Anyone just see the item on TV1 news regarding shitfaced drunks taking up valuable medical resources and hospital staff through their stupidity?

Who'd like to guess how many of them will be claiming ACC for their surgery and rehab?

Shits.

The situation of alcohol within NZ culture (and a lot of other places too for that matter) doesn't help. It's too central to how people relax, socialise etc. 'Getting pissed' though f'kin' moronic is just what a lot of people think you have to do to enjoy yourself or to be seen as adult.

To really address this problem, I think you need to shift alcohol to the periphery (or at least shift the idea that excessive alcohol = enjoyment). Wouldn't hurt to start by looking at the representation on TV of alcohol as being integral to socialisation and enjoyment.

Still going to have a beer with my tea though.

it's a terrible tragedy that happens all too often on NZ roads....but i'm sure we've all been young, dumb and full of cum at some stage.

Personally, I believe, it's educating the young ones on how to drink. and perhaps putting the drinking age back to 20!!!

Teaching them personal responsibility and consquences from an early age.

Aparrently they make up about 20% of the total claims bill for ACC in any given year. Hardly surprising I guess. :bash:

Personally, I believe, it's educating the young ones on how to drink. and perhaps putting the drinking age back to 20!!!

In my opinion it should never have been lowered, but then given the "legal age" for lots of things, I can understand the demand for the drinking age to come down. Sadly a lot of 15 - 18 year olds don't have the maturity to cope sensibly with the rights they automatically are entitled to at those ages. Raising the age again will never happen.

Teaching them personal responsibility and consquences from an early age.

Too many kids "know their rights" and bully their parents into letting them have what they want, or simply (at earlier and earlier ages) give their mum and dad the finger and do what they want regardless.

I think it's more a case that they don't get much support when they do try to keep their kids in line - too many do gooders jumping on the "you can't make them go without/you can't expect them to go against the tide/you must allow them to make their own mistakes blah blah blah.

Trust me, lots of kids today are stroppy little self-centred, "I want it now", get- fucked -you -can't- tell- me -what- to- do little darlings. They know their parents can't do jack shit to control them 'cos they'll get reported to the police, or CYPFs etc.

Excuuuuse me. My kids certainly don't act like that.

They know if they want to pull that crap they're straight out the door. I expect my kids will pull some stupid crap in a few years but they've been taught respect for themselves and others, and they know there's so much more to life than getting wasted.

I just wish my parents had have taught me that. I'd have save a lot of money and pain.

Cars werent as fast but were seriously high powered V8's etc, with no belts in the back or airbags. The cars are beside the point cos most injuries are caused by alcohol, so that is usually fighting and falling off or onto things, and generally being dicks. Teenagers are pushing boundaries while growing up, we all did that, but mix in alcohol at younger ages and there is less responsibility. Kids will always hurt themselves accidentally but alcohol makes it 10 times worse. Shit, drink accounts for half or more of teen pregnancies and all sorts of other horrible stuff that screws them and others up. Just my opinion of course but Ive seen all of this.

There is no point in parents telling their offspring not to drink alcohol when dad comes home shitfaced from the local pub every Friday night and mum comes home from a liquor store every weekend with a couple of packs of RTDs. NZ has a sick culture of alcohol abuse, to address the problem we need to start with the parents by setting a good example to the younger generation.

Those are the sort that you have adopted. No second chance.. down the social services, into care. No fucking about.. get one into care, the others will soon sort their lives out. If they don't, they get adopted too. Simple.

Glad you like it. Somehow it cheeses me off that people can drink till they're so wasted then expect the right that my taxes will patch them up when they end up in hospital needing major surgery cos they severed their arm or got alcohol poisoning, or smashed their head in on a concrete pavement falling over paralytically drunk. Not to mention that it shunts other victims further down the treatment line.....

You're wrong there. Smokers pay way more into the health system than they take out. Out of the $11.00 you pay for a packet of Dunhill Red (what I used to smoke) you pay $6.00 in tax. Without smokers tax money...the health system would collapse. That's exactly why the don't just ban smoking...they'd rather just tax the fuck out of you and let you die slowly!!

True but surely there is the issue that no smokers would = more beds....and does all that $6 go to the Health System....??

No. Less tax to put into the health system = way less beds. If you want to tax the people that cost the health system the most...tax the obese. Heart disese...diabetes..hip and/or knee replacements...strokes. Get on the scales at the supermarket and pay up.

But no smokers = less heart disease etc = less tax so balances out...less beds not a problem if they need less beds for smoking related hospitilisation..Smokers probably represent 28% care requirements coupled with Obesity at around 38% (some of which will be smoking related) so maybe a "Yes"...just a thought

I dont know enough about it to comment. Theres taxes everywhere. In petrol in alcohol in cigarettes, the interest my bank account earns is taxed to IRD, the rates on each piece of land in the country, gst. PAYE. plus hundreds more ways I'd say. You think how much money is going to the government. They could pay for that girls treatment, buy her a nice cosy house somewhere on the coast with a view, buy her a new R1 to keep her mind off drinking, then pay for her crash treatment.

ACC levies are included in the cost of purchasing alcohol. My worked bumped up the cost of a pint dramatically, I questioned why and was informed ACC levies had gone up on alcohol. Someone who knows a bit more may be able to correct me on this how ever.

Saw a post on small-time street-class drag racing in late 50's - early 60's in north-east USA.

One thing I noticed straight away was - no fat bastards, either racing or in the audience.

The other thing i also noticed was the lack of hot-dog stands etc in the back-ground.

And KFC, Jack-in-the Box, Wendys, Maccas et all had yet to hit the scene.

People that sneer at all the 'fat-Yanks' should have a look around, we have a shit-load of home-grown fat bastards right here.
