I am, thoroughly.
Having had Catholicsism beaten into me for years, I don't have a lot of respect for the organisation.
Id like to hear more about the aids sufferers who contracted the disease because using condoms is a sin.
And about women and children dying in child birth for the same reason.
Or from the women who would make better Priests than some of the kiddie fiddlers the church protects.
Cynical? You bet!

It was reported that Benedict considered Catholicism superior to all other religions - bit of a righteous viewpoint if you ask me.

Yeah, but whats the bet he will either a) dodge/refuse to answer the questions or b) declare (once again, as so many before him have) that the church know best and they wont be getting any changes from him.
Because of course, the church never screws up -yeah right!!
Anyone else think the scene in Dogma (the movie) where two of the characters are speaking with the Cardinal is a great example of church thinking?

"You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate."
Had to be put in :D
I don't see why people are angry at this new pope john paul was hardline too on the same subjects, he chose just about all of the cardinal's.

Its because changing with the times isnt a sin. It used to be a stoning offence to wear clothing made of two types of fibres. So all you lot reading this in your cotton/polyester blends, you're all on the hell highway!!
There is a difference between keeping faith with your traditions and being pricks with your heads buried in the sand. That sort of thing is why the Catholic church isnt exactly seen in a positive light in many quarters

Yeah but do they OWN the blimmin media or summat.... Sorry folks but it's boring boring boring...... Oh yes, the humble servant bit... hahahahahahaha... Now that was funny coming from a German intellectual but the rest....
Good grief! Nothing against Catholics or any other religion but I'm sorry, the whole thing was a bit over the blimmin top... I suppose we should be gratefull we were spared weeks of coverage of Chuck and Camillia's wedding but really.... REALLY boring.... (talk about a cult of personality)

Can't expect anything else from a man whose life has been bookended by the Hitler Youth, and being the Grand Inquisitor of the Catholic Church.
No one expects the German Inquisition!

No, I'm not sick of the Pope thing yet. At the risk of reviving the Religious Rave (Requiescat in Pace) I think that interest in religious debate is a positive and healthy thing. The media hype is typical of a sensationalist age, but the issues are real and relevant. The future face of Catholicism matters, because of the power and influence that the church wields, and because of the interconnection of religious, political and economic ideologies as well as moral questions.
More, please!

I am thinking this guy is somewhat of a temporary pope. he was elected as to not rock the boat in the memory of JP; they made sure he was guaranteed to continue the hard line of JP, and that he was old enough to ensure a change soon enough. then they may go with someone who can make some actual progress.
he looks like a mob boss to me, even though he's german....

now now - no need to get technical...
I have a couple of observations on the whole thing...
1) Why, after entering the enclave, must all proceedings be kept secret, under threat of being excommunicated?
WHAT'S WITH THAT?
2) Why change name to Benedict? The guy had a name before being Pope... and he needs a NEW ONE?
anyhoo - yup... sick of it (and actually agree with Sniper..)

We're all off to hell tho, unless you've been living in the cupboard for your whole life. Least it'll be warm in hell. :shake: :ride: :killingme  :Punk: :drinknsin :devil2: :buggerd:

It did occur to me, that if they're following God's will in selecting a new Pope. Why weren't the Cardinals individually isolated with a list of nominees for a period of time to pray for guidance. Then they would cast a vote and the winner is whoever had a simple majority.
This allows no possibility of influence or lobbying during this period.

Hehe freind of mine used a phrase awhile back I think you'de like bugjuice. Was when some mormon missonaries came to my house (family was mormon at the time but I never felt right about it though I did go to church and all that to make my parents happy) and he happend to be there. They tried converting him and told him what heaven was supposed to be like and don't you want to go to heaven young man? Well his view of it turned out to be a bit like mine. Quiet and restrictive. So he tells them "If that is what heaven is like then I hope to burn in hell." The look on thier faces was something not to be missed.

Considering that when you are pope you are pop till ya die they wont want a young guy in office ever. Imagine if the american presidency was the same way. Could you imagine 80 years or so of Bush? Nah they want someone that will keel over after a couple decades so they can put someone new in.

John Paul was in the hot seat for 30 odd years, wasn't he..?? just trying to remember what I heard on the news.. They obvisouly don't want too much mileage out of them now?
Makes you wonder what they get up to in that room they're locked in. That smoke has to be lit by something...

so close yet so far mate. i rather thought it was promiscuity that spread aids, not the lack of condoms. But then, I'm a christian, so what would i know?
what interests me about the pope being elected from germany is that they've recognised that catholicism in the west is really taking a downward turn and that they need to address that more than they need to promote yet more growth in latin america.
i beleive he's 78 but i guess it'll come down to how well he can look after himself in the next few years as to whether he's 'temporary' or a real mover and shaker... or mover and 'fix it down right where it is nower' as some are suggesting!

Regarding the aids. Nothing to do with religion. Its unsafe sexual activities that can lead to positive HIV status. Once the HIV brews for a while you become AIDs positive. Condom use can reduce the risk, but apparently not remove the risk. Then there is the other ways of contracting HIV, but we will not get into that...

The last time the College of Cardinals elected a "caretaker" Pope, they got Vatican II.
I still reckon they should have run the election as an international "Pope Idol" competition where Catholics got to TXT their preference, as suggested by Raybon Kan.
