View Full Version : Who is doing the Cemetary?

Last year I watched the race, utterly spell-bound at the level of risk. Mind you, I suspect Hampton Downs looks to be on a par, except they don't have lamp-posts and man-holes waiting to greet the incautious.
But I'm booked and paid. I just have to do it.
But that's the 'thing' about bike racing. It's the risk factor. Like last weekend at Taupo; track five, the short track with the wiggle back on to the main straight. Get that wrong and poom! All there is is solid concrete to meet and greet you. Coming through that turn, pegs being reduced to dust, I'm thinking 'Fuck the wall. This is living!' I didn't give a shit if I was first, last or otherwise. Just being there and doing it. Yum!
Even during the rest of the turns there remains the potential ignominy of ending up in the kitty-litter. Various did, on the day. Turn four saw two pissed-off visitors. Turn ten saw one we thought might have been hurt, but wasn't.
But mostly, on the various tracks around the country, a low-side gets you little more than a partially munted bike (unless of course you're riding a mighty '95 Yammi which seems to put up with anything, in which case you simply pick her up and carry on) and a bit of annoyance.
But the Cemetery? There's lamp-posts and kerbs, and manhole covers, and oil-slicks, and small concrete islands, all of which have waited 12 long months to claim the blood of the unlucky. And there's all those headstones, quietly inviting the courageous to join the infinite.
You can't see into the corners; mostly.
It's a bit easier for the blooded. They've all been there and done that so many times. They 'know' the course. Not me. I've seen it but that's about all. So I get he newbie thrill. You only ever get that once.
First fuck. First parachute, first track-ride, first track-race...first Cemetery.
Yum, but I'm looking forward to this event.
I hope ACC doesn't suddenly demand I pay more to be a part of it.
And anyway, you get to be on TV. I wonder if some smart-arse commentator will shed the words, as I lope around at my best....And believe me I will be giving it my best as he says, 'And here comes Beaglebarm.' albeit from the safety of his little TV enclosure.
Who else, other than the normally exalted, are doing the Cemetery? By that I mean: any other newbie Cemetery boys or girls here?

Cemetery Circuit is a shit load safer than Pukekohe, especially with the addition of a couple of air fences.
Blind corners? No issue.
So long as it's dry, you needn't stress.
Wanganui any day over Paeroa in my opinion...although the mental front straight at Paeroa makes it a must-do at least once.

Nah, I'm with Tony on this one.
I had drama's a plenty at both of 'em:
Wanga's: missed noob sighting laps thanks to a fuel dry break connector O-ring letting go, and blew fork seals.
Paeroa: missed noob sighting laps thanks to rushed officials after threat of rain (sitting on dummy grid they just closed the gate on a few of us) and was physically munted after crashing my road bike 2 days beforehand.
So it kinda evens out, but Paeroa was a more exhilarating track. On a big bike Wanga's is like sword fighting in an elevator.

theyve put new fences up around the cemetary.... crappy, thin "metal" ones that will do SFA to stop a flying bike and rider, but will do damage to any rider who happens to connect with it. theres been no attempt at putting up the standard fences elsewhere yet, which i think should have been started by now.

PAeroa is a race track on the road. Wanganui is a fucken kart track by comparison.
In saying that, Wangas does have its appeal, I just think Paeroa is an all round better venue.

but in saying that i did love going over the railway tracks and through the cemetery...... the crowd also did it for me at wangas..... my first crash in T1 i could hear the cheer as i was tumbling... it was louder when i got up and even louder wen i got the bike going again :D my 2nd crash in T1 the crowd was louder than my first and they cheered more when i got going and i could hear them egging me on each lap i went past :) that was cool :) i'll never forget my first cemetery circuit or hacksaw :)

I'm entered in F3 - first time on a street curcuit and looking forward to it.
Couple of questions for those who have done it before:
I was planning on using spent tyres as I heard that you can't use them again after riding at Wangas. Anyone else experience this?
Also, is a steering damper really necessary? I haven't needed one at Taupo or Manfeild but it has been pointed out to me that I should get one for the street.
Anyone got a spare one...

Use the best tyres you've got - The last time I tried to economize on tyres I landed on my head !
I did the Tri-series last year on the Hornet and I didn't think Wanganui was harder on tyres than anywhere else (but I was only lapping in the 57-58-59 second bracket) I used the same tyres for the whole series (plus Greymouth)
Some of the faster folk might have a different story :)

Yea good point, I'd much rather have lots of grip. I was meaning that the tyres pick up the shit on the street curcuit and don't feel the same again. I have no expectations for the steet race but I want lots of grip for the TRRS.

I didn't find that it stuffed tyres in any special way...maybe top boys have an issue but at my pace, it was fine.
On my old CBR I had never felt that I needed a damper until I rode at Wanga's. It was ok at the start of the day, but once I started getting to 54s flat I found myself backing off in places 'cos the shakes were getting pretty violent with haybales fast approaching at the end of a straight!
Certainly doable without one, but having to back off sucks!

Hi Dan
Only use new or near new tyres mate, (theres little enough grip as there is). Steering damper is nice to have - but is dependant on your riding style, if your prone to yanking on the bars & hangin on too tight - then yes you'll be wanting one.
It is possible to ride without one though, just not ideal. It aint the isle of man........but still has a couple of gnarley areas.

Dear Santa,
I've been a good boy this year, so for Christmas I'd like to ride my motorbicycle really fast around W(h)anganui and not crash or come last.
Love
Scracha
ps. and I'd like the balls to do proper clutch wheelies in front of a big crowd like when I was 17.
