On that Yamaha I'm picking Spies to be close to Edwards, which is 5 or 6th ?
But I'm not picking him to beat Edwards !
Toseland to put in a big effort and stick it in the shrubbery ! Gaz.

This will be good!

Toseland is already comparing laptimes with Spies:

Yeah but Toseland wasn't the fastest- not by a long shot. Several bikes were faster the Spies time, which would suggest that if Spies were there, he would have been faster too. Toesland only won a WSBK championship because he was on a factory Ducati at a time when Ducati were totally dominant.

Do you think he'd be riding like that if he'd gone through 125 and 250 GP's? Course not. Very talented Superbike banger but a Superbike banger nonetheless. Won't be running with the Aliens and his style won't suit a Moto GP bike.

WTF? You do know he's already raced a MotoGP bike and certainly didnt look out of place. Guess it depends how tired those Tech3 engines are now for the last race of the year. No doubt Spies has a nice fresh new motor slotted in. Top 5 for Spies is certainly not out of the question. :scooter:

Yep not out of the question, but its racing, dudes in front could take each other out etc... So if he gets better than 6th in an uneventful race then well done, I reckon he might just not have the experience at that top level, as it is higher than SB, but good luck to Spies but 6th max for mine. I think this race is more about Rossi and Stoner, and who wins that battle, Rossi will be gunning to beat Stoner after recent results.

I'd say he wouldn't have a fucking clue. Never mind Spies raced the well out classed Suzuki and still did really well. He also seems to forget (or just wasn't around then) that Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner, Revvin Kevin, Wayne Rainey and Mick Doohan to name a few came from Superbikes I guess.

So what were you there for?

Unless you are racing for National or International Championships there's no money it, so it's just for the sheer enjoyment isn't it? I'm not saying you go along to be all lovey dovey but I don't see why ya can't try your heart out on the track and share a laugh with like minded folks off it.

Most of it's only club racing for chrissakes. Even at Nationals level it's only a tin cup you are racing for, there are no sheep stations or pink slips involved. If you can't shake the hand, or share a beer with sthe blokes you've battling with, be it on the track or on the sports field, there's something not quite right I reckon. Isn't that the essence of sport?

Don't think I ever said I wouldn't shake hands and have a beer with competitors mate! I raced at National level and was there to win races. I was fairly agressive in my riding and a lot of people don't/didn't like that. I couldn't give a fuck...as I said...I didn't go there to make friends. I wanted to win races.

I came from a moto-x backround...and the dirt crew are far friendlier and more down to earth that the road race set. When I first went road racing...I was amazed at how many people wandered around like they were Eddie Lawson or something. Far too cool for their own good...and that was more often than not the peanuts at the back of the pack.

Sorry mate, wasn't meaning to have a go at ya (although though your paragraphs above almost contradict each other, lol). Each to their own, we've all got our own itch to scratch, eh?

I dunno, it's just been a succession of working shitty rosters at shitty mines across Oz, or offshore, to get to the point where I can actually afford to be one of those peanuts. It's far far too late in life to be aiming for world domination so I'm not gonna limit my enjoyment by making it conditional on results. Doesn't mean I'm not giving it 100% either, but at the end of a days racing I'm just happy to be there.

I look at Casey Stoner, Max Biaggi or Mat Mladin and for all their massive talent, incredible lifestyles etc they don't seem to be having a good time unless they are winning. They seem to lose sight of the fact that they are leading amazingly fortunate lives, and what they are doing is just a sport, not finding a cure for cancer. That's part of why I like Ben Spies and Troy Bayliss, they don't need to hate anybody to do well, and don't trip over their bottom lip if things don't go as planned. I like the way they've achieved what they have as much as what they've actually achieved. But that's just me, other people actually like Biaggi, go figure......

Mate...as you know...we're all different. Guys like that...they beat themselves up REAL bad not winning. But they'd do that playing cards too. It's just not in them to take getting beat. Other hate it...but hide it better. But I honestly very seriously doubt ANY one at the very top level likes it. I'm betting that's his race psychology coming in to play. A tactical comment to lull his competitors into a false sense of security.

Plus, unless you're a Mair and talk the BS but back it up - it is better to play yourself down - reduces pressure and then if you don't win, you can say well I never thought I would. But, if (when) you do win, you can be very smug about it.

Yeah I read that, but I think it's typical Spies under stating his abilities. He's never been a "mouthy" racer (Unlike me and McDonald).

The fact that he finished as high as sixth on the Suzuki in MotoGP indicates to me that he'll run far more competitively on the Yamaha.

He will join Tech 3 Yamaha for the first time during post-season testing next week.

Whatever that means.

It's not unknown for riders outside the factory team to get factory bikes and factory mechanics. :msn-wink:

I don't think Spies is trying to fox his fellow riders... more likely he's trying to manage the overwought expectations of his more "enthusiastic" fans.

Hope crashers got his Jorge Lorenzo and Colin Edwards voodoo dolls ready and an industrial sized container of pins to impale them with.... he'll be needing some kind on "intervention" this weekend.

Should be a great race. Can't imagine Rossi will be wanting Casey to go into the break with another win and with no championship considerations to cramp his style this time... Should be ballistic at the sharp end.

Nice thing to have in Moto GP for a change, hopefully it will counter out the ego that is Marco Wollyheadedwoofter next year. Rossi seems toned down compared to the antics of Lorenzo and Marco

How much difference is in the bikes if Marco can jump on a SBK from a 2fiddy and grab a podium, talented clown that he is.

To be third at least one and possibly both of those two are going to have to fall off.

Hence the voodoo dolls...

Sorry if it went over your head.

So you still think he's going to sit on that bike for 2.5 hrs and beat Edwards?

Oh I see...you're way smarter than me! Sorry mate. Well I'd say seeing as the first time he rode the R1 superbike at a track he'd never before seen, then fucking near beat Troy Baliss's lap record from the day before that a new bike is NOTHING to him.

I'd say seeing as he beat the Suzuki GP regulars with ease...once even while really sick...and seeing as he'd never really ridden that pile of poo either...would mean that yeah...the M1 will be no real problem.

I think that seeing as he won 11 poles on tracks he's never seen would also mean he's a fast learner. And 14 races in your rookie year? Hell...not even Troy Baliss or Doug Polen could do that despite superior equipment.

So 2.5 hours of practice...at a track he's actually been to...on a competitive bike...I reckon he won't need either Edwards or Toseland to fall off to finish 3rd Yamaha.

By the way..in all of my racing and or street crashes...I've never once been ko'd.

I simply recognize skill/class when I see it first hand. And I've seen Spies race first hand. Have you?

Will be the third Yamaha home this time. 4th place behind Stoner, Lorenzo and Rossi.

So does this mean you're backing away from the third Yamaha home prediction?

Meh... whatever. Huge talent but flawed style that I doubt will translate well to a Moto GP bike.

Never have...read it again...3rd YAMAHA home.

Do you think he'd be riding like that if he'd gone through 125 and 250 GP's? Course not. Very talented Superbike banger but a Superbike banger nonetheless. Won't be running with the Aliens and his style won't suit a Moto GP bike.

Anyway we'll just have to wait till next week when Edwards will stuff him to the tonsils and every other rider within sight will be trying to do exactly the same to the noob.

Dunno...Stoner came from a dirt track backround. What do you think about that?

Well at least Spies is realistic.

Spies completes first MotoGP free practice in Valencia

Wildcard Sterilgarda Yamaha rider Ben Spies got stuck into the first free practice session of the weekend at the Valencia MotoGP today. Despite being Spies' first outing on the Yamaha YZR-M1, the American made good progress, improving by nearly five seconds over the course of the session and finishing just over a second off the top five in 15th position. Spies made few changes to his M1, preferring to get as much track time in as possible as he begins to understand the different handling and power characteristics compared to his championship winning Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike.

Tomorrow morning will see Spies looking to bring the set up of his bike further in line with his style of riding ahead of his first GP qualifying session on a Yamaha.

Ben Spies, Sterilgarda Yamaha Team - Position: 15thTime: 1'35.052

"It was actually a really good first session. Position wise it wasn't what we are used to but I haven't ridden a GP bike for a year and it's the first time I've set foot on a Yamaha so to be realistically only a second off being in the mix is pretty good. For the first day, and only 20 laps on the bike I'm happy. I'm starting to understand some of the characteristics of the M1. I'm going to keep baby steps and keep chipping away."

Massimo Meregalli - Sterilgarda Yamaha Team Manager

"For the first day here in this world with no experience on this bike or with these tires Ben did as usual a good job, but we didn't expect anything else. For sure just one practice is not enough time to say too much but we cannot say that we are not satisfied. Ben didn't want to use more than one set of tyres, he just wanted to spend some time on his bike and get used to the differences from his superbike. Tomorrow he will make another step, I'm very optimistic as I was all season with him."

