how do i search effectively? Use keywords, or if you know in which forum it will be in (engine, electrics etc) then search in there as it will reduce the amount of results
how do i direct questions to members? You can send them PM's (Private Message), which is done by clicking on a members name in a thread or on their profile, under Contact info
how do i make pix small enough for signature, avatar etc? I use MS Paint and the Image->Stretch/Skew function. There probably are better programs but it's free and works
difference between thread and post? You have started this thread, Every 'reply', such as mine, is a post
how long is a piece of string? It depends
cheers hey.

Welcome to the site mate, you'll enjoy it

What he said, except I don't think you can send PMs to members until you have a few posts to your credit.
It's all under "Quick Links" at the top - select "FAQ" from the drop-down list.

Welcome damorf,

You've done well to have already worked out how to create a new thread (took me ages).

Get some posts unde you belt then you can start asking direct questions. I am sure you can already post on members profile pages, which is almost what you want to do.

How long have you been riding?

A thread is what you have started and a post is what have said as in post one.
To quote (or direct a question) to a member, click the 'quote' box at the bottom right of that members post and type away.
Trial and error, thats how I began (truth be known, thats what im still doing)

thanks guys.

i'm blown away with responses already, so cheers.

i'm 35, (happily) married w/ 2 young girls.

first got bike licence in '97, car about 5 years before that.

first bike 96? zzr250 (purple) for 6 months.

96? yzf600 thundercat (silver/yellow) about a year.

rf900 since, and w/ last 4 years out of rego and no riding.

looking to hot/freshen up the rf as i will need to ride it to work in about 6 mths when i move to cairns.

would prefer to stick with the rf as it rocks, i like the fact that they are quite rare and different, and it will be my cheapest option.

i have been doing plenty of surfing lately, and have got some ('94 i think) gixxer 750 cams lined up.

i am a little confused with compatability of gixxer bits (1100 bottom end, fork swaps etc), and need to get this right as used parts are few and far between.

i haven't done any previous mech work on my bike, but now is as good a time as ever (ie far less disposable income).

i have never done any track time, and just like to pull wheelies and zip down the road (no tracks up here any way).

all comments welcome, and i am happy to share anything i have learned over the years.

I can help you out a bit if you need info.

What do you need info on?

See this thread (http://forum.oldskoolsuzuki.info/cgi-bin/Yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1233514410) for info on 1100WP with 900 head conversion.

I've heard so much about the cam swap from the 750 - some say 92 is better, but will nee grinding at ends, but 93-95 is a drop-in.

thanks riffer.

wow, this forum thing really works.

i had heard the opposite about gixxer cams.

92 is drop in, later need 1/4 or 1/8 ground off ends?

anyhoo, as you would well know, it depends more on what is available.

gixxer 1100 donks are not cheap though, hey?

also the wife just figured out how to put the bike pic as avatar.

Hey hey,

Welcome to the site. Great choice of bike (not that I'm biased, or anything).

Have a look at www.rfownersclub.co.uk as well.

There's an awful lot you can do to an RF to hot it up.

Of course. Thundermahacat......

Possibly, I sold it shortly after that pic was taken and bought me a Triumph, was thinking of a name change to Tri-Guy.... But shortened my original name to Maha...:scooter:

Lucky you didn't get a Bimota - "Bi-Guy" might have given people ideas......

just joined old skool suzuki, and rf owners club forums too.

yet to surf hard through there but.

as advised by riffer, i looked at an article on an rf1074.

for anyone else's info, the crank (478627-001 477919-001) on the gsxr1100wp is the same part number all the way through to the ww in 98 (all the water cooled models).

checked this on bike bandit.

conrods (part 478627-001) are obviously the same too, for the 1074cc capacity.

what i am not sure of yet, is what capacity you would get if you just used the crank and rods with rf barrels and pistons as opposed to the lot from the gixxer.

is this possible? i am not sure yet on crank end bearing sizes for example.

which method is easier?

cheaper is what is probably going to happen....

Easier is to copy what others have already (successfully) done.

I reckon it would be about 1000cc.

good guess riffer.

found a quote somewhere which states 1005cc when using 1100 crank and rods w/ 900 barrels & pistons.

my problem seems to be tracking down 1100 bits full stop, at the moment.

Not surprised. The 1100s are getting on now, and they've been thrashed usually.

GP Motorcycle wreckers in Tauranga have a couple of 1100 motors they've advertised on trademe.co.nz recently (last three months) - it might be worth trying them or maybe Victoria Motorcycle Wreckers. Expect to pay $1100 for an average motor though, and you'll probably need to spent some $$$ on it.

At the end of the day though you will probably start asking yourself if you really want to spend half the price of a new gixxer on getting an RF to perform at 90% of what it will do when they're 75% of the way there right now...

well gents,

global financial crisis my arse!

i got one quote for 2500 for entire 1100 donk, and 2800 for another.

phuck that.

also quoted 2 grand for hayabusa front end.

it will be an effort to sort the wheat from the chaff......

i did manage to get some 94 750 cams on the way for 195 bucks posted.

i might email some kiwi wreckers though - can't do any worse than that.

cheapest running rf over here is 3500 plus, same for 750.

1100 maybe 4500 plus.

thanks for your help hey.
