I've been talking to a few people recently about a day ride next Monday (25th April).
Nothing to punishing, probably 300k around the wairarapa. Meeting at Caltex Upper Hutt and Martinbrough.
Anyone keen ??

We will be too shagged out from the rally... (I hope) Sorry

Say Matthew, why aren't YOU coming to the rally? Those MV's surely don't dissolve if left outside do they? :msn-wink:

You obviously haven't seen my bike recently. Living proof that MV's can take lots of neglect and still keep going.
I'm not going because I never thought I'd get the time away, I was planning on doing the Southern Cross so was saving my time off for that. Now I'm not doing the SC I hadn't thought about it.
Mind you with the wife and kids in ChCh for the weekend anything could happen :)
If the weather isn't too crappy I might turn up for a day. I quite fancy a couple of trips through the Parapara's.
.
.
Would love to join you Matt but we'll be on our way back from Pukekohe on Monday.
Have a safe ride guys/guyesses.

Shall we say Caltex Upper Hutt at 10am and then leaving Martinbrough at 12. I figure going around the lake to get to Martinbrough and then an early lunch at the Fish. That way the sleepy ones can meet us at the Fish at 12 if that suits them.
No route after that yet but I'll confer with my sources and sort something out (Are you listening J2/M6).
Somewhere just over 300k's suits me. Not too long but a decent blast never the less.

I've got me ears on.
Sounds like a good start, and then we could go from Martinborough via the middle road to Masterton, then the Alfredton, Eketahuna, Masterton loop.

I thought it was 1pm, and I'm not sure if it applies to cafes (might mean the 15% surcharge though) - cut lunch, no thanks, rather have a pie from the servo.

Yes.
Posting in glorious 32 kbps dial-up from the Mother-in-law's PC.
I have a 1000km service on Tuesday to prepare for. I hope they clean my bike, because it is approaching Mangell6/Mathewt levels of filth. Well not really, but on my scale of bike cleanliness, it isn't looking good.
On another note, I stopped at Greytown supermarket to get some cream for the meringues, but there was only 2 litre bottles on the shelf. 2 litres of cream. Won't fit under the seat, or down the front of my jacket. 2 litres bottles. Blimey.

About 30 mins ago, the thunder here (Stokes Vegas) caused the windows to bend out slightly. It lasted so long, and so intensely that it could have been an earthquake, had you not seen the lightening. Our decks are now covered in think hail, which will not melt :cold: The wind is howling constantly, with the only relief from the howl being the hiss of the rain on the roof, which becomes deafening at times...
So, what time you guys leaving then? :shifty: I definitely won't be coming, even if it's a good day. Had a long ride over the rally, and I'm keen to have a day of doing nothing.
Speaking of the Fish, for those who have "fished" recently, how is the service? The last few times I've been there there have been a few mumbles :( (Not too sure if I like the surcharge either, my bowl lattes are becoming equal in price to fuel!). Still a good spot tho.

It's a little dodgy, and I hope they sort their attitude out. The newbies seem a little intimidated by us "bikers" and aren't particularly friendly, plus the coffee has been stink the last couple of times I've been there. Also the food, while still lovely, has decreased in portion size about 50%. I'm thinking of ignoring them and making Wild Oats the local.
There are a couple of regular waitresses still working at Te Kai Moana, but that may not be enough to convince me to keep going there.
Start at Maccas Upper Hutt McCafe, ride past the "Fush" and flip them the bird, and stop at Wild Oats for lunch I reckon.

24th April 2005, 22:05
Wild Oats is a good'un. Nice to sit outside if the weathers good, and great indoor seating if it's too hot, or wet, etc...
I've always said, they'll miss the revenue from the bikers if we all left.

I really don't think I've seen Mangell6's bike dirty you know. After newly 4000k on the big50 it hardly looked used. I was hoping to clean mine today but that hasn't happened, it's errr...... well...... lets just say not up to your standard.
NOTE: Meetings times are 10am at U/Hutt Caltex (leave by 10:15) and 12:00 outside the Fish in Martinbrough. The idea is to have had lunch by the 12:00 meeting time. This might be a bit tricky depending on holiday hours but we'll see.
I suggest anyone going has a look here at 9am incase we all write it off as a bad idea. If Jim's over the hill then that's helpful since 90% of the riding will be over there so he'll have a better idea of how bad the weather is.

Our plans changed and we didn't go to Pukekohe after Manfeild, so we're at home now. However, the weather hasn't improved sufficiently for me to even consider coming on the ride - sorry Matt.
Last night's thunder and hail was some of the worst I've ever heard/seen.
Jim2 - I don't envy you riding over the hill in this weather. Take care.
Hope eveyone got back from National Park okay (I guess there's a thread, haven't gotten to it yet).

We have heavy showers from the South, of diminishing frequency.
The weather forecast is for the rain to go away altogether by the afternoon, and Tuesday will be a clear, fine day.
Will post more at 9am.

The last big shower never eventuated and the sun is shining again - however, the roads will be very wet, and it is likely that it will rain on you at some point during the day.

Yes, but I'm probably just going to drone north over the Pahiatua track and back down through Sanson, just to avoid the snow on the hill.
Blimey, I wouldn't ride today if I didn't need to.
I'm going to take it very easy and stop lots, except for the ever increasing rpm upper limit.

Home!
979kms, all ready for the 1000km service tomorrow. I hope Sawyers will clean it for me because I reckon I'd struggle to shift some of that crud with my worn out toothbrush.
I've just about run out of superlatives to describe the R6. I've been giving the upper reaches of the rev counter a workout today, and it just fires a grappling hook out, snares the horizon and reels it in until hit hits you between the eyes, hard and fast. Even in the wet it just hooks up and goes.
The Dunlop 208s on it are beyond description too. They've had the worst riding conditions I've experienced, from sleet, to slick clay, to shiny tarseal, and a couple of inches of standing water around Gray's road. Not only did I never even get a twicth out of them, the feedback communicated through the bars and your arse is exemplary. There is a constant line of chatter from, "You're just about out of traction, pal", to, "Yawn. Pussy."
My new waterproof Oxtar's are actually waterproof too! I hate cold feet, and I hate wet cold feet, but thanks to the boots and a nice thick pair of woolen socks, I had no issue with my southern extremities. I thought my trousers were leaking at one point, but it was just the fuel in the tank matching temperature with the atmospheric conditions. Felt like a large cube of ice gripped between my legs at crotch level. Reminded me of that girl I went out with when I was 19...

Good stuff Jim! I find my Rrrrrrrrrr is also great in the wet, if you're not cocky :msn-wink: Say, how much did those Oxtar's set you back? I need new boots! And, do you wear cordura? What sort, and it THAT water proof?
I'd love gear I can ride in, and stay 100% warm and dry...

Those Teknic pants remained dry on Sunday, as did my Oxtar boots.
Last rally with the really heavy rain, the pants leaked into my crotch. I didn't have the boots then so I can't comment.

My (relatively cheap) R-Jays sure got a soak testing coming out of National Park after the rally and stood up ok. Like Jim2 mentioned - thought I had a leak around thighs but I checked it at Oakune petrol stop - all dry - it was just the cold perhaps from the tank or maybe the airflow around the tank. The Pants had the liner in (for the first time since I bought them) because they are normally too warm. At those sort of temps (3deg+windchill)I will have to get some thermal undies for next time. I guess warmth depends on the number of layers you wear under your waterproof suit.