This is what really happened.

He replaced Capirossi who was injured at Donnington... finished fourteenth and was handily beaten by Vermuelen in eighth. That means you were wrong shithead.

At Laguna he finished eighth and was handily beaten again by Vermuelen who was third. That means you were wrong again shithead.

The only place he beat Vermuelen was at Indianapolis. A track he's raced and tested on his whole racing life. A track that was included in the MotoGP calendar for the first time that year, an asshole of a track and a track that was experiencing the tail end of hurricane Ike. It was wet and cold and blowing so bad that the race was red flagged early. Perfect environment for local knowledge to shine through. He finished sixth and Vermuelen ninth.

This is how I see it. He beat Capirossi at Laguna whilst sick as...and both of them at Indy with ease. Why wank on like a retard about poor Vermulen and Capirossi not knowing Indy...and saying Spies has ridden it all his life? What a tossbag. As you may've noticed...top racers like SPIES can learn tracks pretty quick...so no good sucking Vermulens arse by saying the poor guy doesn't know Indy...oh...and it was raining too...boohoo...haven't you noticed Vermulen is suposed to be a wet weather specialist mate?

So seeing as I said he beat the Suzuki regulars with ease (which he did at Indy) and once while he was sick (Capirossi at Laguna)...which part was total shit?

Oh that's right...none of it.

Dudes, this has got to be the closest thing I seen to an internet fight, lots of crap talk, and well, its on a computer so all the HARD MAN words look a bit well, empty. Who cares really, Rossi is world Champ, season over for results, so who comes 3 Yammy or 5th or 6th is really almost irrelevant.

As for a sister beating someone up cos shes a good singer, or betting when you do or dont want a bet... you can do this all day and not get anywhere. Crasher you bait peeps, its cool, just dont expect not to get shit, you aint NZ's best rider, fact, so chill man. Wait for the real race cos practice counts for feck all. Spies will definitely be on Edward's Christmas card list.

Nothing too spectacular, just a "keep my nose clean, learn as much as I can" type effort from the young fella. I reckon he had a bit left in him, he certainly didn't have the bike as outta shape as he did the R1, just real smart riding with everything to lose and nothing to win.

Well fuck don't I feel like a dick.

In saying that, who would have predicted Edwards to be that consistant the whole race. I was interested in the copmentators comment re: Spies being concerned about the first half of the race as he had trouble coming to grips (no pun) with the outright grip of the new tyres.

Interestingly, come half race, he pulled finger and went good. I think there's probably three other riders in the field with the ability to get quicker as the tyres and handling goes off.

Well done Mr Spies, I'm looking forward to 2010 more than ever.

I think he's smart enough to simply keep chipping away until he's at the pointy end...which I don't think will take all that long.

He really did say that. I download the BBC coverage and he said that in the pre-race interview. Cheeky eh.

Of course Stoner and Rossi in the same garage isn't much better is it... I guess Rossi would like to beat Stoner on the same bike to prove a point (especially after Stoner wins the championship next year).

But perhaps Stoner would give Ducati the "me or him" thing too. I can't see Ducati taking Rossi over Stoner if it came to it. Perhaps Rossi and Burgess should go to Suzuki and help them make a decent GP bike ;)

What is a grid strategy, anyway?

I found this explanation on Ducati's grid strategy... I don't know if it's accurate (dodgy translation?)

""Ducati has a special grid strategy, a procedure that allows their riders to complete the race without fear of running out of fuel.

The goal is warm the tires as soon as possible and avoid an excessive fuel consumption. The rider heads out on the spare bike and brings the tires up to temperature as soon as possible with no worry about fuel, because the bike he’s using will not be used in the race.

Instead of heading to the grid, the Ducati rider heads back to the pitlane and changes to his race bike and leaves the lane and rides back on track at a very low speed to minimize fuel consumption. Once on the grid the tires are replaced with those that have been brought up to the right temperature on the spare bike and kept up with tire warmers.

Unfortunately for Casey Stoner, the usual strategy didn’t work today at Valencia, because the Aussie was so psyched up, that he got on his race bike instead of his spare, didn’t return to the pitlane and his tires were simply cold.

