Rusty was racing at Oran Park when a Proddy VFR1000 'let go' and blew the alternator clean off the motor.
Next day the Honda press release said the bike retired 'due to an electrical failure.'

Ive heard something along the same lines from a car racing team.
"we retired due to an electrical problem"= conrod through the alternator:shit:

Out of my 883 Twinsport race bike and the only things I broke were myself and the sticky outy bits on the bike when I cartwheeled it. Sportster based motors are tough as fuck.

Or a casing broken through into the water jacket. Had to retire because of a coolant problem.

I think that may be due to a generally high expectation of failure. No surprise, no big deal, no big interest or reaction.
Plus the Buell is a premium piece of kit, so you wouldn't expect a catastrophic failure of this sort.

We don't know how the vehicle was operated or maintained either.

Yep. Even Buells blow up when they've been run hard with no engine oil.

Well, a friend of my dad's was going to join us at a track day, however, his Buell XB12X (I think) was making funny noises after ONE track day at Pukekohe, turned out his crank was bent and it was going to cost over $10,000 to fix. Just one perspective here.
