Ok so I've got to fix my clutch, the Alloy plates are all rooted. They have about 1mm grooves worn into them.

So is it better to just get all steel plates? Pros cons?

as far as im aware they dont come with an all steel option

steel plates last longer and don't leave as much metal contamination in your oil. If you have to replace plates again you should only need to do the fibers.

steel plates will also act a little like a heavyer flywheel while is in gear at least

Hey Cheese...I got new plates and fibres a while back from bartholamule5, think it was every second one that was steel "cant remember"...anyhow he made me a niffty tool to hold the basket when tightening the drive bolt...made things a heap easier. singout it need it... do you still have your expansion chamber in storage for me, mines officially fucked...lol

Looks like the inner/centre part of a clutch does most of the work(?)
According to parts diag my katoom clutch has 2 steel inner plates, the rest are ali.

If it turns out all steel option available for yours, a bit of $ saving as well.

Ah mate, you snooze you loose, I sold it for $150.

Cheers for the offer on the tool. I didn't find it that hard to just pull them out and put the new ones in 1 by 1 though.

i think he was meaning for holding the basket still when you are trying to remove the big nut which holds in the basket.

Oh I don't need to remove the basket. Only the plates.

Just got around to doing the plates and springs. The old ones were fucked. the springs were about 5mm out of spec. and the plates fibres were close, but teh steels were rooted.

Too much Honda power going through that clutch.

Pulled mine apart and found nothing wrong, appears to be recent new fibres/springs/plates (with all steel plates). Kind of annoyed, was expecting something out of whack to explain 'chirping' etc.

BTW, for anyone else, only other thing I came across re steel plates is someone suggesting possibly more wear to (ali) basket from harder steel plates. All ktmtalk guys seem to swap to steel.
