View Full Version : For those who use radar detectors?

Just wondering, what do you use with it? Earphones? Screamer? or just the sound of the unit? - If you just go off the sound of the unit, do you have an aftermarket exhaust and can you hear it well enough?

Im used to using a HARD unit so should be interested using audio. Funnily though, even with the volume turned down, plug in earphones and its max volumes and is painful!

plug in ear phones, Custom made plug4lugz (?).

I tried using the HARD unit but had problems from day 1 so gave up.

+1 on in ear earphones. They double as earplugs. Also had a HARD unit but gave up and you never know when its out of battery.

I use a sceamer with the Escort and amplified speakers with the Bel Sti. Can hear either at those speeds where a detector is most needed.

My TPX unit came with both blue tooth audio and a cluster of 3 red LED's

I mounted the 3 LEDs on top of my Tacho/Speedo in very good sight and it works very well for me. (more of a visual guy)

I have not fitted the Audio and don't think I will...thats after 12700km.

Thats the detector and if you look through the screen you will see the cluster of LEDs perched on the gauge panel

I had HARD before, but the requirement of batteries, plus its unreliability, I doubted if it would actually go off when I really needed it. Plus, how do you know the batteries have suddenly died mid ride?

Radar is plugged into my Baehr system now, so all audio is fed to my helmet via single cable and prioritised etc

are there any radar dectectors out there that use bluetooth to transmit the signal? I have a bluetooth intercom headset that i use on my bike.

I tried using a dongle to transmit to my Scala but I couldn't get it to pair.
I'd be very interested if someone has got one that will.

I'm using a hard at the moment, can test the battery mid ride by switching radar off and on again.

audio is by FAR the best signal to use as you process it faster than visual.

Agreed but I'd like it without having to plug in wires all the time.

Absolutely. Screamer for me. Got sick of accidentally unplugging my earphone connection a good few years ago.

The whistler hard units I had (I had two as batteries dont last long) would flash to give me a low battery warning - but yes it seemed like all the time they were giving a low battery warning.
I did have an uber bright LED on my dash which worked good - but then the whistler cruisader doesnt have audio!

Good idea!

I use ear phones at the moment but had a powered speaker hard wired on the bike. Found the speaker not quite loud enough for me so am planning an up grade. I would like to get back to the speaker as it means I can just get on and go knowing it is all powered and working. I used to have a wireless system that played audio as well so you knew that it was still working but it was a home made job and slowly died on me. It was bloody good though as no more wires to think about.

er, isn't a farken LOUD screamer a little odd around town? Especially when the cop is passing you going the opposite way?

Yeah I guess it can be silenced.

Yes indeed, that's why you have two volume settings, plus an "off" or simply press the mute/cancel button if you have an Escort X50. I held off buying one for a year because of the worry about it being loud in town. Worries unfounded!

I started off using an earpiece but found it too much of a hassle when getting on and off the bike. Ended up installing a small speaker inside the helmet wired to a 3.5 audio plug on the side of the helmet (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=149038&d=1256853526). Very easy to plug and unplug when getting on and off the bike now. It was a very cheap setup to do.

Detectors, wires, speakers, earplugs, lights, batteries, too much hassle!

I have discovered there are little notices everywhere there is a speed limit imposed!

What I do is look for them and just maintain the speed indicated and just change when they change!

I don't know why had never seen them before, seems to work best for me! :innocent:

So you don't do any overtaking manoeuvres then?

Not if it means exceeding the figure posted on those small round notice's! :innocent:

Which could be considered a stupid and dangerous way of riding. If you are going for an overtake - do not fuck around.

140 can come up real easy on a bike... and that is instant loss of licence now.

I sure like having an ear on the spectrum to know when there is a cop around the next corner.

If I go slower I find we don't need a radar detector any more! :innocent:

Now that I am old I have been practising steady driving at 80kph close to the centre line too! (for safety as I can't see too good now a days)

I know that other drivers are pleased to see us old folks out and about because they all toot and wave to give us encouragement!

Young folks are so nice these days! :bye:

Hey, i have seen groups of riders like that. Half a dozen bikes all in a tight little bunch crawling along at 95 kph tops with a stream of frustrated cars behind them. :slap:

Your kidding me!

Bike riders should be forced to ride on their own and sit a special certificate before they can ride in groups!

Harley's could be exempt though because they are sold in packets of three! :scooter:

I used to have earplugs into my helemt and that worked really well but I got sick of always being last out onto the road when I had to plug in. I got a sceamer about two years ago brilliant. Little switch for LOUD - mute and quite.

Detector shouldnt be going of in town anyhow. Just need to sort the settings

Screamer. Works brilliantly. Disabled X and K so no false alarms. (yeah i know cameras back on K).

Cop pulled me over in town on way to work, thought I had stolen bike as the 'alarm' was going off when i passed him.

Got a switch for loud, quieter and off. Should have put this on the left hand side of the bike not the right- have to take hand off the gas to change it.

Any recomendations for a good bluetooth dongle for RD?
