Went through K Gorge this morning - in pursuit of the latest Waikato Tag. Realised whilst so doing that I had never ridden a bike through there before...how slack is that?

Thought it might be a little challenging but in fact its not so serious - no worse than the hill over to Raglan really. Road surface is pretty damn good these days and the road is less narrow than I remembered. It was a little wet in there but the surface was more than up to carrying a bit of water. Nice ride. Pity about the 80km speed limit I thought...t'was difficult to stay that slow, even for an old fool like me. :scooter:

The return trip was a little less comfortable though - there were about ten million truck and trailer units coming through the other way - which tended to increase the focus on the cornering lines one chose...:blah:

Still - no "TWOING" moments at any point. Hafta do it again soon - preferably on a sunny day. :sunny:

Alot have trouble getting their cars through there at 60k's an hour, most truck and T units pull through at 80k's but a few lay down when concentration by the driver is lost....Then theres those in cars that think they know the road, look out for them all the time as they cross the centre line big time !!!

That bit of road is a doddle. I believe people have trouble with it because there is no (apparent) reason to pay attention.
Come down and sample the Manawatu Gorge. It's still 100...)(*^&&%&^% yellow lines tho.

You need to do the Coro loop....not on weekends tho! Seriously it's a couple of hours ride for you from the Tron and it's a great collection of roads & views.

I think the gorge has had some road engineering applied to it these days. Some of the corners now actually have [correct] camber!

It's much nicer than it used to be.

It used to not have an 80km/h limit, like some of the other roads around the country that have been "improved".

I've only ever driven through the Karangahake Gorge, but will be riding through it in about two weeks on my way home, can't wait! From what I remember it is pretty twisty, with a decent surface

the Karangahake Gorge is pretty crap now days.

speed limit down to 80km/h, tons of double yellow lines.
full of cars & trucks, and 9/10 there is a cop floating around there also, and people are annoying and won't pull over and let you pass.

Avoid it if you can. far better roads around

Ah no it hasn't! Speed reduced to 80K's is all! I travel that road most weekends over summer, going to Bay Park in the truck with the super saloon in the back, we do 80 through there easy.:girlfight:

Back in the days when I drove hyped up sports cars, I was lucky enough to get caught at the entrance to the gorge just as a truck had lost its load and the cops had closed the road off.
Long story short, cop challenged me to a race...basically from the start of the gorge to the end, no traffic coming either way, we both had fun :)

So did you let him win? I imagine if you had won, that you would have received a 'prize certificate'...
