View Full Version : Possible Xmas 4-5 day tour
junkmanjoe
8th November 2009, 21:04
im looking to doing a mini tour around central north island..
sort of a getting to know ride for me and new bike,
riding east coast to west coast, was just wondering if any one else is thinking along these lines,,
im looking around 4-5 days,
at a rough map idea.
starting Masterton, to Taihape,
over gental annie to napier,
Napier to Gisborne hugging the coast,
around the east cape, satying close to the coast, go around the Coromandle loop, cut across to west coast and head for new Plymouth, not sure which roads to take that way, like to stay close to the coast...
im going to go around coast side of Mt Egmont, through Opunake,
and just make my way home from Wanganui...
just wondering if any one else is thinking along same lines, or advice on scenic roads to take on our way..
any ones welcome to join in for tour or day or two..
i need to find out what days im getting off this year, before posting dates..
this most probably be a tent tour....
so any good safe camp spots, in your local area.
just a laxed out tour of ole NZ
any advice welcome..

I am planning to be heading south (from Auck) around the 4/5th of Jan and doing pretty much the west coast down (Raglan, Awakino etc) and then around Mt Egmont with a Whangamomona in between and then onwards to wellywood, planning as backwoods as possible with about 3 days to get to welly.
Depending on the timing could meet you somewhere.

Don't know if I can make it but on the road between Wairoa and Gisborne I recommend you take the inland route via Tiniroto.
From Wairoa, head for Frasertown and just before you get there turn right onto the road for Tiniroto.
Rode this route in early October with the wife as pillon and enjoyed it very much.

until ive mapped the route out, distances, times, gas stations, camp grounds,
places to stay, i can then decide if its doable with in time frame, with out pushing it to hard...
i know i can ride a good 500 kms a day with out to much trouble...

The Rainbow opens 28th December till 1 April, there is a toll gate half way through, i cant rember whether it was $20 each or $10 each but we only had $20 between the three of us and looked poor so they let us off,

They let Jatz thru both ways for the $15 fare. I think it is only for 24hrs though so you could leave & return from either end if you so desire. This was at the gatekeepers discretion tho.
BTW if you decide to stop for a while at the gate take some insect deterrent.

Haha! Could be a long trip round the East Cape on a lawn mower LOL! The Tui's wold help tho! :msn-wink:
Still can't believe I've gotta sell the DR for under $7k for an '09 to shift it; the used bike market is totally shite at the moment!
Funny but I had just decided to say screw it and keep it, put some more road orientated adv tyres on and change the seat & tank to tourify it too! At least in the $6500 price range I have options for a not too old twin, like a 2001/2 Transalp - bit "vanilla" but would do the job I want (commuting & adv touring)! Ev0lution's Africa Twin would be nice to own but he's asking way too much for it, especially since according to him on the @ thread on here, the Haynes manual says it really may be a '94, not a '96 as it says on TM - will be interesting to see what it goes for if he does put it up for auction instead! More like $6500 max I would guess, that's the area the last couple on TM have sold for! ;)

We wants it... my precious..:niceone:..BUT...Mandy is limiting bikes in the garage.
Fairly sure that this is the same bike that sold 15 mths ago for $5.5k. I bid but missed. Cosmetically looks a dog - 12 mths ago was much tidier. See some rust, missing left crash bar, the previous owner painted the barrels (now peeling), and the oil leaks seem to be much as they were 12 mths ago. Seats ripped in at least 2 places. Hopefully the foam is okay. Mostly cosmetic, easy fix...Hagon rear shock, panniers. My assessment - potentially good buying there.

Correct. Barry managed to buy the BMW R100GS that was advertised a few week ago for $2.9k. That needs a bit of work though. Don't think Claire will let him have multiple bikes...

Hmmmm. I'd like a scrambler as a second bike. Nice and low for short buggers like me. It would be a refreshing change to be able to touch the ground. :niceone:
