View Full Version : I need a friend - Wellington
Trudes
2nd November 2009, 17:50
Is there anyone in the Wellington area who doesn't work week day mornings or Tuesdays who'd be keen to come and read a book or pick their nose or something for an hour or two some fine days while I ride around and around the Kaitoke Kart track on my bucket?
My work hours have been halved and I have loads of spare time and no talent when it comes to bucket racing and want to get better through practice. I have a key to the track but can't ride there without supervision (Kart Club rules) and hubby works all day, so I need a friend to come with me. Happy to pick you up and drop you off afterwards (providing you're somewhere between Newlands and Kaitoke) and buy you a drink and a chocky bar or something. Pleeassse.:sunny:
Thanks folks.

Just a point; I don't think the karters are keen on the Motard thing these days, I could be wrong but that was an objection in the past that Motards had been using the track without their consent.
Trudes some tuition is a great idea. We've talked about this before but there hadn't been any movement. While it can be done a bit from the pit it is best following someone, then them following you & so on.
If I was a member & not so busy I'd offer. But there are probably times that I could help out on the 22nd trailing the B grade for race or so while, maybe take turns with Fishe or Glen to lead just ahead of you so you can focus on some reasonable lines. When you ride your own race you can tend to get stuck in the same groove. If someone is just a bit ahead of you you can learn from what they are doing.

Yes they are NOT keen on Motards after the track got a carving up by the last lot.
Please don't motard there unless Skunk or I (well 'til the end of the year) are approached first.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, I think Motards are a no no somehow. I have a key for the track but due to the club rules (and common sense too) you aren't allowed to ride on the track unless there is someone else there in case anything goes wrong, so even riding around on my own practicing stuff is not a bad thing for me, just need to get someone to come along. Also it's my responsibility as the key holder to ensure anyone I allow on the track is a. fully nyloned and b. a Kart Club member, however I am allowed to take one person with me to "try out the track" as long as they sign an anonymity form first. I don't want to ruin it for everyone else, so I'm being very careful and playing by their rules.
I'm trying to sort out a lap timer at the moment so when I'm out on the track on my own or with just a couple of others it'll give me something to focus on and an aim to better lap times.
If you find yourself with some spare time and would like to come out, I'd be really keen for some tuition, it really would be extremely helpful (and you could test out your bike etc at the same time). Craig took us for a walk around the track and showed us the best lines and explained why etc a while ago which was extremely useful, but following someone and having them follow me while riding and giving me some advice would be great! I found it invaluable when Flame did that for a group of us at Manfeild one track day. Like you say, it's just finding the time when we're not all busy trying to knock each other off the track or testing something.

I don't actually fall off that often, so you shouldn't have to do anything but sit there and look pretty, it's just the rules that someone has to be there in case I arse off and can't call my own ambulance ;)

As much as I would love to add you to my list of friends wives I have been spending time with recently, I can't be any help at all. Good luck and it's a very smart move. Have you read any go fast books so you have some technical stuff to focus on in your sessions? I have books you can borrow if you like.

No worries Clive, but we will get your bum back on a bucket sometime soon!
I've got a copy of Twist the Wrist 2 that I've read and like a good little school girl, have made notes of things to practice and try and remember. Are there any others you think might be useful?

sounds good. I have Tuesdays off work at the moment so the afternoon would be fine, just have to shut the noisey bikes off by 5pm, so we'll keep an eye on the weather and organise a Tuesday that suits :)

TOTW2 is more digestable than the first one for sure and I rate it as very useful if you can be disciplined about the drills. Go well chick. Time on the track should pay dividends.

Thanks  yep I think track time is what I need, I'm still stuck on road riding mode and just pootle about taking "tidy" lines rather than race lines and don't like getting caught up in the pushing and shoving. The lap timer will help me focus on something also and give me a goal. I found the survival reaction things in ATOTW really interesting and have been consciously trying to not roll off the gas and brake when I get a little nervous even though I know I don't have to. It's such a huge mind fuck for me, but I'll get there :)

Ok maybe two minutes is a little out, give me time to stop falling, do a body check, pick my arse up off the track, pick the bike up, get it started and get back on. So if I'm not back in 10 minutes, call the ambulance

You could always call the Ambo in advance & then Go for Coma, get out & ride as many laps as you can increasingly faster until you do fall off.
If you fail to bite the tarmac & they arrive, just say "Oh it was a terrible accident, my Top fell off & everything" "but it turned out I was ok just winded. Sorry lads you were too slow getting here & missed it all". :innocent:
