View Full Version : Just lost my virginity!!!

justsomeguy

:msn-wink: I'm not a virgin anymore, yipeeee!!!!!!!!

Just did SH22 in the morning with the rest of the crew who did Death's ride down 22. Was riding back home in the pouring rain, just before the Tuakau bridge. Slowing down to take the turn and lost the front. On reflection I feel it must have been a spot of diesel on the road. Cos one moment I was fine the next I just lost it. And all the time I was in full control, never even expected it to happen. My mistake I know better than to approach intersections in the middle of the lane where the bl00dy trucks drop off their deposits, anyway now I'll remember:whistle:

The front slid out under me and I just went into a fast roll lying straight on the ground, got my hands in front of me like in a boxers stance guarding against a straight punch to the face and kept rolling till I stopped. Bit surprised seeing how far I rolled probably atleast a good 10 meters. Now that I was rolling and in sort of a stable (versus an uncontrolled) roll, I was just anxious to come to a stop so I could get off the middle of the road........ as I really didn't want to get run over.

Luckily it was at a slow speed only around 50-60. I slid straight down the road and the bike to the left gutter. Luckily there was heaps (big mounds) of gravel and that sort of slowed the bike as it went into the gutter.

Helmet is all scratched really badly and the front chin piece broke off. The right hand side fairings are all cracked and the foot-brake lever and foot rest assembly broke off...... all easily repairable and everything should be fixable for under $500 so no point even bothering with insurance......

Since this is new zealand the first passing car stopped and the blokes there gave me a hand and did what New Zealanders do - sorted me out and assisted in every way they could.

Then Death showed up followed by Draco...... as they had stopped to swap bikes. A few mins later and Zed, 6Chris6 and Wonko showed up, thanks for turning back to check up on me guys!!! You KB'ers are AWWWWWWWESOME!!!!

Went over to Deaths to look at the beasts in his garage and for a very tasty cuppa (thanks Draco) and ended up watching some nice stunt clips.

The bikes fine and I'm sort of fine starting to get a headache and neck ache in the right hand side... rode it back home and now have another adventure to add to my life.

Not bad for my first bin aye??!!

Hehehehe :2thumbsup

Hi JSG, Glad to hear you are ok after the spill, I am suprised you were in front of Death given usually he is always ahead on most of the rides I have done with him.
Will you be on the ride on Monday now as if you need a helmet to borrow I have a spare dependant on the size you need.

I'm ok..... just been examining my helmet. Looks like I went face first into the road...... hence the sort of damage....... which brings me to an important question.

In a crash (since they have to pass the same tests) is a 100 dollar helmet just as strong as a 1000 dollar helmet??

What are the major differences between them apart from comfort???

And do you'll know of any good deals on at the moment?? I'm a size M I think....

Well, you wouldn't think so. Just because they pass the same tests doesn't mean that they're equal.

It's like comparing an RS250 with a GN250, they both meet the 250 criteria...

Yeah that was a real bummer JSG, you were doing so well too! After you told me earlier on that you had only been riding for THREE MONTHS I watched you and was impressed with your performance, especially in those conditions...not only was the road damp at times but remember those wild winds!! :cold:

Anyway, you walked away from your first ever bin with a commendable attitude and even managed to ride the :sleep:R home without a RH rearset to rest your foot on - those pillion pegs are good for something after all! Hope you get all the broken bits repaired/replaced without too much hassle. Oh, and you look like you need a new jacket as well as helmet, or will you patch up the holes?

justsomeguy
23rd April 2005, 22:21
YeahAfter you told me earlier on that you had only been riding for THREE MONTHS I

I bought the bike late last year and probably only rode the bike about 5 times until I got my license on the 20th of Jan after which I've ridden most weekends and some evenings.....I've learnt heaps from people like Aff-man and Zapf and Frosty and Erik and a few others.

I would be useless if not for KB........

To be legal on the road, helmets have to pass a minimum standard. The snell foundation have set an voluntary independent standard, which is higher than the DOT standards for helmets.

