View Full Version : Secret Weapon - FXR150

Well..... I have just installed my secret weapon on the bucket. 13 tooth front sprocket on the FXR and it's wicked! I found out I have 6 gears! No way! It even revs out in 6th gear! Can't wait to give this the full test at Kaitoke. I am wondering if I should change it to GP shifting too to see what it is like. Hopefully the new sprocket will give me a bit more of a punch than what I had. I almost never get to 5th gear at buckets and I am pretty sure I will be needing 6th gear on the back straight at Kaitoke now so I'm stoked. Watch out guys....

I'm not so sure about race-shift. I just get a funny feeling talking about it.

Is that where you change gears full throttle with no clutch ??? ;) p/t
Can I please see your gearbox after a race of doing that ?

Seriously though, Hamish, change it to reverse (race) pattern 1 up 5 down.
Makes it easier to hook another gear while cranked over, which is useful at Kaitoke.

Yeah the race shift/GP shift is what I will test out this weekend up Blue Mountains haha. See how I like it. I usually just short shift corners if I need to make changes mid corner. I don't have the press button kill switch for shifting gears, I just close the throttle, bang up a gear (no clutch) and snap the gass back on really quickly.

Well I suppose it was never really a secret anyway! I am one of the last to do it for the FXR buckets that I have been racing against (Richard, Andrew) and they said it makes a difference. I have already noticed a difference, I will see how I like it at Kaitoke. Should be turning the muffler into a straight through pipe in the next 2 weeks and cleaning the ugly bike up so it doesn't look like a rusted heap of shit. A new coat of paint should also make the bike and the rider go faster

Paint it red and put some racing stripes on it, thats gotta be worth at least another 10hp.

Should be turning the muffler into a straight through pipe in the next 2 weeks Why you doing that? What was wrong with your modified muffler under the engine? http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=103179 Were there problems with it? Cheers.

Nah I just want it to sound like it's bigger than it actually is.

Nah apparently I will get a little bit more power because the stock muffler is very restrictive. I actually might not modify this until after the endurance though to be on the safe side! It's not broken so I won't try to fix it.

Did your mod last week, the pipe that runs from the main chamber into the muffler proper was floating around with a broken weld so I threw that away, I also chopped about two inches off the inside of the exit pipe to make it easier to put together again. It seems a bit less restrictive now, it's definitely louder, will see how it goes in two weeks.

Why did I waste all that time and effort with cams pistons and lighting shit. I should have just brought a magic muffler. Bullshit!!!!!!!!! to the power of ten.

Yes I think we can all smell a bit of bullshit, but I am sure we expect nothing less of Max now days.

I am still not convinced on race shift personally. I feel I do to much road riding and that the chance of me going one way or the other on either the road bike or the bucket when things turn to shit (i.e automatic with no thought) and it may not end well.

I am changing mine this weekend. I still have to think about shifting with my left foot. My laverda shifter is on the right. Try hooking your toe under the break to change gear. It don't work.

I have sold it and don't ride on the road so should be ok.

I've got two buckets, old girl race shift, FXR in the process of being built normal shift. Get on the old girl, no problem, get on the FXR, start going the wrong way in the box for a couple of laps. Road bike is standard shift and have no isses when I get on it. Of course your mileage may vary.

Just remember if we make these bikes too loud we will lose tracks.

With so called race shift you have to ask yourself how much attn you want to be giving to changing gear beyond 'When'?
esp if you ride road or dirtbikes you will always pay some attn to it.

Oohh oohh I can feel one of my cliches coming on.

here it comes, here it comes. . . . .

Kevin Schwantz always used std road shift. I'll change over when I get better than him.

Yeah the muffler is heavy as hell and restrictive on the FXR but I can't see 5hp increase from turning it into a straight through pipe. And I cut out a decent size length of the pipe so I could mount it under the bike and the section I cut out was HEAVY. Any other FXR secrets that everyone knows about? Apparently my stock carb is a piece of shit.... anyone have any suggestions?

Overall I am not too fussed with increasing the power of the bike, it really just needed a gearing change I think. It still seems quite competitive against the other A grade buckets and it is a stock FXR150 with just handling modifications

.

I use race shift, push down to change up a gear because I find it easier to up shift in a left hand corner, like anti clock wise in the MT Welly sweeper that way. With ordinary shift Up for Up I find that its possible to hit the ground with my toe under the lever and involuntary upshift, a bit disconcerting under power, mid corner, and full lean.

Race shift is personal preference thing is just like different riding styles, there's no right or wrong, it's what works for you.

I use race shift as I got sick of struggling to shift around left hand corners and now I hate racing with standard shift! Funny though that I don't have a problem riding dirt bikes in standard shift??

I am a fan of the TM28 mikuni (4 stroke version). Main jet around 280 standard needle and start jet. They don't go straight into the standard manifold you have to make a spacer to size up the spigot. I messed up the spacer and ended up with a manifold leak and it drove me mad so if you do it, do it right.

A good upgrade for a carb is to use a standard GN250 to start with. Otherwise a flatslide carb off an earlier DR200 is one to look out for, as is an earlier XR/XL250 carb.

When I changed carbs from standard to the TM I got 1.and a bit more hp out of it. Has anyone ever documented the gains of these other carbs?

The stock carb is best served as an interesting paperweight, or possibly a nice manly decoration for a potplant...

A decent well set up carburetor is worth in the region of 2rwhp. Simple. The stock manifold is surprisingly resilient and will stand having an enormous carb bunged into it. I ended up changing to a Mikuni accessory manifold that bolts straight on, you do need to match it the port though.

My bike has a monster 36mm CV carb on it, and I think most people who have seen it go would agree it goes rather well. I'm not suggesting it's the ideal solution, just that FXR's don't appear to be that fussy on what carb is on there as long as it's not the stock one... Weird...

try down shifting while merging on the motorway :woohoo:
locked up the rear wheel and got a tad scared :gob:
I was ment to go the other way and when the bike is reving to 16-17000 rpm and you smack it into first :bash: :crybaby:

all is good thow the road bike is now race pattern (makes it go faster now)

Hi Henk. How much difference did the muffler mod make? Mine is still standard and I'm thinking about making it less restrictive or maybe looking at other muffler options?

Henk
8th February 2010, 21:35
Not sure that it made a lot of difference power wise. I did it mainly to get the pipe out of the way when I crash. Take minefor a spin on the weekend (if it's rideable, been taking things away again) and tell me what you think.

hmurphy
9th February 2010, 20:44
I took my muffler off again and cut it open. I got a long steel rod and a sledge hammer and bashed out the insides of the muffler. I then turned it into a straight through muffler with pink batts as the packing. Far less restrictive and noisier so it should go a liiittle bit better.

hmurphy
13th April 2010, 21:05
Mint! It sounds really nice now. Sounds grunty like everyone else's buckets. The good thing is it's not too noisy so it's not really offensive wherever you go (except quite suburban neighbourhoods haha). As far as performance goes.... who knows. I am sure it has helped a wee bit for sure, but more importantly it sounds cool, looks cool, and wont get destroyed when I crash on the right-hand-side.
