course, or was it on the back of a ute? :)

My DR500 gets 25km/l which I think is about 70mpg. I have fitted taller gearing for the road. No way an 800cc can beat that unless he has a sail on it.

I reckon it's piss poor really. Not to disrespect the rider who did it, but pointing the finger at manufacturers.
50 years ago that would have been considered ho-hum economy from a fast (by the standards of the day) bike. Especially allowing for an economy run always turning in better figures than day to day.
Improvements in engine design , and the prevalence of fairings SHOULD mean that bikes today are more economical than back then. Instead they're much worse.

Over at the ninja 250 board people are boasting about 100mpg. Silly americans use engine off coasting to do this which is taking it a bit too far IMO!

Was asked once to go on with of these economy runs,at the time i thought it must be some kind of wind-up but no it seems its actually a done thing.I declined due to the fact i had some paint to watch drying.

Sounds like a fun thing, if you're into going slow, I mean, economically speaking, of course

Hmm, I remember in 1983 I got 90 mpg once when running in my new 750 twin Kawasaki. Only the once mind you  I'd regularly get 55-60 out of it without trying.
The Hornet 900 will see 50 on a legalish cruise, wick it up a bit and down she goes.
90 on the 800 Suzuki? Must have a skilled throttle hand - usually the big twins are a bit thirsty.

I'm still laughing at Chooky taking a CBX on an economy run..... that's a bit like those guys who took that HSV Maloo on the (sponsor deleted 'cause they hate bikes) Energywise run a while back.

Thats pretty good economy though, as the US gallon is 10% smaller than ours. My ER6F regularly gets 65mpg.. I'm sure I could nurse it up to 80.
It revs pretty hard at normal highway speeds, nice for overtaking as it has plenty of brmmm, but it could be geared down substantially and get even better results I would think.

I think I got around 65-70 MPG from my old spada on a spirited ride after I jetted it. Can't recall what they do standard. The BROS650 was terrible on gas, would manage 135km on 9 liters [when it hit reserve] That was a bit too much really.

I get 180km on 12 litres around town, and about 210km on the open road..
Apparantly this is the norm on the nc30..

A fair test would be if I rode it.

I got 31km/l once on my Suzuki NZ-250 going from Picton to Christchurch. Works out to roughly 83mpg.
Not too bad considering it was laden with luggage and had a headwind some of the way involving severe throttling to maintain 100km/h !!
