Can we figure out how many charities and such motorcyclsist collectively support . And a guess at the money involved

I know some (only) of the Auckland ones

Westpac Helicopter annually, about $15000
Easter egg run - Salvation Army , annually . maybe $2000 ?
Toy Run , Salvation Army , annually, maybe $10000
Blood Runs, to give blood, several per year. priceless.

I know there are others in Auckland, and lots more outside Auckalnd

(plus of course all the one offs)

Can we add to this list.

SMC does a blood run every three months. Although probably not large enough numbers for what you're looking for.

Sorry to Hijack the thread Ixion

But Idea just sprang to mind!

Make the next set of Local protest rides a "BLOOD RUN"

Organize the blood bank to meet us at our destinations Ie the Museum!
and we all give them a pint!! Maybe 500ml if we can't ride for a time after? whatever is safe!
I'm sure they would like 3000 litres (nationally) or more of our blood!!

Think of the slogan ideas that could come forward!!

File this for future mate!! If its a goer!!

Sorry guys back to the thread! MY bad!!

ive done maybe 7 or so. only done one toy run... refused to do anymore due to supposedly experienced older riders making mistakes.
done westpac heli in auckers once, and supported a few charity runs that were fundraising for various things. like, one was raising money to support a heart transplant patient, another put the proceeds towards recliner chairs for the hospital child unit for parents to sleep in. stopped doing them as well due to the fact that the ride was always to a pub, and i felt unsafe riding back surrounded by people who had been drinking.

I think the examples below are outside your request but they're submitted in case they are of use.

A couple of charitable events I can think of involved raising $5000 for the widow who'se husband suddenly died. Likwise more recently the guy that died in a bike accident.

Also training of riders mentoring them to stay alive saving lives AND money for the state.

The Sundowner Ralley at Greta Valley each year around easter time donates all its proceeds to The Chomendey home for children.
It is run by the Plains Motor Cycle Club.
Im sure there is a link on their web site for the run.
Or better still members of the club who are KB'ers could confirm this.
They also take a gold coin collection for the Westpack hellichopper, I think.

Hey, another idea, not to hijack the thread either, but.
Anyone contacted the City Mission?
Xmas is coming and I know they are well down on donations...could be a real vote winner and Diane (CEO City Mission) knows a lot of well placed, powerful people.
I would do it myself but would have no authority like the big man Les!
Failing that Lifewise (used to be the Methadist City Mission), same deal.
High profile Auckland charities who understand the concept of marginalization.
Wotchfink?

i havent been there, but fully appreciated the need for them.
the transplant patient that we raised money for... that turned into a real shit storm. basically, the people who had set it up for her refused the donations, so the money was taken back by the triumph club and ridden up to auckland and handed to the family. the organisation then turned around and accused the whole group of taking the money and spending it on their bikes. total bullshit. they have done heaps of other rides, but i cant remember what the money was used for.

exactly. thankfully, while it upset many of the riders who had freely given their time and money, it didnt deter them from other rides. they do one each year, and the transplant ride was the second. i just remembered they did one for brain injury as well.

Maybe the next one you raise money for a biker injuiry and make sure ACC see this and that it is added in to their calculations on how much many wasn't needed to spent because of bikers caring for their own???

Keep them coming folks.

I intend to compile them and send the list out to the press after the 17th. With a hint that if the government succeed in taxing us off the road, it's going to be a pity for those we assist as wella s us

I like the idea of the City Mission- I'll contact them next week

Give me some more ideas for causes people would be willing to support as bikers

I reckon that after the 17th we're going to have some bikers doing stuff that pisses the public off a bit.

So to counterbalance that and retain our status as Good Bastards we need to step up our eleemosynary activities.

I use to do the odd food bank run when I lived in Napier back in the 90's. Donation wasn't money but food for the food bank etc. Do they still do those...

Over the years I have done heaps of charity runs other than the standard, from womens refuge, toy, starship, cancer, blood, food, st johns, rescue helicopter, child cancer, spca, to many of other charitys and research.

AMROC in HB charity run use to be something different every year...

yeah, there's hundreds. But how many would attract a good turn out? (Isn't PETA the nutjobs who want fish reclassifed as sea-kittens?).

I think also that bikers are more forthcoming when the donation is an item (easter egg, toy etc) rather than just stump up some cash ? (I welcome comment on that thought)

yeh, thats them. i was just throwing animal groups out there. plus, peta have done a lot of good in the past.

the charity rides ive done have all been cash donation [$10/bike minimum] and then they have an auction at the end, with goods donated by local businesses.
i think the triumph club ones usually end up with about $5000 or so, as the auctions get really firey sometimes and they end up with a bidding war. i like the auctions cos you feel like youve got a real good deal, even if you end up paying heaps for something. only downside is for those from out of town and getting large items home again. i know one couple ended up having to bid fiercely on a sportsbag to put their winnings in. LOL.

I think it a very important point that Bikers support many charities, and do much for our community.

This year BADD charity is supporting a food run 27th december (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=105340), donated directly to the Salvation Army at Taupo Motorsport Race track at the BADD 3 Hour Endurance Race as the feature race of the Taupo Road Race spectacular (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=100796), final round of the SUZUKI NZ International Tri-Series.

We have three meet points at the moment, Tauranga, Napier and New Plymouth all leaving 9am.

If you cannot participate in the group rides, no problem, just bring your food, and same deal.

Bring a can (preferably two of course) of non perishable goods - our girls will put them straight into the Sallies trailer, and in return

You get:

FREE entry to the BADD 3 Hour Endurance Race
FREE secure parking onsite
FREE camping at the old circuit 26/27th December.

I have a meeting with Hauraki FM this week, and am preparing press releases for mid december.