Sometimes explanations are much more complicated than simply admitting we fucked up.""

hahaha...Stoner had a brain fade I'd say. Aye...Spies did good...but obviously you and I will never agree on how he's gonna go. The reason why I'm such a fan of the boy is that I was at Laguna Seca in '07' when he and Mladin went toe to toe and flat out smoked everyone else so badly...it was embarrassing for them. Spies was/is just like Mladin...stretching the fuckout of the throttle cable for 20 odd laps..all over the bike and charging like there's no tomorrow.

It's the same reason I'm such a fan of Stoners. To me...he's the hardest charger out there. To see him on a flying lap is unreal. This year at Phillip Island in the wet qualifying session...I think he was clocked at 320 clicks down the main chute...and there was standing water on the track not just dampness. Sick. A freak. Mind you...Mr Rossi is also a freak...but will he beat Ago's all time race win record before he calls it quits?

Wonder how fast Stoner would be on that M1? Or even on a Honda maybe? He was pretty quick as a rookie on a customer spec bike with customer Michelins, I'd imagine that HRC must be keeping a watching brief at the goings on at Ducati. Stoner on Bridgestones on the #1 HRC bike would be a pretty tough combo. Pedrosa and Dovi are both only on one year contracts. 2011 could be very interesting!!

Did Spies lose a single dogfight in WSBK when the R1 was healthy? Must have been good training with Mladin. He doesn't seem to bother with that defensive lines baloney, just Warp factor 9 and "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough". Rossi seems to have a similar approach.

I don't think Rossi will beat Ago's record. There's going to be trouble at Yamaha next year. Would you let Lorenzo go when Rossi's in the twilight of his career? There's too many good young guys hammering at the walls. If Spies gets in the mix, maybe one of the 250 GP guys hits the ground running, it's just getting harder and harder.

Has Pedrosa ever won a race that wasn't as boring as fuck to watch? Get holeshot, hope some bastard like Elias balks the chasers, get 1.5 sec gap over first two laps, settle into rhythm, ride to finish. Drives me mental. They should bring out the safety car five laps in. He'd never win another race

Can't imagine Ducati letting Stoner go... at any price. Nobody else has even looked like setting the world on fire with that bike. Can't imagine Rossi going there for exactly the same reason. Stoner on the other hand could probably podium anything. Shame he's such a fucking plank. The thought of having to listen to his drivel endlessly when Rossi retires is unbearable. I guess it's more if Stoner wants to go rather than Ducati keeping him.

For Rossi to sign with Ducati...it could wipe mud all over a fantastic and amazing career if he (like all the others) didn't gell with it.

If Aoyama rides the RCV like he rode his RS 250 I'd say he'll go great guns.

That to me, was the biggest shame that Mat Mladin didnt pack up his US Yoshi Suzuki team and go and shake up WSBK, about 3 years ago (at least). It always suprised me that someone like Mladin who appears so focused and driven, never had the urge to go back to Europe. He can't have been happy with the way he was treated in his 500GP career, signs a 3 year contract with the understanding that the first year was a learning year and then gets the boot at the end of the first season.

Another shame is we won't see another epic 250 race!
Moto2 has a lot to live up to after that season and final race.

Not quite true. Capirossi won back to back races in '05 and scored 3 pole positions in a row at one stage. He was leading the World Championship after 6 rounds in '06 until that massive first corner crash with Gibernau at Catalunya put him in hospital. He lost too many valuable points while trying to battle on through injury but it was a case of "what might have been".

During an interview with the BBC, Valentino Rossi warned that Yamaha must choose between keeping him or team-mate Jorge Lorenzo for the 2011 MotoGP season.

"Yamaha have to decide between me and Jorge for 2011," he said. "I have a great option to join Ducati."

Lorenzo has been Rossi's closest rival this year, only losing the title to the nine time world champion at the penultimate round of the season.

Rossi has repeatedly stated his displeasure at developing a bike that will also benefit his closest championship rival. 2009 marks the first time that Rossi's team-mate has finished second in the championship.

Both Rossi and Lorenzo will remain at Fiat Yamaha next season.

BTW: I like Stoner but he couldn't have fucked up much bigger than throwing it down the track on the warmup! LOL!! Then to post the fastest times in testing. His team sure have been really good to him over this season!

I hope Rossi DOES go to Ducati. Stoner will wipe the floor with him on the Ducati and Mr Spies will arse fuck him all over the track riding in the Fiat Yamaha team.

One bins it on the warm up lap, and one bins it after the finish.

