After Reading some posts about peoples opinions on what position to leave the fuel tap when parked up I thought it might be fitting to set up a little poll.
So how is it guys? Fuel tap on or fuel tap off?

Mate the later bikes don't even have one - what does that tell you?
The whole time I had a bike with a tap it only movd (99% of the time) to reserve or (1%) to off when I was removing the tank. Being a lazy b'stard I very very rarely removed the tank so...

Fuel tap? What's that?

Now that I have a manual Pingle petcock on my 29 year old bike instead of the OEM vacuum petcock.
I always turn it off, out of habbit.
Just in case one of my float valves gets stuck open, for what ever reason.
Petrol on the crankcase is a PITA.

Both my bikes have one but I never touch it, other than on rare occasions when I need to remove the tank. I recall years ago reading some reason why it is recommended to turn it off but I can't remember what it was. Perhaps something to do with a fuel leak or the carbs??

Why fuel tap is under the tank, as in not easy to get to. It is only intended to to be used for maintenance.
So I never turn it off.

I got the habit of turning the fuel tap off everytime I stop by riding the old FXR. The bike used to flood the engine if I don't turn it off and leave it overnight.

It depends what bike I am on. Don't use it on the triple (only reserve) but if on the old bonnie I use it every time I stop for longer than gassing up.

On older bike's that have like a gravity fed tap or something I'd turn it off - yours is an 07 so I doubt it's necessary. I used to have an old CBX that if I didn't turn it off it'd leak fuel out of the float chamber after 30min or so

mine only gets turned off if dad is riding it for some reason. usually, the next time i ride, it goes half a block before dying, leading into heart attack territory before realising. lol.

I dont even have an off choice on my fuel tap :pinch: The blue lovely only offers on/reserve/prime. Whip the tank off no worries, does not lose a drop :2thumbsup

Likewise - I have a Pingel on my CBX so that definitely gets turned off whenever the bike is parked, anyone who knows CBX's will be aware of the disatrous results of failed vacuum diaphragms on the OEM fuel tap.....
RF900 almost never gets turned off, and as for the Ducati - pretty sure it hasn't got one (but I haven't taken posession yet, so have no idea...)
Consequently I can't vote as it isn't a multi-choice poll.... :oi-grr:

I thought there was benefit in turning off fuel tap and then running her dry. Or is that just the lawnmower. I think it applies to long spells of no running - like a week or so when fuel in the carb would get stale?????? But then I know shit all about engines so this is prolly all bollocks

Mine's vacuum operated automatic. I never even think about.

Fuel tap on or fuel tap off?
I had parked my bike in the public park at Manfeild race track, mid corner only doing 40kph the bike spluttered and I came to a halt.
After much frustration my wife discovered the fuel tap had been turned of.
This not an easy task for a child to do, so one would assume.... but anyways something to consider when your bike is in a public environment where others have an opportunity.

My choke is extra manual at the moment, I have to pull the bar on the carbs 'cause the cable is not connected  Yes I said carbs not throttle bodies......

I remember years ago some bastard went around dozens of bikes at a Baypark meeting and turned off all the fuel taps. Sounds funny now, we only twigged when we all took turns at coming to a unexpected stop.

Thats because you have a vac operated tap. The extra line to the inlet manifold turns the tap on for you when you start the bike and off when it stops running. You might need prime if you ever take the carbs off and pour all the gas in them onto the garage floor.

Having just sorted my fuelling issues, I am more than aware of how things work on the blue lovely
