Almost taken out on the way home tonight & as a result I also learnt a valuable lesson.
Watched a loon make a wild, out of control swing from the inside lane into the middle lane and then sit on the arse of the car in front. I was in the fast lane at 100kmh and was just about level with his door handle when he made the same crazy swing into my lane. I slammed on the anchors and he ALMOST touched me, then wildly went back into the centre lane. If he had touched me at 100kmh it would have been all over rover.
Friggin' lucky, I thought! I then started thinking about what may have happened if I had canned at that speed. I've got armoured jacket, pants and proper boots so I may have been hurt but not dead... then I felt a knocking on my helmet, looked in my mirror and saw that I had forgotten to do up my helmet... urgh. Therefore methinks I would have been brown bread as my helmet would have come off as soon as I was hit and any impact would have cracked my skull like a raw egg..
So moral of story is: Sometimes you can't control or even anticipate others' actions... but give yourself a fighting chance by checking that your flammin' helmet is done up properly before taking off!
So tomorrow I'm off to buy those ridiculously expensive but fabulous shoes I had been umming & arring over ;)

Hi gav & jazbug,
Decided that spending money on a 2nd hand Ducati would no doubt cost me $$ in maintanence. So waiting for a 2005 Kwaka 636 to arrive. Sawyers now tell me it's end of this month. Had to yet again postpone my CBTA full licence today with RoadSafe due to work commitments. So Barry at Sawyers will probably have to deliver the 636 on his way home (he lives up the road) and it'll stay in the garage with delivery kms on it until I get my full licence.
Italjet to Kwaka 636 is a HUGE step, I know. I've always jumped in at the deep end.

It takes 21 days of doing something before it becomes a habit. Don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather not ride a bike at all without a skidlid. Never actually think about doing it anymore, just allways do it, and before I start the bike too. :msn-wink: :niceone:

Quasi'sis red. Must say it is very nice. Shame I'm gonna get the Daytona 650 when I get my next bike else I'd get one of them, or an 04 R1.

No need to pester Sawyers with a home delivery then you have to find space to store it until you get the full licence. Then you have to run it in. Just so happens I helped run in their 636 demo a few weeks ago, so at no fee I would be more than willing to take care of your one. I'm not far up the line either if you want to come round and clean it. Great choice Debk I was really impressed with my time on the demo 636 and weight wise it's as light as you can get a 600 these days.

Nah, Gixxers are so last year.
Seriously though, notice how last year (well 03 and into 04) most sixhundy buyers were going the gixxer route. Quasi was almost alone on his 636. This year, it seems to be the bike of overwhelming choice.
R6's are still a minority although not as much as last year when FireFighter was pretty much a loner like Quasi.
And before the gixxers were the Honda's.
Tis interesting from a non-fanboy position. Personally I think it's best for us as consumers though. As no individual player can dictate the terms with competition being so close, they have to really work hard to get our business, which is of course brilliant for us.
Oh and before I forget. Congrats debk, sure you'll love it. You may have to hook up with Jim2, and swap cleaning secrets over coffee as only new owners can.

I remember going on a ride with them both, nhuanh on his 636 and Quasi on his Ducati 750. And Firefight wasn't alone with the R6 either, remember a certain Yamahman? (he gone now) :wavey:

Almost taken out on the way home tonight & as a result I also learnt a valuable lesson.Glad you're still with us Deb! If I see a driver making maneuvers like that I steer well away from them...but like you say, we still can't control others actions.

You would probably not survive a bin in heavy m/way traffic at 100 k's, unless the cagers are very alert and avoid your tumbling bod. Having said that, I did, but I don't recommend it.
Always give wankers like that a very wide berth.

I've survived too into oncoming traffic. The truck that hit me from the side flicked me over the median barrier. Broke my wrist.

Glad you missed them. One of the exercises is trying to imagine what the heck the clown near you is going to do next & how to avoid it/escape route.
People are increasingly impatient so lane change at random. They don’t see a bike as a threat so they often ‘forget’ they just passed one.
The others may offer to run in your new bike (like that’s ever going to happen) I’d rather ride the Dragster, remember seeing one at a bike show, they’re cool.
Make sure you remember to strap those shoes up, you might break a heel or something techi-mi-cal.

Great riding debk. Had a similar close shave many years ago but without the prior warning of the idiot's driving habits (just rocketed up from somewhere behind me then shot across my bow without warning) - it's not fun. Glad you handled it well - I think you're ready for your 636.
How did you feel afterwards? I stopped the bike on the footpath, and I was shaking so much I had extreme difficulty getting the lighter flame and the end of the cigarette in the same place at the same time for long enough to light a smoke.

So I take it your bike's catalytic converter is all up to spec, passed all the emissions tests...
Because, of course, you wouldn't rant about the evils of smoking whilst spewing out vast amounts of carcinogens thanks to our "safe" lead-free petrol... You'd have made sure of that...

I know that my bike and the cars around me are destroying my lungs. I filter down the motorway, ( oh and my pipe is pointed behind me so I don't get that one). I put up with this as riding is a truely enjoyable experiance and they are the roads I have to travel in order to get to work.
I have been known to partake in smoking other substances, again for an enjoyable experiance. when the correct precautions are taken damage to the lungs can be minimised (vaporisors etc)
Smoking Cigaretts however has NO positive externalities of consumption, because I enjoy the above two activities I feel no need to further directly damage my respiratory system.
I like to be able to breath well, taste my food, travel long distances in aeroplanes withou going insane, and stay inside when its cold if I want

But see I can do all of that stuff becouse for me atleast it's not the nicotien that I crave. It's purely stress for me. Am more than able to go long flights without going crazy, unless you don't call Dallas to L.A. to Auckland a long flight. I taste food fine and have quite a pallet if I do say so myself. Nothing me or wolf say will make you think smoking is good and for the most part we agree (or atleast I do) but sometimes it just helps to calm down. Recently riding my bike has calmed me down, even dealing with crap cagers. But, since it is out of commision and apparently will be for a while my stress level has risen and risen and the only thing that drops it is smoking. Not having a job doesn't help stress either.

Glad nothing happened :niceone: If you helmet had been done up and you crashed, you would have been fine...
now, i'm not wanting to be a doomsayer here, but I think its worth pointing out that of all the motorcyclists that get head injuries, there is a significant portion that not only had a helmet on but they had it done up and the damn thing came off in the impact.
The strap really does need to be pretty tight and the helmet the right size to ensure it doesn't come off. Hence, dragstrip riders have very tight and uncomfortable helmets in case they have an off cause they know it'll be a big one.
Anyone out there with a loose helmet really needs to think carefully about how much they value their head.
on the other topic though, I'm glad to see another kwaka joining the fold Debk!