So yes, a more expensive helmet will be of higher quality than a cheaper helmet, in respect it's crash protection.

However, from a crash protection perspective I think most people would agree that as you spend more on a helmet, the returns do diminish. More of the $ goes towards fancy graphics, ventilation, and sound reduction.

If you don't wear earplugs, or even if you do, a quiet helmet can be a good long term investment for your hearing.

I think the HJC CL-14 is probably one of the cheaper/cheapest helmets that have Snell2000 certification.

Seeing as you've taken a knock on the head, it might pay to visit a doctor to get checked out and/or familiarise yourself with the symptoms of concussion - it's always reasuring to know why you can't string a sentence together after a crash..

justsomeguy
23rd April 2005, 23:08
Thanks for the info and your concern Rhys yes my helmet is/was a HJC.......

No I don't think I have a concussion. Did some research on the symptoms....lots of sleep planned for the long weekend in any case, and lots of quality eating too.

I feel my chin hit the ground the hardest. I will be shopping around and will get a quality lid, don't you worry. Am expecting a set of leathers from wildcat_lgf soon anyways...... I'm only going to patch up the current set of cordura I have.

Can anyone here(who knows what to look for) have a look at them and tell me how badly affected they are??

Just a thought: Shouldn't you change your signature from "mustgofaster" to "wenttoofast"? :moon:

Have you heard of Motorcycle Safety Wear (MSW)? They're in St Kevin's Arcade, on K Rd. Take your gear into there and see what they have to say. If you've torn the cordura, or abraded the seams, I expect they'd be able to patch it.

Bear in mind that if you've worn through the cordura, you've probably shagged the waterproof liner, as it's pretty delicate in comparison to the cordura.

Make sure its SNELL M2000 Certified mate... if its not look for another brand.

As the DOT standard is just a standard based on the design, no batch testing involved.... But I believe that Batch testing is involved with Snell... correct me if I am wrong.

Another reason to trust the SNELL standard is that all motorsports helmets use the SNELL standard, not DOT .... SNELL.

were you on a lean when the front slid? if so you may have avoided it by hanging off the bike more, as you'll have to lean the bike less. Its a whole different style of riding when its really wet like that....

So when are you up for a wet ride? I need to pratice wet weather riding on my 750.... :niceone:

Who told you that???? It is one of the most difficult colours to notice. Orange is the easiest colour followed by yellow and flourescent green, etc.

Silver is one of the harder colours to see, was watching a program on crashes, they reckon that's why James Dean was killed cos the truck driver didn't see his car.......

Went shopping today. Yes John I'm gonna need your hand with a bit of plastic welding sometime. :niceone:

And yes I'm gonna get a shiny black lid. Always wanted one so I'm gonna get one. Saw a nice HJC CL-14 on special at Motomail for $199.

Will shop around to see if I can get a better deal/helmet someplace else otherwise I'll buy it.

I also need the foot brake assembly thingy. That's all.

Went for a ride down towards Piha today in the rain again to see how things are. Bike seems OK. But front end seems a bit weird - unstable.

Will have a leisurely look over it. Doesn't look too bad.

Zapf took some pics of it. Will get them off him and see how it goes.

Better check your clamps and head bearing, and forks - crappy front ends arent a good thing, its probably just twisted forks, so if you loosen the clamps and do them up again then it should be ok.

Also check your brake disk.. make sure it isnt warped to bad or at all..

Good luck :)

I would come and do it for you but my bike still needs it brake disks - I'm sure someone else will lend their knowledge and skills.

You'll find that the weird feeling is more a rider/psychological effect after a crash, rather than a specific fault with the bike.

Worth making sure that everything is still straight though.

Although I just ride the ZXR like a NANA.. I'd hate it to suffer the effects of a crash.

But resting your foot on the Pillion rest might explain alot, but still check it all out dont want you to suffer the same fate as I.

I'm not happy i fell off, I'm happy I rode away with another story to tell, rather than lying in the ICU.

