sometimes my job takes me to this place where they do compliance of bikes, and i've had the chance to perv at / sit on a range of cool machines.

today a Buell XB9S was sitting in the corner from whence it caught my eye as soon as i walked in the door. what a crazy looking bike! i had the opportunity to sling my leg over, and something inside me just went YESSSS. putting a foot on the right hand peg tucked my leg up into the big recess in the frame and faux tank like the bike had been made to measure. i wanted to turn the key and never come back - it might have happened had the key been in it.

in hindsight im a little surprised at my reaction, i've always thought naked bikes look pretty okay but usually go for full fairings, and have typically been a jap fan through and through, from bikes to girls to cars. after today im a bit of a closet convert, and i totally want one. suddenly my vague disinterest on reading about buell being shut down by HD has turned into outrage, etc etc. i've done a bit of googling n stuff, so now im looking for some more 'first person' experience - guess i just wanted to start a buell thread and see what comes out of it.

i dont have a full license yet, still on my learners in fact, so legally being able to ride one is a ways off. is it worth me trying to get my grubby paws on one now? there seem to be some crazy cheap buells around at the moment. totally cant afford it but dont want to miss out!

speak to me of all things buell :soon:

absolutley go for it man. i test rode almost 25 bikes of diferent brands and sizes and then i got on a Buell XB12S and fell in love... it just seemed to be custom built for me.

try and get a newer Buell, all the issues were fixed with the bikes newer than 2004. i got a 2007 Buell Lightning XB12SS and am loving it so much so i am keeping an eye out for another one.

most fun i have ever had on 2 wheels.

http://www.cyrilhuzeblog.com/2009/10/22/buell-motorcycle-company-is-it-really-over/

When Buell officials thanked the company’s customers, employees and dealers for an unforgettable ride, it meant that it’s was over for the only American sport bikes brand. After Erik Buell made his emotional good-bye speech, President Jon Flickinger said a limited number of motorcycles were available for sale through authorized dealerships and that production will end definitively on October 30. But is it really over? Since the dramatic news of Thursday October 15, many things have happened.

Last Friday, the Walworth County Economic Development of Wisconsin where Buell’s plant s located, sent a letter to Erik Buell to see if the Association could help him put together a business plan for Buell to continue manufacturing motorcycles. Practically, the association is proposing to help find investors to rescue the manufacturer and save 180 jobs in the city of East Troy. Think about it. Buell, although geographically away from Harley-Davidson, is so integrated with the mother company for its components that Harley didn’t and can’t sell Buell. Harley is just discontinuing its assistance in parts & technology. Without it, Buell Motorcycle Company is dead. Except if Harley-Davidson would both let Erik Buell continue to exploit the Buell name and its goodwill value, let him use the designs, models and technology acquired during the last 26 years, and Erik Buell finding the adequate pool of investors. The only reason I see for Harley-davidson to refuse would be if the company intended to enter later the sport bikes segment. As the opposite, Harley stated that the company wants to re-focus on its big cruiser & trike models. So, why not? FYI, my sources also tell me that Wandell is submerged under letters of Buell supporters asking him to reconsider his decision. I don’t believe it will happen, but Buell restarting smaller and stronger without harley and new partners is still a possibility. How many brands were born again & again & again…? What do you think?

Hopefully the Buell company can pull away from HD...

OMG where do I start?

Oh BTW there is an ENTIRE RANGE OF BUELLS that you seem to have left out...

I will comment on the thing that irks me the most...the CR is an unfaired R...

WELL! it most certainly is NOT merely an unfaired version of the R. I happen to know this cos I frigging well own one. Thats what I thought until I rode one and the difference was night and day compared to the R. Then when I bought it and was avidly reading the manual I discovered that there are quite a few differences, like gearing ratio, wheel base, sprocket, suspension setup etc...

I have ridden a lot of different Buells and obviously own a few (LOL) and in my opinion riding a Buell is the most fun you can have with your clothes still on!

Biased? HELL YEAH! I have ridden a few other brands as well and can honestly say that the only other bike that was almost as much fun as the Buell was the Triumph Speed Triple

I simply covered the basics, and what was available new from dealers in NZ is quite different to what is on the Buell website. It was just a basic sampler to help with the designations.

Why don't you post up the model range?
The main difference between the R and the CR I rode was much improved fuelling on the CR, but that was simply a ECU patch. I prefer the R myself.

Point taken and apologies if it seemed as if I was having a go...

Got my Buell goggles on at the mo and am just so totally pissed at HD that I am a tad sensitive LOL.

For that matter the range that I am talking about is the good OL' back to basics tuber range and altho they have been out of production for a few years...from memory I think 2001 was when the last X1 rolled off the production line...they are still out there and available to buy.

Quite frankly if I had some spare cash I would be buying a 2010 XB12R...as well. Cos you can never have too many toys!

Hey Drogen!

About a buell ride club...oops! we forgot to contact you last weekend...or what I mean to say IS that AJ forgot to contact you! Coupla weekends ago I was down in Welly and hooning around on the CR...AJ, moi, Balzy & CJ went for a great ride on the Saturday out to Castlepoint, wow I was buzzing, just loved the roads and the scenery and it was so cool to be in the company of 2 other Buells:yes:

Nudemetalz? Did you mention yr sis has an X1 that she finds a bit much around town? Mine is an every day ride, work every day and then a decent hoon at the weekends. I have got custom bars that are actually an inch lower and more forward than the originals and I certainly notice a bit of pressure on the palms of my hands when I'm in heavy traffic but the sheer enjoyment of the ride makes up for it. The trusty ol' girl has pretty high mileage on her and I have just recently replaced the TPS (original was playing up, its a bit tired LOL), John at Triplezee did his magic...well I reckon she is now running better than she ever has. X1's are known to not like cold starts, I got tired of holding the throttle open while she warmed up and resorted to tweeking the idle cable, basically using it like a choke but now she starts from cold and sits there purring! I'm stoked! Took her for a hoon up #16 and beyond on Saturday and had the entire road to myself, it was primo! When I finally got home and tucked her in for the night I gave her a goodnight kiss, YEP! I actually kissed the tank! Thats how happy I was and how fantastic she is running.
Love my Buells!

A mate of mine (long hair and bearded biker type) who I never pictured on a Buell surprised me by snapping up one of the last 2010 Blacknblue XB12R models. Its sex on wheels (and he look mighty fine on it too)...anyway what was my point? ummm oh yeah...talked to him the other week and got an update on his "affair with the Buell" , reckons at first he felt like he was cheating on his HD drag bike but now he is riding the Buell most of the time and is loving it more and more everytime he goes for a fang. In particular he really loves the way it drops into a corner and accelerates out as if its a cocked and loaded pistol...oh yes, its fair to say he has been bitten by the bug!

nudemetalz
28th April 2010, 13:22
Buellbabe, - it's mainly the gearing she finds a drag on the X-1...2nd gear is revving it's nuts off (relatively speaking) and 3rd gear is too high, making it hunt.
It does have the ugly scoops taken off and a pod put on so maybe the fuelling isn't quite right.

We took that, my Guzzi and a Fazer 600 down to Wanaka and back at Easter. We took bets as to whether the Guzzi or Buell would break down first. Neither did, the Fazer gave an issue or 2 !!!!

buellbabe
28th April 2010, 13:51
Oh I get ya... you mean trying to do 50kph? Yeah...need an inbetween gear but thats the case with a lot of bikes eh? Ya gotta sit bang on 50 in 2nd or do 55-60 in 3rd. Thats what I do anyway :-)

The Long Way Down with Compass Expeditions

When it comes to adventure-style holidays, few experiences even come close to the thrill of riding a motorcycle through the Patagonian region of South America, taking in the incredible sites of the Andes on a ride through Chile and Argentina.

From Incan ruins to volcanoes, glaciers and high-altitude lakes, more and more people are choosing to discover South America by motorcycle and from a standing start 2 years ago, Australian-based motorcycles tours company Compass Expeditions is leading the pack in terms of premium adventure tours running up and down and across the continent.

With its own fleet of BMW dual-purpose motorcycles, shipped over from Australia, Compass Expeditions is running a range of all-inclusive riding tours through Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Bolivia. In total, there are over a dozen different motorcycle tours to choose from, ranging from 12 days to a 42-day two-wheel expedition that takes in five countries.

All motorcycle tours, which start at around US$5,000 for a 14-day riding and sightseeing tour (US$3,000 per pillion), include accommodation, most meals, additional excursions such as helicopter flights, boat trips and treks, and most importantly use of a fully serviced motorcycle for the duration of the trip. Each tour includes a professionally trained support crew, which accompanies the riders in a four-wheel drive Landcruiser that is equipped with a mobile kitchen.

Accommodation is mostly in 3-4 star hotels, with some tours including at least one night of camping in fixed shelters at one of several permanent camp sites along the designated route.

“Our tours are a new way of travel as people tire of the bus and boat options and are looking for real adventure-style holidays,” says Compass Expeditions’ Mick McDonald, one of the company’s four directors, who spends his time between Australia and South America.

The idea for Compass Expeditions came in 2005, when Mick completed a motorcycle ride from London to Vladivostok to raise money for the Brisbane-based charity Friedreich’s Ataxia Network.

“The ride totally changed my life and from there I decided to create a motorcycle tour company.” Prior to setting up the company, Mick and his partners worked driving and guiding overland tours of South America, and were therefore extremely familiar with the region, its terrain and tourism offerings.

Compass Expeditions has seven motorcycles available for each tour, with most tours averaging 10 people including pillion passengers. Partners also have the option of riding in the support vehicle.

“We have a tour running every month somewhere in South America, and we’ve set them up so clients can string two or more riding tours together to do a longer motorcycle adventure.”

Mick says that safety is a key concern, and the company stipulates that participants must have a minimum of two years’ riding experience.

“We give people as much information as possible about the ride and conditions, and have a lot of interaction with the passengers before they get on the bike to start the tour. Most of our tours are on-road and any off-road parts of the tours are definitely not extreme because they are on packed dirt roads. We do a half-day bike familiarisation course on the first day of the tour, educate them about safety, and do some off-road riding”.

“It has all really come together and the word about our tours is getting around. Our tours are really good value for money. That doesn’t mean they’re cheap, but they’re affordable; we use the best bikes and provide fantastic service and support through every tour.”

Information about all the tours available can be found at Compass Expeditions (http://www.compassexpeditions.com ), where secure online bookings can also be made.

ha! they get under yr skin eh?

Yip strange seeing Mal on the Buell.

Buellbabe, - it's mainly the gearing she finds a drag on the X-1...2nd gear is revving it's nuts off (relatively speaking) and 3rd gear is too high, making it hunt.
It does have the ugly scoops taken off and a pod put on so maybe the fuelling isn't quite right.!

My X1 used to do that before i loaded the race maps on to it.
Will now happily pull away from below 2k revs.

Eric Buell is hard to kill. He is back on track with where it started: Racing: http://www.erikbuellracing.com/

His bikes are now not based on HD motors, but on a 72 degree twin (same as used in the late road bikes). This motor is now used in the racing bike named 1190RR. After some serious work the motor is now producing 185 horses at the backwheel at 11,500 revs.

I had three broken off inside. Had to drill and ezyout them. It had flogged the pulley as well so had to source a new one, machined the wheel as well. Bit of a major really all in all. The bolts are lock tighted in as well so any breakage and subsequant removal can be frought with a little danger.(broken ezyouts).:shit:

I've owned several buells and still have a '07 xb12r and recently sold my '06 xb12ss long.
I would call buell ownership an experience rather than a pleasure. They're fun-ish to ride though.
If you enjoy talking to random people that come up to you in the street where your bike is parked and try to start conversations with you, the buell is second best only to something like an old bsa or matchless or something.

The new rotax engined ones look like they're made of offal, the exhaust looks like a distended stomach and the rad scoops look like kidneys. Who designed the thing? A butcher? The welding looks like someone squeezed it out of a cat.

Really don't understand why you continue to own a Buell if this is the way you feel about them...oh well...

I currently own 3 Buells and have been a Buell owner rider for 10 years, infact last week was my 10 year anniversary of my lust affair with my beloved X1 Lightning and also was the 1 year anniversary of my latest love...the CR.

As far as the CR (affectionately called "The Black") is concerned, yea I am not that fussed on the radiator pods but it all pales into nothing when I ride it. AJ and I demo-ed the CR and had to buy it, it was that blimmin orgasmic to ride. We actually bought the demo cos we were the first customers to ride it and we wanted THAT bike LOL. I have demo-ed a lot of bikes over the years and the only other time I have ever demo-ed one and said "well bugger me I gotta own that" is with my X1.

Actually when I first looked at the X1 I thought it was pretty fugly but the sheer bliss of riding it changed that. And of course now its so customised that its a thing of utter beauty LOL.
BTW got some customising plans for the CR as well...why? cos its a keeper.

To me riding a Buell is just about the most fun you can have with your clothes still on.
I have tried other brands and the only one that comes close to the total "yee ha this is awesome fun" factor is the Triumph Speed Triple.

And just gotta post this link I got sent yesterday...hope its not already on here
http://roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=41967

The sheer determination and PASSION of Erik Buell inspires me, I have so much respect for the man. I have heard him speak in another interview where he says he is humbled by the huge support of Buell riders worldwide. His way of saying thanks is to give us a new street bike. GO ERIK!
I swore he would never give up and I was right!

BTW I am the proud owner of a cool EBR supporters T-shirt that has 2 words on it that sum things up nicely.

NEVER QUIT!

I am so proud to be a Buell rider. hell yea!

As for more torque and HP??? Yes well of course thats a big necessity cos it lacks so much hahahahahahahahaha

seriously tho, you can never have enuf ponies eh? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

But unfortunately the priority at the mo is to get something welded onto the sidestand so that I can reach it. Having to put it up and then swing my leg over, dodgy.

Stop it!!!!!!
You big tease LOL

Already had the can gutted, that sorted out the sound LOL.

Then next on the list is getting the seat carved so that I can touch the ground with more than a toe...

true...

have you checked out the wellington buell group lately...

i have updated it...

Really don't understand why you continue to own a Buell if this is the way you feel about them...oh well...

I don't know either.

having ridden a few, here's my feelings on buells (proper buells) stop reading and skip to the next post if you are an easily offended buell owner.

There's no doubt the buells are solidly built, but the vibration, especially from the long stroke 1200 version, is alarming, especially on the s range, the tubular steel handlebars seem to resonate at around 1900 rpm, i'm suprised they don't fail with fatigue.
You can't get away from the fact it is a 40 year old chopper motor wedged in a second rate sportbike chassis.
The flywheel mass is a pain, i find i'm on the brakes a lot trying to slow the engine down, when you shut the throttle it takes what seems like an age for the flywheels, which are the size of dustbin lids, to stop spinning; because of this there is no engine braking, in fact, the opposite.
They're suprisingly gutless too, for such a large motor, a carburated sv650 easily outpulls the big hog.
The fear of a belt braking and leaving me stranded and with a 4-500 dollar replacement bill, not allowing for recovery of the bike and associated hassle nags at the back of my mind and stops me raking it in the lower gears. i've seen this happen on a mates xb9 with less torque than the 12, If a chain breaks it's usually down to user error but the belt gives no warning and is supposed to need no maintenence. A lifetime belt warranty is no good to you when you're in the middle of the paraparas with no phone reception in the pissing rain on christmas day with a broken belt.
Anyone who owns one and raves about it is in denial, they're having a hard job convincing themselves, let alone sceptical bystanders that they've made the right choice.
There's no manual choke on the fuel injection models and they take ages to warm up in real cold weather. in the meantime you're sat at the lights revving the engine which is spluttering and farting and making you look like a right prat.
The injection system is all ford and GM car components, so i'm actually impressed it works as well as it does.
The cooling fan has more power than the engine, it's certainly louder than the engine!

having said all this i'm still looking for one of the old eric buell racing buells, the tubular frame ones. They're not as pretentious as the newer buells and are probably ok, maybe even fun.

I've got lots of contentious opinions about all sorts of things and they should all be taken with a pinch of salt.

lol pinch of salt... note taken...

i'm not offended at all... just gona add my 2 cents just like you did...

you must have riden a defective or crashed buell or something cause my 12SS is smooth... only time it vibrates is when its idling...

jap bikes come with weighted bar ends... wonder how much vibration they would have if you removed them...

i understand buell's aren't every ones cup of tea but you will never catch me on any of those jap crap bike either... mass produced heaps of plastic and metal with no character....

each Buell is different... and people who love them notice that... i have test ridden about 10 different buell's, models and years and not one of them felt the same... and thats one of the many things i like about them...

lack of power... hmmm how much power do you need???
its not like you can go faster than 100km... if you wana go faster get a race bike and stick to the track...

the best part of a buell is you dont have to ring the tits off it to get going... jap bikes dont go anywhere unless they are screaming their ring out...

rant over....

They were shit.
Even Eric himself said that.
This was why the XB series got major leaps forward such as fancy brakes and fancy ways to store fuel........Eric got sick of having to ride the 'norm' or race it for that matter.

I know its not the most technologically advanced, most powerful, most anything but I tell you what...it is the most enjoyable bike I have ridden in 30+ yeras of riding Japanese, Italian and American bikes so that's all I care about
