Its True - saw one this morning - riding the wrong way up a one way street on the footpath :)

ex Yahoo..

In a throw back to the old days, Christchurch central police are turning to bikes on the beat.

Police will start using bikes to patrol the city, in a push to increase visibility in the area.

District commander Superintendent Dave Cliff says initially police will be given four bikes and high visibility vests and uniforms. He says the 'cycle cops' will be more visible to the community and will be able to start patrolling the four avenues more easily.

Mr Hume says officers have welcomed the idea, because they are all general fitness fanatics.

Why not patrol on foot? Park the care down the road..and patrol on foot, isnt it alot easier? or is it so that they can actually catch up with crooks on foot? hmm

Well I'm sure they will be out issuing themselves tickets for such flagrant breaches of the road code : Tui :

I was a PC in Woking in 92 or there abouts. I purchased 8 Specialized MTB's and used them for our beats. Caught many drink drivers, hehe. Quite useful.;)

I remember the London Bobbies using big tall bicycles to good effect way back in the 1950's!

If they blew their boy scout whistles their mates would appear like magic from all directions.

Didn't piss about with the truncheons either! :bash:

Wham bam thank you ma-mm, take that from your friendly London Bobbie, no thanks! :eek5:

What about horse cops? I think they refer to them as 'mounted'

Can you legally use your cell phone while riding your push-bike from next month?

Did the cycle cops have blue Lycra tights on ....... and did their bum look fat?

Did the cycle cops have blue Lycra tights on

White helmet with blue checkerbaord

Yellow fluoro vest

Rest of the gear looked like standard uniform issue

White or light bike, black bag on the carrier - presuamably radio etc

Not being in the habbit of staring at copper's arses I could say if it looked fat or not.

Hopefully they can learn to ride single file around the city areas... unlike most cyclists.

I recognise that building in the back-ground, it's just off Salcombe St in Kaitangata, near the coal mine...

Be a quicker way to get around for them in rush hour in many cities.