I guess a points decision to Bautista, he totalled his bike.

Nicky Haden seems to have figured out how to ride the Ducati... Or at least how not to ride it. Might make a few podiums next year if he keeps this up.

That was the 990: different bike. The 800s were introduced in 2007, the year Stoner won the championship.

Not really, I think only Honda started with a clean sheet of paper, the rest were/are pretty much just evolutions of the 990's.

Kinda funny that Honda were struggling after everyone said it was them pushing for the 800cc limit: 990 V5 - 1 cylinder = 792cc.

Unsure how they work out that they can get back into the pits, do a real slow lap and still be on the grid before the lights go out. Lol.

What a crock

Pretty easy I would say with the way DORNA run things. Everyone out for the sighting lap and then to the grid and then lets waste half a fucking our while the comentators walk the grid interviewing and talking about whats happened in the past week. Drives me nuts.

I've made the prediction before in another thread. I'll make it again now. Lorenzo/Spies Fiat yamaha team 2011

Something else im thinking, if Suzuki want to start playing ball again, and not end up being the next Kawazaki (RIP) they need to front up some cash so good Rossi and burgess can't refuse and hope they can develop the bike a bit.

Lorenzo is the up and coming talent with quite a few more years ahead of him. Rossi, while he IS still winning races and even championships, can't seriously think of racing for too much longer. (2 or 3 more seasons max?)

Hell. it could just be a ratings thing... little bit of drama for the end of season to keep fans interested and wanting to see how it all pans out.

Makes you wonder what is going on with Dovizioso? He was running near the front for the first 3/4 of the season and then he was virtually no where. Battling it out with melandri/kallio for 8th-10th. Same thing at the test. I wouldn't be surprised of midget and dovi are both looking for jobs at the end of next year if they don't start winning some races.

Nope, dont think he has said that - but he certainly beacame cockier than his usual self . - Maybe these guys simply talk like this sometimes as a means of "self defence" to the media ?, as they are constantly in their faces looking for dirt and inuendo.
Personally unless i witness it first hand or hear comments on riders from a direct source that i know i can trust, most if this stuff needs to be dismissed as having much truth.

Top 5 for Spies you say ?, Hmmm, I suspect that will depend on the consistency of others, as there are at least 5 guys that would be expected to be up to a second a lap quicker at most tracks than him.
Would be great to see him duff them up though (as it would have been to see Bayliss do the same)

Read: "After his bold statements to the BBC about Yamaha being forced to choose between he and teammate Jorge Lorenzo for 2011 and a possible ride with Ducati, Valentino Rossi is now backpedaling as quickly as possible from those statements.

Rossi took a shotgun approach to the story, telling the MotoGP press that the statements were taken out of context, hypothetical and that he has no control over what Yamaha does, anyway. He said that he has never spoken to anyone at Ducati about riding there and just mentioned Ducati as possible suitor in sort of a 'thinking out loud' fashion.

After Rossi left Honda for Yamaha, he wrote an extensive and entertaining account in his autobiography of the behind the scenes theater that actually went on between he, Yamaha and Honda, culminating with the Italian rider and Yamaha Team Manager Davide Brivio hiding under a table in the middle of the night as they conspired to get him on Yamaha's MotoGP team. Rossi is rumored to be working on a sequel to that book."

Here are Rossi's exact words during that part of the BBC interview...

Suzi Perry (BBC):
You said you wanted to end your career with Yamaha. Do you still feel like that?

Valentino Rossi:
Not sure at 100 percent. It depends what happens next year.

Suzi Perry:
What does it depend on?

Valentino Rossi:
It depends about my performance. And the performance and the fight with Lorenzo. And the decision of Yamaha for 2011.

Suzi Perry:
You mean if they re-sign Jorge?

Valentino Rossi:
You know, I think Yamaha has to decide between me and Jorge. For 2011. It depends. Depends a lot. Is early to say. I have anyway a great option that is Ducati. To change bike and try to win with the Italian bike.

Suzi Perry:
Would you like that?

Valentino Rossi:
Yeah for sure it is a great motivation, but I prefer at this moment to stay with Yamaha, because I think the love between me and Yamaha - our relationship - is something special and change bike is 'unfaithful' [says in Italian]. I think for Yamaha it is very important that I finish my career together with them, and also for me it is important.

He is right, Yamaha will have to choose between him and Whore-hey, I doubt they can flip the bill for the both of them.
