View Full Version : Protest proposal

One thing that has always bugged me as a bike commuter is the fact that bikers are prohibited from using either the bus lanes or emergency stopping lanes on the motorway. Is there anyone out there currently on two wheels who doesn't think that this is an absolute no-brainer for improving motorcycle safety?

So here's my proposal. Arrange for convoys of motorcycles to commute to work using the bus lanes or emergency stopping lanes. The aim here is to highlight the fact that not only is the government trying to sting us unfairly for a high accident rate but also that they are disinterested in doing the most basic things to improve our safety.

If we don't get stopped we'll pave the way for other bikers to start using these lanes without fear of being ticketed and improve safety for everyone. If we do get stopped we get the chance to stage an impromptu picket line at the heaviest traffic area's in the country while the nice officer does his business.

Poll time. Who thinks this is a good idea / bad idea? Who wants to sign up?

I do understand your frustration and I agree but those emergency lanes are then for a reason so when we get taken off our bikes by a cager an ambulance can get there quickly. (If they are not sent off 100km in the opposite direction.)

As for the bus lanes I agree that would be a safe option as busses are not that frequent but the ones that are, are BIG. :eek5:

Though something for our safety on the road needs to be done. Because I swear even though that loser in that cage looks straight at me they don’t see me. I am fat you know pretty hard to miss BUT THAT DOESN’T SEEM TO MAKE A GOD FORSAKEN DIFFERENCE.:argh:

Not sure that I agree with this. You're implying that motorcyclists would cause a traffic jam on the emergency lanes that would prevent emergency vehicles from reaching someone in need. The whole point of a motorcycle is that they don't cause these sorts of bottlenecks. I'd be extremely surprised if an ambulance was delayed in getting to a crash site because it took too long for a motorcyclist to get out of the way.

This has been discussed before i think, one of the points against it is that there is usually a large volume of traffic that has to cross over those lanes to turn left.

That's why I'd suggest the emergency stopping lanes as the safer option.
