Bit of irony here, was reading this thread regarding MP's replies to letters about ACC. First post being a response from Nikki Kaye:

Then bugger me if I don't see this in the news:

A wee search also gleaned this: http://blog.labour.org.nz/index.php/2009/11/02/nikki-kaye-injured-in-crash-avoiding-car/comment-page-1/

Some interesting comments posted....another avenue for protest team!

Wonder how many other Mountain bike accidents she's had and claimed on ACC for?

Just thinking aloud....

There is to be an ACC levy on mountain bikers, the cost will be predicated by the size of the thighs, on a sliding scale.

I wonder who'll be subsidising that claim...... oh that's right, us!.

Will the thighs have to be oiled to slide?

We were actually having a converstation about this sort of stuff the other day. If you go into an A&E on a weekend they are usually full of sports players who are injured. Yet there is no ACC levy stuck on them. Also the other night we were playing indoor netball and one of our players hurt themselves and has been off on ACC ever since - yet not a cent of ACC levies have been paid. When questioning a local MP about it, I was told it is too hard to levy sports players therefore the levy needs to be maintained in a way that is easy to govern - ie taxing vehicles.

In the UK everyone pays National Health contributions... whilst this goes to your pension, it also covers your medical bills etc... there's no other stealth tax on vehicles that i can remember (other than fuel)!!! Can't imagine the Kiwi population taking kindly to it though

I think an income tax based system would be much fairer for everyone, whether you drive/ride a vehicle or not.
At least that way everyone (tax payers anyway) would be contributing equally to the system.
