Well I vote for.....Milford road, Stair case, Etterick to Kelso, Catlins, and Cardrona/crown range in that order... So why were they not in your pole?
Oh....and that bit of road through an old Kauri forest heading north to Hokianga...

It's crap. Never ending, narrow, and full of trucks and 4WDs.

I used to prefer Paekakaiki because I didn't know the Takas and rarely went over that way. Now I like the Takas - I know it better now - also no driveways and less dickheads crossing the centre line.

I agree with Hans, Pautahanui bay is a brilliant little stretch, it would be epic if it was a bit longer.

Gets my vote, tight and twisty and the light oncoming keeps you on your toes.
There's also no tards undertaking you around blind corners.

what about Akatarawa Rd?
Tried that once on the R6. Found it tight, bumpy and dangerous. Very limited visibility and lots of concealed driveways. Might be fun on a pushbike though...

Where's Akatarawa Rd - don't think I've tried there.
I also like Makara but maybe because it is so quiet, and very close to me.
Not a fan of the takas - too much traffic.

Thats my street! Nah the road condition sucks. Its not bad in summer when it kills off all the moss and shit but you take your life into your own hands during winter.

I like my Paekakariki medium to well done with a little cracked pepper and sweet fruit chutney.

In summer the Paekakariki hill, it can be a little dodgy with all of the leaves, moss and crap in the winter and autumn. Is the intersection at Paekakariki end still a shocker?
In winter the 'tukas....

I also like Ohariu through to Makara then Karori. You have to be careful between Ohariu and Makara with gravel and other road debris. There can be the occasional 4wd taking up more than it's share plus cyclists who wander over the road panicking as they hear you approach. Road isn't as smooth as the Rimutaka road but makes it more interesting / keeps you on your toes (especially when you have crap suspension).

Paekakariki from the Northern side, Rimutakas has to much shit on the road and traffic.

Yeah, I think the "interesting" factor is why I like it so much.
Not just fast corners but a few little sharp (like u turns) bends to keep you awake. Oh and lets not forget the obligatory boulder on blind corners, MAF 4wd nutters and horses. Definately a good place to learn how to react to the unexpected (or the expected in this case).
Most unexpected thing that has happened to me is birdstrike by the bird off the electricity ads - the one that turns the lights off, don't know what they are called - that one was definately not expected.

Bwahahaha, I can't believe there's a discussion as to whether 24.6kays of road or 14 kays of road is the best.
Go for a real ride one day. Three hours on the ferry and you've got the worlds best motorcycling roads right there.

I was just down there Jimmy. I liked the strech from Balclutha to Alexandra.
Good condition and really predictable corners with a mix of tight and fast bends.
Shame i was in a car :crybaby::crybaby:
As for the Lindis Pass , bland , boring and just too patrolled for the reason you stated. Kaikoura is good but i got a nasty wave from a H/P car for doing 105kmh on a passing lane so i cooled down.

Paekak is too narrow...even the wide bits....no passing lanes,if you get caugght behind a unwilling car its hard to get past. Rimutakas is very very fast in a couple of places...If there is no traffic.
I like em both, bike and car...

I'd have to say SH58 and Greys Rd around the inlet, solely because thats the only one ive ridden! lol, have to take the SH58 side of it everyday if i want to go anywhere, and Greys Rd was the 1st spot i came off my bike, albeit right at the end at the crazy corskrew-type corner! Was only going about 35 too

To me, it's like comparing an apple with an orange. If you want what I've seen described as one of the best roads of it's type in overseas bike mags, then head over the takas. If you want somthing a little edgier, but shorter, do the Paekak Hill. Both is also a great option lol
The best time to do the hill is at about 3 to 4:30 am on a full moonlit weeknight, take it from me, it will be worth your effort...Light enough to read the small print stickers on your bike, yet you can still see headlights a mile off, in the unlikely event that you will see any cars that is.
Watch for those pre mentioned driveways on paekak though eh.
My best memory from my many rides through there was on a RG250 on a wet road, it was deliciously insane
Around the Pautahanui bay. Better surface, better cambers, better lines of sight.
That road is like premature ejaculation, it's all over way to fast to reach peak enjoyment!
what about Akatarawa Rd?
Ahhhh, Yes, My all time favourite, I've done it over 200 times
Where's Akatarawa Rd - don't think I've tried there.
I also like Makara but maybe because it is so quiet, and very close to me.
Not a fan of the takas - too much traffic.
The Akas, run between Upper Hut and Waikanae. Think the tightness of the windiest part of Ohariu valley for about 16 km,s. then it opens up to Makara like proportions for another 16 odd km's.
I used to live at the bottom of Makara and remember trimming many bushes along that road in my time hehehe
Beg to differ.
Lindis Pass. Ridden (very irresponsibly) like a race track, not another vehicle in sight, absofuckenlutely magic.
I unloaded a superbike out the van for that sexy number, ohhhhhh yeahhhhh

Like the following loop.....
Takas, Aka's, Piekak, Moonshine. Great up size combo right there! :woohoo:

Well after all the talk and such good weather I decided to go for a quick blast after work from Jville to makara. Great road - only had to overtake four cars on way out and about the same on the way back - not bad for rush hour.
Couple of bits of gravel on the road in the usual places. Once again a great bit of road for a quick blast. It's just the kind of road that the street triple is made for. Quick acceleration out of and and hard braking into most of the bends - not a flowing road at all.

In Wellington area proper, Akatarawa road, just over the hill and slightly south of Martinborough is Haurangi road which is very cool.
Take Dry River Road/Blue Rock Road from just south of Martinborough and at the T junction at the end of that turn right.

just make like you're headed for the takas, take the second left past rimutex (church on the corner I think) and follow that road till you hit kapiti :niceone:
EDIT: search youtube if you want to know what the road's like, targa ralley used to use it, dont know if they still do
during summer its my favorite way home when the wncr heads out to gordys, awsome road in the dark when you can see cars coming from miles away

Rimutakas (only on a windless day) imo. As its more open and safer vision wise, also less arseholes on the wrong side of the road -intentionally or otherwise. Paekak has its charms though.
Also rated... Lindus pass, (well any of the alps passes actually) Mt. Michael up the hill from fairlie, see also: the entire West Coast SI. And that neverending twistie before you come into Kaitia. whats that called? It was the business.

It doesn't matter which is better anyhow - today I am heading over the Rimutakas to meet people (incl. Nasty) at Rimutex then over the Paekak hill to spread his ashes up there. I guess then that Paekak Hill will have more special meaning for me after this :)

Only been over that road once and never again but may be if/when adventure bike comes along. Too many corners are too tight and slow and no where to go if a cage comes at you. There are many better and safer roads.

Living on the coast gotta do the first one to get to the second. The first just to sharpen up your reaction time......fallen rubbish on the road, cyclist riding two abreast on blind corners, boy racers half way on your side, dead and alive possums ,cars coming out of driveways horses and other livestock.

I actually prefer going up it! (coming from the Pauatahanui side that is). Have it down to a fine art now. Only thing you gotta watch is even in the summer some of those sheltered corners never fully dry out. Couple that with moss and crap on the roads and it spells disaster....
To sum it up...Paekak Hills my weekday blast. Tukas my weekend getaway.