The bills won't be too much. All I need is a little foot bracket. The rest is just cosmetic. Bout $100 (prob $50) max in plastic welding and another 300-400 for a full respray. Says the guy who falls of on most rides:bs: .........Name a ride we've been on where I've chucked it down the road..

At the risk of being serious for a moment and destroying my hard cultivated image as a carefree crash prone teenager, I think what Lee Rusty said does have currency.

Rather than looking at it as a "oh well, there was diesel / gravel / a gumboot on the road, it was an external factor, can't be helped." We need to consider what role our observation and riding skills play in keeping us safe.

Mentally it sure feels better being able to put the blame on someone else, but blame doesn't fix fairings or broken bones.

Hmmmmmmmmm........:wait:

There was this one time at band camp...... oh well :whocares:

Sure riding skills definitely play a big point as do observation skills, but sometimes you need to look for things you don't know to look for that's where experience and knowledge come into play. Both of which I'm trying hard to gain. The last thing any of us want to do is crash and deal with the consequences, especially on our finances.

It is very important consider what role our observation and riding skills play in keeping us safe.

What is equally important is to treat it as a learning experience and not as a great chance to cry over spilt milk.

After my fall and seeing zapf do the same a few feet infront of me I have learned a ton of info.

Really?? Ranzer what were the details???
The ones I know of...

He said he was coming up to a roundabout in the wet and braked a bit too hard and the front let go.

The other one was in the dry, coming back along Old North road. He was behind me and we were coming up to the one-way bridge. I slowed down a bit too much because I wasn't sure if we had right of way or not  , and he had to brake hard-ish and it basically let go and fell over.

Both were at low speed with not much damage done, just the cracks in the fairings probably grew a bit bigger... ;)

I've noticed the front brakes on zzr's are pretty good, better than the ones on the Zeal anyway. I wonder if maybe the fairly high amount of rake on the forks might make the front wheel more prone to skidding?
I dunno :spudwhat: maybe it's just the combination of good front brakes and narrow front tyres? Or just two unlucky zzr riders?

I've gotta say I was surprised that time when you stopped quick on your drive and the front wheel skidded a bit. Sure the tyres were cold, but it was in the dry and the drive didn't look slippery or anything.

Your bike says: Blackbird down??? What happened???

No time for me to soil my underpants. By the time I gathered what was happening. I was standing up looking at my bike deep in a gutter instead of under me:D

The reason they skidded was cos I applied the brakes rather roughly, not smoothly but just jammed them. On Saturday I was being much more smoother....... but it fell all the same......

i managed to lock my front brack down a damp hill, luckily i kept my bike standing up. gave me a good fright thought. but then in saying that ive had to aggresivly slam on the breaks and it didnt lock the front, so i guesss their not too bad...

Hey dude...i must say i like your attitude! I am a terminal optimist too - why worry about wee things like a slightly banged up bike when there are far better things to be doing, and far worse things that could have happenned? :niceone:

Re your repairs - Chuck at Anything Plastic in East Tamaki did an awesome job for me when i ducked up my Kwaka.... I had a group of similar priced quotes but he inspired the confidence to let him tackle the repairs, and well..... pics are in this thread, decide for yourself :-) http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=9382&highlight=duck

Actually that was what was on my mind too as I was rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling and rolling (fucking enough already:mad: ) I just wanted to stop get up and get the hell off the road......

Luckily for me thank God I could. I didn't stop to even check if anything was broken, just got up and hooffed it........

They also compiled a list of car accidents, and silver cars have a lower ratio of accidents proportionally. As there are more silver cars on the road...

they are also much harder to see as they blend in with the road kinda easily... bright colour is always a better choice if you want others to see you comming, oh and headlights do a bit!

Good to see you handling the *edit* slide so well, im still waiting for my time and i hope it never comes!

I didn't really crash, just slipped and fell got up, and rode away........

Now if I had highsided, broken some bones, ended up in hospital  I might have had a different attitude......will happen sometime the way I'm going......

Well the good news, according to Pastor Brian Tamaki, is that once you have been properly "rehabilitated" you can enjoy your "second virginity". Praise the lord...
