View Full Version : BIKEOI Fundraiser! Action Packs for sale!

klingon
1st November 2009, 09:36
The Scary Bikers Sewing Circle (Auckland Division) has been making action packs and selling them to raise funds for the cause. It now seems there are requests coming in from all over the country so we are making them available by mail order!

What's in the pack? You can have any combination of the following:

Fluoro Vest $6
Iron on transfer kit (for vest, T-shirt, etc) $15
Yellow arm band $2
Yellow flag (without flag pole) $3

How to order and pay:

Send me a PM telling me exactly what you want and giving me a postal address to send it to.
Deposit the correct amount of money into the following bank account (administered by MadDuck):
C C Scott
National Bank Panmure
06-0996-0272056-000

You do not need to cross-reference your deposit with an order - we are doing it as a matter of trust.

Please add a small donation to cover postage and packing.

Where does the money go?

The purpose of the fund is to set up a War Chest for protest actions. We will use it to cover things like printing costs, banners, more raw materials for more Action Packs, possibly some advertising...
If there is any money left over once we have WON :woohoo: it will be donated to one or more emergency service eg. rescue helicopter trusts or ambulance services.
The fund is being administered by MadDuck on behalf of the BIKEOI protest group that has sprung up here on KB and is not affiliated with any other group (eg BRONZ or Ulysses)

Please feel free to ask further questions if you like, but also try to keep this thread on topic.

More info about the different parts of the kit:

The yellow arm bands ($2) are a stretchy/knit fabric that's almost fluoro-type yellow. We have made them in one size only (large) to go over bulky bike jackts with armoured elbows. You may need to alter the size once you get it. You can also (for no extra charge) have a slogan written on the arm band. So far we have:

We won't pay
Who's next?
Damn the Levies
BIKEOI '09
Nick's Myth is no ACCident

Please specify your slogan when ordering.

The yellow flags ($3) are made out of the same material as the arm bands and measure approx. 250mm square. (We can make larger sizes but there will be an extra cost.) Due to the prohibitive cost of postage we cannot supply flag poles with them but we suggest using a fishing rod, tent pole, electric fence standard, bamboo stem or other flexi pole. It's up to you to work out how to mount it on your bike.

PhantasmNZ will be along shortly with photos of the vest transfer options. Each transfer kit comes with a small pic showing how to lay it out, and soon we will be adding instructions for ironing it on.

The Scary Bikers Sewing Circle is willing to produce other kit or other combinations, and even iron the transfers onto the vests for you. Get in touch with your ideas and we will price it up for you - but expect to pay extra for any extra materials and/or work! This is a fund raiser after all!

There are two styles of transfer currently - please advise me or Klingon if there is anything you particularly want (or need further customisation) - Depending on time pressures it may well be possible - for an appropriate donation to the cause :)

Here is the main design (you may have seen this on a couple of other threads)

I've also got this one that I did for my rush hour commutes more than the protest rides/Bikeoi

I can do transfers on a white substrate too that will print on black/dark surafces if there is enough demand

Thanks for the orders everyone! Our next batch will be mailed out on Thursday morning so should be with you in timefor any weekend events.

Please remember that unless you specify otherwise, you will get your vest plus transfers ready to iron on, but YOU need to do the ironing.

Keep the orders coming! You folks are great!

They are the velcro type (just the light-weight mesh ones rather than the heavy vinyl-type stuff)

There is nothing on the flags - they are just fluoro yellow fabric.

We can put the transfers on them, but that will be an extra $10 per side. We can write on them (like we do with the arm bands) but the ink soaks through so they don't look so good on the other side.

Hmm... haven'tperfected the flags yet.... I suggest you get one anyway then tell us the best way to decorate it!

Can I get one with the commuting one on it? (ACC levies could for 110000 more cars onto the road)

Yep, we could do that Wickle... but it would still cost about $15 per flag because of the extra fabric and time.

I have just been experimenting and the iron-on transfers look great on the flags! I reckon they are worth $23 double sided, even if I do say so myself! :sunny:

Yep. Can do.

Just beware of one technical issue: when the transfers are on their A4 sheets, obviously they fit in an A4 envelope and can be mailed out flat. After they are ironed onto a vest we then have to fold the vest and I'm not sure what effect that has on the transfer when you get it out at the other end.

Anyway, throw some money into the account and we will process your order on Wednesday evening for mail-out Thursday. :D

Oh - and PM me your address of course!

Might i suggest, that some of the smaller articles,IE:armbands, would be awesome if they were available on the day of the national bikeoi,as there will be heaps of people there that aren't on KB,or aware of your excellent wares.

The more insignia worn, the better i reckon.

If there is enough demand, I can do transfers on white that will print on dark colours, but I probably won't have chance to get it done this week.

Klingon - any more demand for print on black/dark colours? - if we could get/make dark/black vests - we might be able to pick up the black, black, or black brigade...

Yep, the Scary Bikers are going flat out to get raw materials and produce merchandise! We're quite a team now!

I would also like to encourage other regions to set up Scary Biker Sewing Circles. We would be delighted to share our formulas for making the various bits & pieces and give you ideas on where to purchase raw materials. I think demand is likely to out-strip supply by quite a long way!

Hmmm... I haven't had any other requests for black... but I dare say if we started producing them they would sell. Let's discuss on Wednesday night (if you can make it) or soon after.

Is this correct ?

Thanks to all who placed orders before the Wednesday 4pm deadline! All those orders were dispatched yesterday (Thursday) morning.

For those who placed their orders after 4pm Wednesday, we will get your gear out to you ASAP. A lot of members of the Sewing Circle are away this weekend, but we will do our best for dispatch early next week.

We have plenty of stock and will also be at any Auckland protests (as long as we know in advance!)

Thanks again for your orders, we have started receiving a few requests for funding for protest materials so your contribution is being very well used and much appreciated! :woohoo:

EDIT #2: I tried some more home made transfers using Klingon's tea-towel on board approach (below) and it works like a charm so read her post :)

Thanks team. I've ironed the stuff onto the back of the hivis and learned a couple of things while doing mine that others may find useful if they have blind spots in similar areas to me:

1) Don't overdo the ironing. 2 minutes seems to be plenty. More is not better.
2) Don't catch the edges of one section when ironing another (thereby overdoing that bit) unless you like spending time with a sharp knife and have lots of patience scraping papery bits off hivis vests. EDIT: But also see Klingon's tip below...
3) DON'T PUT NEWSPAPER under the tea towels unless you want a mirror image of it on your table top. :eek5:
4) Baking soda, vinegar and elbow grease can get newspaper ink off a table top. :innocent:

Cheers - Chasio

PS - All suggestions for correction or amendment from the experts are very welcome :)

An additional hint:

5) The cat may think she is helping by moving the Hi Vis vest while you are ironing, but you must find something else for her to help with.

8th November 2009, 08:31
Thanks for those tips, chasio!

Another one that I have found recently:

If you take off your backing paper and find that the transfer hasn't completely bondad with the cloth (you will see whitish areas where it's not bonded) you can put a sheet of non-stick baking paper over it and iron it again. Wait for it to cool before removing the baking paper.

I have also found that the whole thing bonds best when you iron it on a hard surface, so I have a large chopping board that I put under it and iron on the kitchen bench-top (a good height for ironing).

Thanks to everyone who is still placing orders! I will get them out to you ASAP.

The latest ones come with some instructions (the first batch didn't!) - I will hopefully add some of the tips to the next lot of instructions.

I'm sure if you are buying an iron-on kit, for a dollar or two more Klingon will include a sheet of exactly the right non0stick paper to make your life simple :)

One other thing - anyone want to see any OTHER design?

Come along to Danish House on Wednesday, if you can! Also bring your T-shirt with you and we'll see what we can do.

Phantasm is in the process of printing out new transfers and we will be ironing as fast as we can on Wednesday night to get our current batch of orders filled, have some stock for the Auckland ride this weekend, and have some for the Big BIKEOI in the week.

If you can bring an iron, that would be great too. Otherwise we will (hopefully) have a couple there and also some other jobs for you to do.:sunny:
