What's the deal and how can I get one? It's for a b'day present, need it by December so can import if that's the best option. Thanks

Top of your screen there is the "search" button. There is heaps of info on here regarding preferences of detector unit. Top models are the Bel STi or close second (I'm biased) is the Valentine 1.
There is a host of other models, but it depends on your budget as well.

RRP $1,160!? I don't like him THAT much. Maybe like up to $400-ish? Is it cheaper to import from overseas? Any good websites?
Will do the search now too. Thanks for your help :niceone:

Try this one... If you get a cheapie you might get away without paying GST, but if you get a good one you'll have to front up with the GST before they deliver it.
My last X50 stopped working, they replaced it with a new one, no problem.

Wow good call on that website, it's about $200 NZD cheaper for the same product, esp with the good NZD at the moment. Questions though..
- The Passport 9500ix (blue) or passport 9500i (red) - anyone tried this? Not a lot about it on the forum so far. It says it has lots of N. America speed camera locations loaded on. Would this just be junk when using it in NZ? It has GPS? Would it be worth the extra $150 or so?
- Why is blue more expensive than red lights?!

I've got a brand new Valentine 1 you can have for $800, it's an unwanted gift as I had already brought one for myself.

With that kind of budget, i would recommend any of the Beltronics Vector 940, 955, 965 or 995 models brand-new off trademe. They are a good basic detector plus also have an earphone jack.
One of the Bels would be a much better buy than a Cobra.

Beltronics RX55 would be minimum, had an RX65 and was stolen from car,so picked up the RX55 off trade me,works ok.

has anyone noticed their detector not working until it's too late on the new cameras?
Apparently they operate on a lower K band than most detectors scan for

No problems picking them up, but then again I didn't buy a cheap POS detector... for this very reason.

X50 Escort works well on my bike, I left K band off as prefer the lack of false alarms- normally the cameras looking at front of bike anyhow.
You will need a radar screamer or amplifier/speaker system to be able to hear it though- they are very quiet.

My X50 has served me faithfully for a good few years now:2thumbsup. Have you thought about whether you'll use an earpiece, HARD or screamer for the audible warning? If not, do a search, you'll find plenty of info.

Are you saying the x50 is a cheap shit one?
What do you guys recommend re h.a.r.d/screamer/headphones? I might leave this to him to decide.
I'll also get the mount and the waterproof bag thing though i guess.

Passport 9500i has a gps system that lets you pinpoint cameras and known speed traps by stopping at location and pressing a couple of buttons, next time you approach location it warns you then counts down the distance absolutely brilliant. You can also use the gps to mark false alerts but so far i havent had any, I absolutely love mine

The X50 is good. There are better ones again, but you have to start paying a lot more coin for those.

I tried an earphone for a start, but it is a bit of an inconvenient hassle every time you get on and off the bike. I ended up getting a small speaker from dick smiths and slipped it into the padding and wired a 3.5 plug onto it finishing at the side of my helmet. Now very easy to plug and unplug getting on and off the bike. Very pleased with this cheap setup.

Yep, I started off with a small speaker and a jackplug but found that I accidentally unplugged it without noticing a few times and also hopped off on the odd occasion without unplugging first. Decided against the HARD as visual cues are marginally slower to react to than audible ones and there's always a risk of the HARD batteries not getting switched off. Got my screamer and mount from www.motocycleradar.com. About to get a new mount for the Triple as I sold the old one with the Blackbird.
